Damn! How did you get such clean shots! Gorgeous!
I'm not sure what was happening with the little guy as he's like level 13 and the characters are in their 30-40's but in Xenoblade you can one-shot things that are that much lower than you. I'm guessing they fudged with stuff to show some aspect of the combat.
It's a pretty standard MMO-like battle system. Auto attacks, positioning and cooldowns. Yes, they certainly didn't reinvent the wheel there, but things like the chain and tension mechanics added some depth other games with similar mechanics didn't have, and X apparently adds another layer or two. It looks fun - and that's all I'll ever ask for. It's not archaic, but it's based on older JRPGs. If you've played FFXI, FFXII, then you have a pretty good idea of how XB plays. Your character auto-attacks, you set up abilities and positioning. It's been done before.
I still think it's a nice system, and I wouldn't call it archaic. But FFXI had a much more complex version of this battle system 12 years ago.
Go nintendo posted some photos on there flicker account.

It's was like that in the first game, so I wouldn't expect it changing.
That said, the Uk/Euro localization was kind of cool to me so I didn't mind it. If they go that route again I think I will be fine with it.
But if it's Troy Baker or JYB or some shit yelling random stuff then I won't be as fond of it, I suppose.

Oh crap.
The best part of Xenoblade originally not coming over was that it got localised by Nintendo of Europe.
If this ends up having American VA's....
If this ends up having American VA's....
The Nintendo Direct footage actually had me a little worried. The enemies just looked like huge bullet sponges that weren't posing a threat.
But, still, #inmonolithwetrust
We've seen the X's battle system in the very first trailer they've released. Everyone and his dog knew that this would quite obviously be the sequel to Xenoblade.
Also, calling Xenoblade archaic and unambitious has to be the most absurd thing I've read on GAF in quite a while. Whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that Xenoblade is one of the most ambitious JRPGs of the last decade.

....we could probably spot guess the cast here and now, sadly.
Go buy xenoblade used while your at it
Just use JP voices. There was an option in Xenoblade.
My intial hope was that they were simply using Xenoblade's battle system as a placeholder while they were working on assets. I don't think that's too outlandish, considering how much Monolith have liked to switch things up in the past.
And I was strictly referring to the battle system with the archaic comment. It's just a bunch of vanilla MMO mechanics haphazardly stiched together.
Battle system is based on Xenoblade, but more polished - Takahashi.
New screens look so much less intrusive than Xenoblade but I'm sure they'll be able to improve certain aspects. It'd be great to customize what's on your screen like in Monster Hunter 3.
Game looks so good. The environments, the mechas, wonderful.
They should have spliced things together in a story trailer but I really hope they come out with more things soon. I'm so excited.
The small one, you mean? If that's an exception, then I'm perfectly fine with that. I was happy with the time it took to beat the big guy, that seemed like a fight that should take some time, but I felt like the small dude took way too long.
Nah I'll definitely use the English voices no matter what, but I will be really disappointed if it's American accents I'm listening to rather than the amazing British accents Xenoblade had.
Really doesn't look too hot.
The first quoted paragraph made me think you had played it, but confusion over the prompts almost feels like you didn't, so idk exactly what we're asking, but the prompts are, I guess, little QTEs that sometimes pop up for various things in Xenoblade (warning allies so they can dodge, reviving, etc). It just adds a little bit to combat. It didn't feel as intrusive in Xenoblade, though, but I think the UI is just... way too busy in this one.
Well how it worked in Xenoblade was that low level enemies where colour coded blue when they where several levels lower than you, they tended to ignore you but you could still initiate battles.
Enemies with similar levels had a grey colour I think they could initiate battles if you got close but they where generally fairly easy to kill too.
High level enemies where coloured red and if you got close to those guys they initiate battles so you had to stay out of their way or you where in for a rough time or long battle.
That said this was a demonstration they could have increased the hp of enemies just to get a decent battle out of them to show case a fight.
Well you could do that in Xenoblade too.
Well to be specific I meant being able to move certain aspects of the HUD to the Gamepad.

Sigh.... Is this all Japan has to offer these days. Not saying the game doesn't look good but some points get knocked off for being another hack and slash kind of Monster Hunter Xenoblade type game. I was hoping for something a bit more different but it is what it is.
However, I'm definitely going to pick it up and play the hell out of it. Hopefully by the time it comes to America, they have removed all that annoying talking and grunting in the background. I don't understand why they always have to have that in these type of games. It's really unnecessary.
