The Order 1886 Gameplay Footage

Very underwhelmed by the reveal. Mostly the same complaints others have like the generic gameplay and the horrible QTEs. Was hoping this gen would bring something new instead of the usual generic fps and third person action games that have been plaguing the "AAA" industry for years, but it seems to be heading in that direction again. Unless something drastically different is shown later for this game I don't see how this is anything more than a $3 weekend rental with the $57 saved being used for something worth owning.

Its not just a shooter
The Order: 1886 takes strides to bridge gameplay with cinematics in new and interesting ways, but the foundation reminds me of Uncharted. For starters, much of combat is carried out via third-person gunplay where taking cover is an essential element. The Order even takes cues from The Last of Us, with Galahad and co. faced forward in a realistic fashion when crouched behind a wall or object. But there's also a great deal of traversal; in this demo, Galahad and Lafayette climbed over and under obstacles and leaped between buildings in somewhat scripted fashion. Meanwhile, quiet moments of exploration and conversation offer constant storytelling, Naughty Dog-style. In fact, it's fair to say that, in this particular demo, infrequent combat moments punctuated an otherwise contemplative atmosphere, not the other way around.

Worth quoting for those who are still assuming the game will be all shoot-shoot bang-bang based on the footage.

This writer has no idea what "emergent gameplay" really means. Neither does the director I guess. WTF.

Every time he opens his mouth, he sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. It's all vagaries and PR fluff. Reminds me of Denis Dyack talking about Too Human in the early days.

What's so wrong about that statement? You think the game won't have a big focus on coverbased shooting and QTE's won't be a relatively common thing through out the game?

Maybe I should have replied to a different person. But to say it's just another tps and it's looks boring. Over 5 seconds of footage is pretty ridiculos.

All quotes about ryse, where is the GUSHING that you are referring to

Understand the context. We are talking about a game that was coming out at launch before the systems were out.

whats not to be impressed at a launch game with 20+ enemies on screen when i've never seen a next gen console game on either console yet. Now that bboth systems has been out for months, and i've seen what next gen has to offer, why isn't it valid that i'm, not impressed with the order, which is coming out a year after launch, with what was shown?

I hope I'm not thinking of someone else but I could have sworn it was you. I sincerely apologize if that isn't the case. I still think your being a bit irrational with how you are perceiving the game but you are of course entitled to that opinion

Everything in that trailer looks to be different segments, cobbled/edited together to show some basic gameplay.

That said, the game looks completely atmospheric and mostly phenomenal. This being a teaser/tasting of what they're cooking up - without showing a whole lot - leaves me pretty hyped for the future showings.

This is really not the type of footage that would create hype in me... Very cinematic. I was hoping this type of gameplay could be left behind in the last generation. I don't mind some QTEs, but the gunplay also looks lacklustre. And while the graphics look great, this should be 60fps if they really need to add the black bars.

AH didn't see this mention

Here's where I delve into Weerasuriya's claims of emergent gameplay and explain what it all means. As the demo opens, Galahad (your character) and Lafayette are looking out over Whitechapel, a district thought to house operations and members of the resistance. There's air support waiting to give our intrepid antiheroes a hand, and as the two discuss their battle plans, Galahad takes out a monocular and peers out over the city. Without a single missed beat, the camera transitions to peering through the looking glass--suddenly, and without a tutorial message, control of the monocular is handed to the player. Galahad and Lafayette continue talking as the demonstrator spies out locations, and when it's time to call that air support, a series of touchpad holds and presses creates a Morse code message to the zeppelins above the city.

The camera transitions (again, without interruption to the cutscene's rhythm) to an over-Galahad's-shoulder view, and the player is able to rotate and inspect the foreign, yet aesthetically familiar, gun at will. A few seconds later, the cutscene continues as if control was never subtly handed to the player. No game I've seen has done so with such

Nice use of the touchpad.

NICE!!! Like the sound of it all. This is the kind of detail I'm looking for in previews. Not 'confirmed fears' about bugs in a game that is at 8 months from release!

People said the same thing about TLOU before it came out, and they even might have been right. But it's one of the best games of 2013, and many would say the generation. A game with these elements doesn't mean that's all there is.

Some people seem to be so quick to denounce something that doesn't match exactly what their thinking. Come on, the game looks awesome, the setting/atmosphere is amazing, and I'm sure the gameplay they showed is just a sliver on what's to come. Sure, the TPS moments do look generic, but I don't think it's a good measure on the entire game. And to be honest, using TLoU as an example, it really doesn't do anything groundbreaking in terms of gameplay, but the production value and storytelling is impeccable, which is what made it so special for me. And I can possibly see something like that with The Order as well, but still too little information on the game to really say. In short, wait for E3 for a more detailed showcasing of the game to make a better judgement.

I'm really curious about the nonhuman enemies now. It seems like they'll be a prominent threat but we've barely seen anything about them in any released footage. What could be so significant/surprising about them that the developers want to keep them obscured for as long as possible?

Exactly why I think they succeeded this week. They managed to frustrate us by not showing enough, but they still have us talking about it. The ending segment of that trailer is such a tease (I wonder if that portion is in-engine as well)! E3 2014 is going to be crazy!

Now you guys are reaching. I don't care how warped their minds are, this is not the kind of buzz they want. I love the premise of the game and given that Sony has become pretty damned good at this cinematic SP stuff over the years I have a feeling it will be wicked awesome... but nothing they have shown so far has me aching to play it. And that's what you want.

I like what I saw but I didn't like how much they showed. We've waited 8 months and this was all we got..... they should've just showed this at VGX. At this point I was expecting at least a mission length demo. Just 1 mission. Currently I don't even think this will make it for the Fall time frame.

But like with all games and all footage, we can only really judge what we're shown. And to a lot of people, these 5 seconds we've seen so far makes it look like a decidedly generic third person cover shooter as far as gameplay goes. Maybe later on we will see gameplay that will change peoples perception of that. And if that happens, great.

Looks definetly stunning. Best next gen graphics so far (with a few rough edges in texturing due to being early).
Gameplay looks peculiar, we have seen really little and I was expecting something along Uncharted.
Instead they're talking about a Gear of War/ Beyond cinematic hybrid which is definelty intriguing but we need to see more (also we have yet to see the destructible environments).

Umm, not sure what a brief comment about a game containing walking, constant narration and scripted jumps is supposed to say about it not mostly being a shooter. It might very well be a good shooter, or indeed turn out to be quite different when we see more, but that's not really possible to tell at this point or from that quote.

For me reading the Eurogamer preview, looking at the footage and knowing that the developers are talking about cinematic experiences and "branching melee" (now that's a buzzword for the ages) it certainly doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for in games these days. Sad, but them's the breaks.

I just really want to see the physics and destructuon in action. I may be getting ahead of myself but I'm wishing that I'm as impressed with this engine as much as I was the first time i saw those source engine demos or the first time I saw euphoria in action.

Why not just release the whole "Jaw Dropping" reel that the press supposedly saw a few weeks ago and everyone was waiting for?

I can't get hyped anymore for games where I'll be spending more time watching than playing, no matter how good they look. And this looks phenomenally good. The atmosphere, the incredible lighting, the cloth on the characters… it's truly beautiful.

But then it's "branching" QTEs and "somewhat scripted" platforming and "cinematic storytelling" via linear corridors.

Terrible reveal.

Check the IGN preview. If that's how a professional expresses his fears, even after explicitly being told of the state of the build, imagine how the public would tear it to shreds.

I've never really considered IGN to be professionals :-) Point taken though.

I'm just saying it's not all just shooting, which is what some people are taking away from the footage. There'll be time for slow exploration (pretty sure a preview from a while ago talked about the group 'solving a crime', which could be linked to the several screenshots and glimpses of footage of the members exploring a dark building with lanterns) and possibly soft-body physics based puzzles (according to an insider), so it ain't going to be just a straight-up shooter.

There is no MP right? Because this game just from the gameplay seen seems like a great fit for some kind of horde mode. Also I thought some sort of monsters were involved? At least that is what I remember from the E3 trailer.

I definitely want to see alot more after today.

Still did not see many key aspects.

Yeah. As we know from the first trailer, it's not supposed to be about just fighting regular humans.

Also, I don't think the graphics should really be judged based on a youtube video. Things look much different when it's actually being played on your screen.

Sure but would assume that most posters understand that there might be slower moments (many are shown, even). HL2 has tons of them and is still touted as an FPS, albeit a damn good one. To me the comment and quoting of it seemed a bit overly defensive, that's all---might be me misreading things, if so then I'm sorry :)

This.

Sometimes I get the impression thay they think they're bigger than the games themselves.

The game looks great hopefully we get to see more sooner than later. One of the best looking games i have seen so far.

nice find. had not see some of what is shown in that vid.
now we just need this on gamersyde... or new login/password for Sony's press site.

You can be certain the reason why it's been changed is because people kept posting it everywhere, like this : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=100504880&postcount=301
I don't really think SCEA found that kind of comment particularly amusing...

So now, SCEE has decided to go Youtube only, and I (and others of course) can't get into SCEA's press center anymore too. Beautiful.

I am surprised that it took them so long. Not too long ago, the same account was shared on reddit and it had almost the same password, i have no idea why it got closed now. I reckon this account was quite old and has been known for years.

I have a feeling this game is going to be ultra immersive. With you pretty much having direct control of the game even during cutscenes and during scripted fights. Sounds like they want things to be scripted during these moments, but still give the player something to do at all times and some way to have control over what is happening on screen. The movements may be scripted, but what you actually see is up to you at most times.

Pure speculation of course. The game could have a grand total of 10 scripted fights out of 5,000 lol, just do not know.

With a game looking this phenomenal, man ... it could be truly mind blowing to sit down and play. I truly have never seen a game look like CG until this one. Everyone thought 100% the E3 footage was CG. And here we see it live and there is absolutely 0 difference between scripted cutscene and open ended action. Truly phenomenal work by RAD.

I do not think my mind can handle what Naughty Dog has in store.

Yeah it's been around for years (at least 6), but they kept it when they moved from their old (and utterly terrible) press site to the current one for E3 last year. It's only in the past six months that it's gotten out of hand. Just search for SC3APR on this forum, it's just madness.
Though it should also prove to Sony that people are hungry for high quality videos with this new, but I'm not sure that's what they got out of this whole mess.

Looks pretty cool. I hope that it becomes more open than it looks. Doesn't have to be open world, but a little more would be nice.

Hopefully I'm actually able to afford a PS4 by the time this comes out. It looks like it's at least worth one playthrough.
