I'm not sure what was happening with the little guy as he's like level 13 and the characters are in their 30-40's but in Xenoblade you can one-shot things that are that much lower than you. I'm guessing they fudged with stuff to show some aspect of the combat.

Nice, that's great to know.

I'm ok with this not coming out in 2014, gives me more time to catch up with Xenoblade :3

It's not archaic, but it's based on older JRPGs. If you've played FFXI, FFXII, then you have a pretty good idea of how XB plays. Your character auto-attacks, you set up abilities and positioning. It's been done before.

I still think it's a nice system, and I wouldn't call it archaic. But FFXI had a much more complex version of this battle system 12 years ago.
It's a pretty standard MMO-like battle system. Auto attacks, positioning and cooldowns. Yes, they certainly didn't reinvent the wheel there, but things like the chain and tension mechanics added some depth other games with similar mechanics didn't have, and X apparently adds another layer or two. It looks fun - and that's all I'll ever ask for.

And complexity isn't necessarily a good thing. ;)

It's was like that in the first game, so I wouldn't expect it changing.

That said, the Uk/Euro localization was kind of cool to me so I didn't mind it. If they go that route again I think I will be fine with it.

But if it's Troy Baker or JYB or some shit yelling random stuff then I won't be as fond of it, I suppose.

Oh crap.

The best part of Xenoblade originally not coming over was that it got localised by Nintendo of Europe.

If this ends up having American VA's....

The Nintendo Direct footage actually had me a little worried. The enemies just looked like huge bullet sponges that weren't posing a threat.

But, still, #inmonolithwetrust

Well the first one was level 13 (I think) while there were 4 players with level 25-45
the second enemy was level 32

So the player(s?) were quite overleveled.

Too bad it was the only game without a 2014 in the presentation
btw confirm online co-op already.

We've seen the X's battle system in the very first trailer they've released. Everyone and his dog knew that this would quite obviously be the sequel to Xenoblade.

Also, calling Xenoblade archaic and unambitious has to be the most absurd thing I've read on GAF in quite a while. Whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that Xenoblade is one of the most ambitious JRPGs of the last decade.

My initial hope was that they were simply using Xenoblade's battle system as a placeholder while they were working on assets. I don't think that's too outlandish, considering how much Monolith have liked to switch things up in the past.

And I was strictly referring to the battle system with the archaic comment. It's just a bunch of vanilla MMO mechanics haphazardly stitched together.

Liked the scale and look of the game.

Sadly the garbage system is complete trash to me and I haven't really enjoyed a Monolith Soft title since Saga Eps 1.

The only thing that annoys me is how the ape mother is just sitting there while a party of wild technofreaks with mechs slaughters her children.

I am sure this will be great, but I was a little underwhelmed by the new footage, seemed very dull and lifeless compared to the previous footage. The minigun seemed very weak, digital and odd. Pump up the sounds and make some damage effects, and perhaps minimize all the damage numbers, you cannot see what is actually going on. Do they need to be so big and so many. Just group them togeathe or something I dunno. And just random monsters sitting down super close right next to a big battle....Perhaps I was hoping it would be a bit more interactive, based on previous footage.

Maybe I am just desenstized by Batlefield presentation, ha.

I did love xenoblade, but got a bit bored by it towards the middle.

New screens look so much less intrusive than Xenoblade but I'm sure they'll be able to improve certain aspects. It'd be great to customize what's on your screen like in Monster Hunter 3.

Game looks so good. The environments, the mechas, wonderful.

They should have spliced things together in a story trailer but I really hope they come out with more things soon. I'm so excited.

Go buy xenoblade used while your at it

I guess you're right, I might not really have that option. If it's not clarified by release as to what exactly we're looking at here in terms of story, guess I'll have to gamble and buy on release. (Whether I end up buying something to flip and resell, or hold onto and enjoy will be up in the air though...)

If it's nothing more than just Xenoblade with mechs, I don't think I'll be supporting releases from Monolithsoft going forward.

This looks like some Xenoass Xenoblade.

I'm actually nearing the end of Xenoblade and am enjoying the title. Mechs could be a neat addition to the world.

Pretty sure Takahashi said Xenoblade was a test for their Wii U game. There wasn't a single doubt it would retain the combat system.

Well you could do that in Xenoblade too.

The small one, you mean? If that's an exception, then I'm perfectly fine with that. I was happy with the time it took to beat the big guy, that seemed like a fight that should take some time, but I felt like the small dude took way too long.

Well how it worked in Xenoblade was that low level enemies where colour coded blue when they where several levels lower than you, they tended to ignore you but you could still initiate battles.
Enemies with similar levels had a grey colour I think they could initiate battles if you got close but they where generally fairly easy to kill too.
High level enemies where coloured red and if you got close to those guys they initiate battles so you had to stay out of their way or you where in for a rough time or long battle.

That said this was a demonstration they could have increased the hp of enemies just to get a decent battle out of them to show case a fight.

One thing I'm going to miss from Xenoblade is the whole
seeing into the future
gameplay mechanic. I know it could be annoying if you kept almost dying and had to see the vision again, but I really liked how it worked in general.
Seeing some big attack coming, then going to warn another character to help change the outcome
was really satisfying.

Sigh.... Is this all Japan has to offer these days. Not saying the game doesn't look good but some points get knocked off for being another hack and slash kind of Monster Hunter Xenoblade type game. I was hoping for something a bit more different but it is what it is.

However, I'm definitely going to pick it up and play the hell out of it. Hopefully by the time it comes to America, they have removed all that annoying talking and grunting in the background. I don't understand why they always have to have that in these type of games. It's really unnecessary.

The first quoted paragraph made me think you had played it, but confusion over the prompts almost feels like you didn't, so idk exactly what we're asking, but the prompts are, I guess, little QTEs that sometimes pop up for various things in Xenoblade (warning allies so they can dodge, reviving, etc). It just adds a little bit to combat. It didn't feel as intrusive in Xenoblade, though, but I think the UI is just... way too busy in this one.

I only played the opening segment of Xenoblade, with the three soldiers and a few minutes with the main character, but I hated the battle system so I stopped and never went back. I didn't own the game so it wasn't any big deal for me. Also, this was years back when it launched, so I don't really remember much. Sorry for the confusion on that.

Yeah, I didn't remember the Xenoblade interface being so cluttered and that definitely bothers me since the game itself looks so damn good. My dislike of Xenoblade notwithstanding, I am still gonna give this game a try in hopes that it will rekindle that old XenoGears/Saga feeling.

That sounds pretty cool, thank you for the info.

Came onto GAF expecting people to be excited they showed X.... Find people upset about combat, 'What the hell is this?! The Combat looks so lame?!'.... I don't know why I even bother being optimistic. I guess people got excited because everyone said Xenoblade Chronicles is the best JRPG of last Gen (I think Dark Souls beats, but it surely is #2 for me), but no one actually went to try it out/buy it/look up a youtube video....

I guess a bunch of people in this thread didn't realize X was an RPG or even an actual game and not just a bunch of pretty cutscenes?

the first reveal, it showed direct aiming fps with the mech/doll and slashing a head off a creature. That seems more interative and direct than the xenoblade battle system, and wasnt shown in this latest clip. Hopefully they still have soemthign liek that in the game.

...what? Which is it- MH, hack and slash, or Xenoblade? It can't be all as the three aren't even remotely alike. I think Xenoblade is pretty overrated but love MH, which is the definition of deliberate- nowhere near hack and slash.

Not really feeling the footage, but I'm also not sure why anyone hyped before would be let down now. It looks exactly how I thought a successor to Xenoblade would look.
