Toriyama has truly mastered the art of trolling SE western fans.

"We don't like Lightning", they said.
"You will see more Lightning", Toriyama-Sensei replied.

PS: You guys realized that she's popular in Japan, right?

I love it.

Being an American FF7/6 fan and having Lightning as my favorite FF character puts me in a strange place. I'm cool with it though. Need to finish off this copy of XIII-2 so I can get to LR though :D

I wouldn't be surprised if she's in FFXV. As a matter of fact, I fully expect that to be the case. SE is adamant in shoving this character down our throats despite the seriously tepid response to her and her games.

If she retains her powers from XIII-2 or LR, she's basically able to traverse time, space and all dimensions like Gilgamesh. If they take Lightning after the ending of LR, there's definitely a game coming up she would fit in for a cameo. If they just make a fun non-story related cameo they could put her in KH3 or Tactics 2, or Dissidia 3, or as a DLC fight or party member. Or she could just be a random NPC cameo, or a quest line like XIV. Or it could be costumes like they've done for X and LR. Lots of interesting options honestly.

Having her as a secret optional character, kind of like Cloud in FF Tactics would be cool too. Especially if she would have unique equipment or skills that no one else has.

That vote was only 500 people on a forum only those with an SE account could log into.
500 whole people?! And they have to be SE site members, no less? lol. Thank you for this information Kagari. I always knew that poll was poppycock.

Really? Cause Japan ranked her #1 in their list of best female FF characters.

The same list ranked Zack as #1 so take it as you will, that being said - blind hate gets nowhere, she is a very, very popular character.
Ohp...

Spin off games like Dissida are counted, and SE said that they wanted to make a new Dissidia. Jumping to the conclusion that Lightning will be in FFXV is a bit hasty IMO

In US #1 is Zelda. Elizabeth Comstock is 3rd.

I haven't played those since Ocarina of Time, those games must still be good.

This actually upsets me.
Fuck you, Toriyama.
The only person lightning is popular with is you Motomu. Let her go

My thoughts exactly. Seriously, what's wrong with him and Square? Are they seriously THIS deluded? They really need to get some clue from the people around the world and not just japan. Most people hate her AND FF13. FFS stop looking at the sales only. Or if you do, look how FF 13-2 and LR dropped hard compared to the first entry.

It's a shame this is a Japanese title because a petition about banishing her from future FF games would easily pass at Senate.

Toriyama needs to go. I am so sick of his crazy obsession with Lightning. He has almost single-handedly ruined Final Fantasy

Heh, I am not seeing how a single character can ruin an entire franchise as long as it is still good. Joel from Last of Us or Marcus Fenix from Gears of War for some people was not the most likable characters, but the games were still great for example. If the franchise is being ruined or deteriorating, I think it would have more to do with the quality of the game going down instead of a character imo.

1,000 is used for most statistically sound polls. 500 isn't a lot, but it's not nothing either.

Statistics have no place here - only blind hatred over a character that is currently the bandwagon character to hate.

I don't get it... but meh, people also say FF6>7. To each their own :)

Japan ranked her #1 among female FF characters

You think that might have something to do with the fact that she's constantly advertised, constantly featured, and whenever she's added to a game they make a big announcement out of her? Popularity by brute force. Name one female FF character who gets even half that level of attention from Square. Just half, doesn't even have to be the same amount.

Quick, somebody do a White House petition asking Obama to impose sanctions against Japan until Square ends Lightning's reign of mediocrity.

I wouldn't be surprised if at this point they changed FFXIV Odin to be Lightning on her Odin.

That would be pretty damn amazing honestly. Have her under the huge helmet, so you can't tell until late in the summon as she rides off in the darkness and takes off her helmet.

Better than a random nameless knight/king.

Random samples are pretty important for a statistically sound poll.

So actually, yeah, it is literally nothing.

That's a fair point. It's not fully representative of the whole of Japan, but it's still something.

Suffer, GAF!
Beyond the individual games, Lightning has been popular among characters in gaming. In 2010, she was ranked as the 34th most popular video game character in Japan in a Famitsu poll.[107] Out of all the Final Fantasy XIII cast, Lightning was voted as the most popular character in a Microsoft poll.[108] In a VideoGamer.com's listing of the best ten Final Fantasy characters, Lightning was sixth with the writer Yin Poole finding her interesting in the course of the game despite still finding her similar to Cloud.[109] In 2011, IGN ranked Lightning among the best Final Fantasy characters, saying that she demonstrated that "a delicate balance can exist between strength and tenderness, even in the midst of her incredible acrobatic feats."[110] In GameZone's list regarding the same subject, Lightning was eighth owing to her visual appearance as well as the character's determination which made her "one of the strongest female leaders of the Final Fantasy series."[111] Cheat Code Central also listed her as one of the top ten "badass" women of video games for her independence that distances her from previous Final Fantasy heroines.[112] Lightning also ranked second in AfterEllen's list of the "hottest" video game characters.[113] In Game Informer's list of top ten heroes of 2010, Lightning was ranked eighth and praised for her as the only protagonist in Final Fantasy XIII who seemed capable of taking on the corrupt government of Cocoon and that her no-nonsense approach to her mission made her the game's standout hero.[114] In 2013, Lightning was voted the favorite female Final Fantasy character in an official poll by Square Enix,[115] and was also ranked twice in lists by Complex as the 19th greatest Final Fantasy character[116] and the 39th greatest heroine in video game history.[117] Professional journalists and game developers have also ranked her high among important female video game characters, with her coming third in a list of top female characters in an RPG or JRPG during a panel at PAX Prime 2013.[118]

Stay salty, NeoGAF. I welcome the next appearance of our Goddess Lightning!

Nah but seriously this probably just means appearances in spin-offs which is cool. As long as it's her FF13 outfit!

She's being pushed on the same level as Cloud and Zack but XIII has nowhere near the impact the VII series has on the gaming industry.

It's ridiculous.

I only liked her as a soldier, and even then her personality turned out disappointing.

Once they shifted her into an almighty goddess/savior, it was hard for me to care for her at all.

Before you try to insult people, maybe you should understand how statistic pools are gathered? (e.g. not a collection from a single group)

I wasn't insulting anyone...? I'm speaking about western gamers in general, it seems like FFXIII/Lightning is a popular thing to hate (like the ending of ME3).

In due time things will come into perspective and I think people will appreciate the games on a more even keel.

And I do know how statistical pools are gathered - I studied it for quite some time. This is from a SE poll - meaning fans of ALL FF's are included, ergo she is still very popular amongst FF fans.

Not being satisfied that enough people liked Lightning they will push, and push, and push some more until finally EVERYONE accepts Lightning.

I actually like her more in Lightning Returns than the previous two games. Her interaction with Snow I thought was particularly good.

That being said, she isn't the deepest character, and it took the writers three games to really give her any sense of depth. However I'm happy with how LR has turned out, and I wouldn't mind her making an appearance in a spinoff title or as a secret summon/character.

Chances are it would just be a very minimal cameo, so I don't really see the need to be upset.

She's popular to the FF core audience (ie Japan) and that's what matters. Still, she has been over exposed and she needs a break. Let's leave her happy and move on.

I said meh not "omg i hate Cloud!" I don't see people getting hyped for Cloud appearances anymore. It's either so expected, or people just don't really care too much.
No, there are many things that continue to show Cloud is still the most popular and well known FF lead.

Even when Crisis Core was developed one of the questions the devs got asked most often was if Cloud would be playable.

Its just now we have things like Dissidia and TR, Cloud fans are able to get more, same goes for KH. We just know he isn't nor should he ever be inserted in a new Mainline game.

Why does she get a special treatment? No other main cast character has ever re-appeared in another FF mainline title.

Five years is a long time for the bandwagon effect. Comparing it to Mass Effect 3's ending isn't doing you any favors either.
