The character models in Xenoblade weren't very good either, relative to the rest of the game. You spend most of the time looking at their backs, so I'm not too worried. I mean, I wish everything was super detailed, but if they have to focus on one thing, I'd rather it be the environments and enemies you fight first, character models second.

Yeah, fuck asking questions of people that have played the earlier game. Why would anyone do that?

If I'm going to ask questions about a new entry into a game series, I'd do my research on the inspiration/previous entries in the series first before asking "convince me to play this game."

I don't hop into the MGSV thread and ask "looks generic. Are all MGS games like this?" If I did, I'd probably get the same responses that are in this thread.

The footage looks great. However, the monsters need to appear to actually take damage. The video made it looks like numbers were flying across the screen, but that monsters didn't even acknowledge they were being hit.

Yup 1,000 bullets in my spleen. I'm ok though, didn't hurt one bit!

I'm on a huge rpg kick right now, meaning this game has got me more amped than a fat kid on Thanksgiving. Xenoblade was one of my favorite games of last gen so naturally I'd be stoked.

That said I don't think this was the best footage for the masses who are more accustomed to action games

It looks quite nice graphically, but it reminds me too much of white night chronicles in it's approach (ie. An MMO type world but played solo) i'm not sold yet.

I liked WKC, but it had the same problem that bugged me with this footage: Regular enemies taking WAY TOO LONG to die.

The character faces in the upper left look like crummy "make your own avatar" faces typical of the MMO genre. I'm thinking this is going to play more like Phantasy Star Online than a traditional single player RPG, and that has me worried. Sure, Xenoblade was basically an offline MMORPG in many ways but I don't think the experience will necessarily improve by going online, especially if there is a monthly fee.
That's one heck of an assumption.

The comments in this thread are...confusing to say the least, Im pretty sure xenoblade was talked about enough that people bothered to look at it and know that X is a continuation of this, right? Neogaf?

I never once was under the impression that it was a continuation of Xenoblade. We've had Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade and now X.

"Archaic"? If Xenoblade is archaic, I don't even want to know what Final Fantasy or Tales are.

It's not archaic, but it's based on older JRPGs. If you've played FFXI, FFXII, then you have a pretty good idea of how XB plays. Your character auto-attacks, you set up abilities and positioning. It's been done before.

I still think it's a nice system, and I wouldn't call it archaic. But FFXI had a much more complex version of this battle system 12 years ago.

Yeah this game will struggle to appeal to the masses, no doubt.

He means it's a spiritual successor in terms of gameplay. Which was evident right from the very first trailer.

Feels like people turned on this pretty quick.

Looks a lot like Xenoblade to me, for better or for worse. I'm sure it'll find an audience, but it won't come close to solving any of Nintendo's problems.

I am baffled by the hype around this game. That footage looked like any number of Korean MMOs except that it's offline. Wait around until your guys' meters fill up so they attack the brain-dead enemies who don't react to any of your hit, and just keep waiting until they drop dead.

Someone explain the appeal of this game to me because I'm not seeing it. I admit to not caring about JRPGs in general, but the fever pitch around this game aroused my curiosity anyway. This is hands-down the least impressive Wii U exclusive Nintendo has currently announced, unless there's some layer here I'm missing. Is there some interesting story premise or something? I'm assuming there's some kind of hook that just wasn't shown in that footage.Someone set the record straight for me.

Remember Skyrim? This game had horrible/clunky animations and clipping when you'd see the fighting/combat out of context; yet it was addictive and fun. I think you need to play Xenoblade to understand the satisfaction from the combat. You also need the full package; the story related immersion and open-world setting will do wonders. A battle system like shown in the gameplay trailer seems very befitting to me. It looks amazing. It will be amazing.

The irst monster he kills is Level 13 which means this is probably well after the game has taught you what all the things that are happening mean.

That and they then handled a level 32 monster. This has to be late enough in the game, that you would know what's going on. And it'll be in your native language :p

You know, I'm ok with people saying "you need to play Xenoblade to understand", and I will, but talking about Skyrim's combat isn't really helping.

holy crap did people say Xenoblade looked like Monster Hunter as well? I don't get this at all.

Anyways I'm hyped for this. Xenoblade with mechs in HD is what I wanted :D

When some make those comments I think that is how you identify the people that never played Xenoblade or spent time reading up on it at least or didn't have any understanding as to why they were looking forward to this game. No one that knew what they were cheering on from the reveal should be shocked or disappointed by the combat footage that was shown.

Back to the game. I'm still amazed at how smooth it was for the lead character to jump into the Doll mech fight and then get out of it to continue to fight on foot.

The portraits in the info bar on the side look a bit generic and the names are still just player 1, 2 etc. So I'm still leaning on custom characters. There are seemingly multiple classes/ weapons too. You have the main player with the minigun. One of the female characters with a shield, and another with a knife. The mechs are using different weapons too.

I'm loving how enemy size is emphasized now. That and ranged weapons. There's a really cool part where the player mech dodges the giant ape dude and it gets knocked out on the side of the mountain.

Also....I can't get enough that there's a vocal theme mid battle.

The constant chatter from the characters is annoying :/

It's was like that in the first game, so I wouldn't expect it changing.

That said, the Uk/Euro localization was kind of cool to me so I didn't mind it. If they go that route again I think I will be fine with it.

But if it's Troy Baker or JYB or some shit yelling random stuff then I won't be as fond of it, I suppose.

That didn't look like a "regular" enemy though. There can be low level monsters roaming around that are easy to kill and other higher level ones that you need to avoid or you can challenge if you really want.

"WE CAN DEFINITELY DO THIS!" was literally my favourite thing from the seven hours I played of Xenoblade.

I never get sick of hearing what time it is.

The small one, you mean? If that's an exception, then I'm perfectly fine with that. I was happy with the time it took to beat the big guy, that seemed like a fight that should take some time, but I felt like the small dude took way too long.

Each new trailer makes me hate the game more and more. I miss the old Takahashi. I wish he'd make a new, good turn based game. Xenoblade had one of the worst battle systems I've ever played. No matter how much it's 'polished', there's no making a good battle system out of it.

Wait, does it? I see what you are talking about, but you can't see the full words. If that's true, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Maybe they are from earth and exploring another planet?

I don't know what else it's saying there if not United States.

Is it better then Xenosaga 2's battle system?

I dunno; Xenogears' battle system wasn't exactly hot for the era it was made in. :p

However, Xenosaga 1's battle system could be amazing if they brought it up to modern standards.

Is it better then Xenosaga 2's battle system?

Xenosaga 2's battle system isn't even finished. They pretty much shipped an unfinished product it looks like.

Hard to say. Could have had inflated health to prolong the footage a bit. Or it could be expected health of regular enemies. I guess it's hard to tell at this point. I agree that I was asking myself "man, why so much health" during the stream.

I kind of liked Xeno2's battle system :(

I'm not sure what was happening with the little guy as he's like level 13 and the characters are in their 30-40's but in Xenoblade you can one-shot things that are that much lower than you. I'm guessing they fudged with stuff to show some aspect of the combat.
