Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Yet another update to my roster…

final55.png

Oh, I like that! It does make sense for Mii to be offset from the other characters, assuming you get to choose which Mii you want to play as from your Mii Maker, of course.

I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with Mii... They've got to at least have the ability to let you play as your own Mii characters, otherwise it wouldn't make much sense to include them in the first place. But I wonder if the customization might go deeper than that... I think Mii could potentially be a big part of the 3DS to Wii U interaction and the customization aspect of the game that's been mentioned.

I think Mii could potentially be a big part of the 3DS to Wii U interaction and the customization aspect of the game that's been mentioned.

Hm, yeah, now that you mention it... after all, you have stuff like Mii Plaza that lets you unlock accessories for your Miis and such. Plus, Find Mii, which is part of Mii Plaza, is a stage for the 3DS version.
Seems like Miis are pretty much inevitable at this point. I just really wonder what they're gonna do with them, because anything I could see them do are already represented in some shape by Villager and, to a lesser extent, Wii Fit Trainer.

I really think Miis are going to have customizable movesets, with the option to disable them for those concerned with balance/tiers.

Namco is helping to develop this game, and Combot had a customizable moveset in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. I think it's doable. It also fits in with the Mii concept because unlike every other character in the game, Mii isn't tied down to a specific series. It's a cross-platform, multi-game avatar. It does whatever the genre of a given game calls for -- and in Smash Bros.' case, that means fighting.

Over at the graphics thread, a lot seem upset with the Wii U visuals.

Out of curiosity, how do you guys feel about them?

I like them, but aside from a few characters (Mega Man/Olimar/Marth/Little Mac etc.) it's more low-poly than I expected with some weird textures.

I mean, hey, you can't complain with it supposedly being at 60 FPS, but still. I'm sure it'll look way better in motion (DK's fur is in motion blur, right? Maybe that's why his fur looks bad to people in stills).

Agreed about SmashGAF. I joined SmashBoards back in 2001(!?), but the community itself became so oversaturated with ridiculousness that I gradually faded away. SmashGAF is on the whole much more positive and absolutely more enjoyable. <3 you all.

They're actually cheaper than that now, but thing is Amazon.jp won't ship certain items to the states.

Nice find! I took the plunge and snagged one. Should arrive tomorrow (since I have Prime), so I will let you know what I think when it comes in!

The mayflash adapter seems fine for GC controllers, I haven't really noticed lag with it. So I don't know why everyone bemoans the loss of GC as an option.
It's the loss of the GC controller being officially supported with plugs in the system. One of the reasons it lasted so long was because it was the only wired controller compatible on the Wii, which was necessary for tournament play. That's why the competitive scene is concerned about Smash 4, not just for the lack of the GameCube controller, but the lack of any wired controller period.

Like them, glad they're aiming for 1080/60fps and I do think it's a noticeable jump from Brawl (too many people are using Dolphin as a frame of reference), but I wouldn't say it looks all that impressive.

I hope that there's a stage that gives all the characters that watercolor effect akin to the Little Mac Trailer, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Street Fighter IV.

That would make me so happy seeing all those outlines and all the attacks being given a "painted" effect.

Fireballs would look so much more dynamic and I think that all the effects that you see for sword slashes and what not would look amazing in that kind of art style.

It's a lot like how Flat Zone/Hanenbow made your characters flat, but this takes it to another level.

What Wii game do you think I should I tackle next from this list SmashGAF?

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Zelda: Skyward Sword
Metroid: Other M
Xenoblade
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

I'm trying to get through my backlog in anticipation for this game and I have all those sitting in my shelf right now. My goal is to get through all of them before this game comes out. I want to play Xenoblade, but my time is limited right now due to school, but if it's that good, I'll gladly play it even if the experience is a bit fragmented for a couple of months.

I figure this would be the best place to ask because I assume most of you guys are all caught up with your Nintento games :)

Did you buy it from Amazon jp? They won't ship to the states with my Amazon jp account.

I used to be big on Smashboards too and I just stopped too mainly because the scene got so big and full of younger people who were just a bit bothersome to be around.

Before college I was from NorCal so I'd use to always go to Smash meet ups with PewPewU, Zhu, Toph, HomeMadeWaffles, Isai, and all to play and enjoy ourselves. Random trips to SoCal were really fun too. Then after a while Smashboards got pretty bad, especially after Brawl and it made me and a lot of other people feel disoriented from the community. I recently made an account and joined again only because of Project M but Smashboards is still full of irritating people.

Out of all the FGCs, Smash is the best and the worst. On one hand you have amazing people like Prog and HungryB0x who enjoy the metagame and on the other it's just the trash talk immaturity from Leffen and a lot of other "casual" members that give off the wrong vibe.

I hope after a while it becomes a bit more professional like the Capcom fighters and the anime fighters like Blazblue and Persona. There are exceptions to the rule like FilipinoChamp and ChrisG, but by and large, I think Smash could benefit a lot from tidying up and being a bit more presentable.

DKC Returns. That way, you'll be ready for the sequel to come out in the US next week. ;)
(I picked up the new game the other day, and it's great! Just as difficult as the previous installment, but in a wholly satisfying way.)

I also really liked SS, but I didn't end up finishing it... I was back at home for a little over a week last summer, and I tried to finish it in three days but was unsuccessful. The worst part is that I got to the last boss the morning of my flight and had to stop playing right before the battle began.

I would be shocked if the Miis had a customizable moveset. That would make selecting a Mii overly complex and difficult, which is something that the development team would want to avoid.

Instead, Miis will probably control like the Villager, with them using various objects from games that they star in, like baseball bats, golf clubs, tennis rackets, ping pong paddles, frisbees, or even cows.

But in the end, I just want to see Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and Mao Zedong deck it out to see who is truly the greatest dictator of all time.

I did! I live in Tokyo, though, so Amazon.jp is really my best and only option, lol.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't want to blame it on "the casuals" because that sounds condescending (and maybe even a little hypocritical?), but I agree that the average user age dropped about 10 years between Melee and Brawl. Couple that with the invasion of the YouTube crowd and, well, there you have it. :( I pop in now and again, but only very rarely, and I can't even remember the last time I posted.

I will say, though, that I think the Smash community itself is wonderful and has given birth to some great friendships for me and many others. Given its "party-style fighter" presentation, I don't know if we'll ever see the game get "tidied up", per se, but I won't hold out hope--especially if Smash 4 is solid enough to win over the competitive crowd and bring back some of the hardcore Melee players who were disappointed with Brawl.

DONKEY KONG OMG

Xenoblade too if you can find/afford it!

I would start with Other M so you open up with the worst of the list and can enjoy the rest (I know nothing about FE, though, or if that one's considered shit).

Over at the graphics thread, a lot seem upset with the Wii U visuals.

Out of curiosity, how do you guys feel about them?

I'm perfectly content with all of Nintendo's first-party titles for the Wii U, they all look great and seem like they'll "last", so to speak, and not look outdated anytime soon.

It helps all of them are going for a bright, colorful look which works better over prolonged periods.

Honestly, I pretty much just ignore all graphical discussions pertaining to games outside of stylistic choices, they just aggravate me.

You can get through Other M in the shortest time. With school, it might take a couple of days to finish. And 100% the missiles and stuff. They're hard to miss.
I haven't played Returns or Radiant Dawn but I'm guessing Returns would be the next shortest.
I tried playing Xenoblade in parts during the school year but it just didn't click with me that way. I had to play it during a long school break.
Skyward Sword is like 40+ hours or so.

Gotcha, man I miss Japan. I grew up in Sapporo and I used to go to Japan every summer,

Which district? Akasaka? Kichijoji?

Yeah I mean the average Smashboards user was pretty irritating, not the casual audience as a whole.

Looking at this, this, and this, I just don’t think it’s possible to accurately convey the spirit of the Mii by pulling from existing games. Miis don’t have a focus — they do whatever they need to, and they show up in new games all the time. Villager plays like a consolidation of the Animal Crossing series, Little Mac plays like a consolidation of the Punch-Out!! series, and so on, but you can’t condense the Mii down like that because it doesn’t have a home series. Its debut appearance was technically a preloaded Wii channel.

Whatever the case, I’m looking forward to seeing how they’re implemented.

The worst SmashBoards experience I ever had was when I mentioned how I thought Genesect would be a cool character, and this listed some (imo) decent reasons why he might have a chance, mainly being of focus in the series around the time I assumed Smash 4 was in development, this was just a year ago or so before it was revealed at E3. Plus I just thought having a "mecha" character would be cool, and Sakurai seems to like anime stuff like that.

This one dude was like "that's all well and good, but I think people who want Genesect in might now want him in for all the right reasons".

That really pissed me off, because I don't know what reason he expected besides the fact that I'd like to see a Nintendo character I enjoy in a game dedicated to Nintendo. Some people really treat Smash Roster picks like the Presidential election.

But in the end, I just want to see Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and Mao Zedong deck it out to see who is truly the greatest dictator of all time.
I'm hoping AE's "Mad Men Football" will fulfill that!

The graphics look nice by themselves, but it's the facial expressions that really raise the bar over Brawl.

Speaking of expressions, this one really nails the difference IMO

Bolded my choice, if you have any interest in the Tropical Freeze sequel coming out soon, I'd say play the original. Even if you aren't, it's the best for short play sessions and is really fun. As for Xenoblade, it's hard to back that b/c I personally am over 50 hours in the game with occasional 1-3 hour nightly sessions and I'm still a long way from beating it.

Yeah, a lot of presumptuous people and fans who were extremely overzealous (in a bad way) kind of ruined the experience for me. That said, I still hold out hope that things will improve!

Wait really? Wonder how he missed that.

Same here. I wonder if ROB was last minute addition to the character roster.

I'm curious about one thing with Mii. How can they make Mii that wouldn't look out of place in the battle since I'm pretty sure that they would have to add something to the characters to make them matching up with the casts?

Agreed about SmashGAF. I joined SmashBoards back in 2001(!?), but the community itself became so oversaturated with ridiculousness that I gradually faded away. SmashGAF is on the whole much more positive and absolutely more enjoyable. <3 you all.

I agreed with you there. SmashGAF does have some nice members tho.

Heh, speaking of Wii games, I'm trying to get to the ones I've missed out on so I can have my collection finished.

Need to buy:

Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Kirby's Adventure Wii
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Little King's Story
MadWorld
Metroid: Other M
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Pandora's Tower
Punch-Out!!
Wario Land: The Shake Dimension
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
Wii Sports Resort

DKCR I'm most likely buying later today second hand, and other than that Punch-Out is the only other one that I'm really itching to play ASAP.

Fire Emblem and Kirby's Adventure I might just give a miss due to prices. FE especially I'd want to play Path of Radiance first, and the only PAL one I can see on ebay is $150 @_@

OT: I'm mostly happy with Smash 4 Wii U's graphics. Some of the character models could be better though. Link, Marth, Bowser, Pikachu and Dedede look especially good, they've been majorly overhauled from Brawl, while others like Zelda, Fox and DK barely look changed from their Brawl models.

Not for a while, broke university student with no time. I definitely will go back though because it's where I culturally identify myself with and the fact that I technically have dual American-Japanese citizen through the inheritance clause.

I hope they do push for a worldwide release for SSB4 though and for the online play to be significantly improved. I have international friends I want to play with and the shoddy internet doesn't really help.

I do hope Sakurai bring back some older JP games like Soma Bringer, obscure stuff rather than what fans and shareholders want.

Playlist for stages, A means to record an entire match into a .mov file or something instead of what Brawl did. Maybe NicoNico and Youtube support.

Character/Stage select screens are brighter and more colorful than the ones in Brawl.

Add some mini-games or combo challenges like the ones in Street Fighter III: Third Strike and other fighting games.

I still can't believe my three most wanted pre-E3 newcomers have already been confirmed: Villager, Mega Man, and Little Mac. I really don't have the right to complain about the roster from this point forward. (Unless there are cuts!)

Has anyone else been so lucky?

I need Palutena (probably going to happen) and Ridley (50/50 on atm) to have my most wanted newcomers in the game. I guess Mewtwo as well if he counts as a newcomer?

EDIT: Mega Man was my most wanted followed by Ridley, Palutena, Little Mac and Mewtwo before E3. I guess Rosalina fills the bill for 'inevitable mario newcomer who doesn't suck' as well. Keep flip-flopping on how much I care about a DK newcomer though, think the inevitability of Dixie despite me preferring K. Rool is making me not care as much?

I hate to sound like broken records but I felt same way here.

Original Top 5 wanted characters before E3

1. Mega Man
2. Little Mac
3. Takamaru
4. Palutena
5. Animal Crossing Representative (Such as Tom Nook)

I kept updating my Top 5 wanted characters and moved up characters from top 10 into top 5.

1. Takamaru
2. Palutena
3. Pac Man
4. Isaac
5. Duck Hunt Dog

Number 4 and 5 are bonus characters, so if they didn't get in then it's not really big deal since they already have extremely low chance and I'm being realistic with their chances.

I thought Rosalina was one of your top 10 characters unless I recalled it wrong?

Mega Man and Mac were my top wanted newcomers. And Mario is my main so I'm happy.

She was, but my list fluctuated after the first few characters. Villager, Mega Man, and Little Mac are the characters I wanted the most, and then Ridley, I think. The rest kept changing around.

For me it was Shulk, Hades and Mewtwo at E3.

After playing W101 it's Wonder Red, Shulk and Hades. I'm gonna be let down :P

My most wanted character choices are, in order, 1. Lip, 2. Takamaru, 3. Anna, 4. Sami, and 5. Roy
(Ashley and Viridi were up there prior to their disconfirmations.)

So no, I don't plan on getting lucky in the slightest :(

Mega Man and Villager [any AC character] were big wants and I was PUMPED they got in. Little Mac as well.

All I need is Chibi Robo to be completely 100% happy, but I've already accepted that he's a long shot so I'm more than content.

Ike and Lucario were my most wanted in Brawl.

Ridley was my number 3, and I'm still waiting for him.

At least Dixie's likely...
