Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Yep I'm also crashing when I try to interact with storage, campfire, etc. If you inventory them and replace, they work, but no way I'm doing that with all the storage. Hopefully they fix soon.

I just beat the tutorial quests and now and just working on the silver tier of armor. Also looking into things I've ignored a bit like farming and cooking. But I'll wait till things get fixed.

TAKE NOTE

From the website concerning the last hotfix patch for the patch patch fix patch update thingamajig.

http://playstarbound.com/

WARNING: If you have not yet started playing, please make a backup of your ship file, which is located in your steam folder/player/*.shipworld and backups of your world files located in your steam folder/universe/*.world

CLARIFICATION: We’ve already pushed a partial fix for this issue that ought to prevent more containers from being erased. Please let us know if this is not the case.

A few hours ago, we pushed a second hotfix to Enraged Koala to fix an issue with seats and beds not being interactive. It worked fine in our limited test cases, but we quickly discovered after pushing from community feedback that it was deleting containers from some preexisting worlds. Some of these were things like the shiplocker and fuelhatch which cannot be legitimately obtained in the game, rendering that ship unplayable.

The only fix for this issue right now is to remove your shipworld and allow the game to regenerate them, or restore from backup if you have one. You will lose the contents of your ship if you do not have a backup.

We are all deeply sorry for the lost data, and will work hard in the future to prevent issues like this from occurring.

Going to update the server now, give it a few minutes to update.

Also, general advice, always backup your Starbound save files, if the latest issues are anything to go by, just because they said stuff isnt suppose to be wiped, doesnt neccessarily mean you're safe.

Additionally, might as well throw this out there because hell, it bears repeating: ITS A BETA. Not only that, we're still in the EARLY part of the beta (Stage 1 of 3) You should be expecting this kind of crap to happen anyway. The fact that it doesn't happen that often is great, but still, you should always expect it.

So glad I put all the crafting stuff in the core of gafworld as a 3rd backup. Also have a single player homeworld with the crafting stuff. Don't care if I have to pseudo restart stuff, my gear is the main thing and I can reacquire the rest lol.

edit: Actually I didn't lose too much. 5 lockers and my 2k solarium fuel....Right now just salvaging what I can off the ship onto my SP homeworld so I can regenerate it.

Luckily I don't have anything of value yet, lol. And I'm not going to try to stress too much about game items anyways. Not that I won't look into backing things up, just not going to fret an unreasonable amount.

Welp, there goes my desire to play. Lost a ton of my costumes and instruments.

I think at this point I'm just going to wait a few months before I play Starbound again.

I mean I love the game and I have like 50 hours playtime with it already, but there are some nice changes coming down the road and they still seem to be breaking things regularly. Plus, I know damn well I'm going to play this extensively when it does finally reach release status, so in the meantime I think I'm just going to put Starbound aside and work on my backlog and other games until then. I'll play a bit now and then just to explore, see whats new, and to hear the beautiful music, but I'll just play to dabble with no intention of serious play until it goes Gold.

It's a great game, but beta is beta. I've had my fun, I've satisfied my curiosity, and I own the game so I'm happy. Now I'll just wait until it's ready for me and I don't really care how long they take even. Be it one year or three, I'll be there day one at release.

Well gafworld has a bunch of instruments and some costume stuff for those who lost stuff. Only garbage weapon crates were lost in gafworld lol.

Is the Valentines stuff the same deal as the Christmas thing? Monsters drop items used in crafting?

Nope, it uses a lot of fabric/plant fibre for most of the valentines stuff

Ugh. New version broke a shit load of mods.

Let's all do the beta dance.

This is what people get for becoming too invested in something that is not release candidate. I've decided to not touch the game until the beta is done. I hope those that *are* playing in the beta, are doing so for the purpose of giving feedback to help improve the game, and not just because they're impatient and want want now now me me.

Another patch/hotfix hit, they seem to have added an auto-backup that will kick-in before it patches.

Other than that, just fixes bugs.

As usual, server will be down for a bit while I update it. Give it a few minutes.

Just got a new MBP and I'm looking for some cool games to play on it. Starbound worth getting now? I tried looking for a mac version of Terraria but it looks like i'll have to use some sort of wrapper.

Looks like another update (no surprise there).

PAY ATTENTION BEFORE UPDATING:

While it does fix some bugs, it also introduces a NEW BIOME.

READ: NEW BIOME. The HECK Biome (Yes, they called it Heck)

As usual, backup your Save folders (PLAYER and UNIVERSE), before initiating the update. According to the devs, you don't need to completely wipe out your saves to get to the new sector, but they recommend you visit your planets before updating, so that way they'll carry over.

That's their words, not mine, but my understanding is that as long as the world has been generated into your Universe folder, it should carry over. But will not contain the Heck Biome. However, any new world you go to, there's a chance it'll be generated.

Anyway, don't worry about the Server, I'm backing it up right now anyway before pulling the trigger on the update.

I really want to play this together with a friend, but we just can't seem to start a server that works for both of us. It's incredibly annoying. Why can't they just integrate steamworks? We've opened the ports, we've done everything and it just doesn't work.

What network setup do you have? (modem, router, isp)

Not really an "update", more like a "this is more of a elaboration of what we want to work on next":

Hi guys,

So today we spent our Sunday having a long (5 hours!) design discussion in which we are pencilling in the finer details of the games progression.

As we said before, the current progression is entirely temporary, existing to provide temporary gameplay whilst we work on the engine. Today I want to share more with you about the games new structure and the beginning of the game.

First of all we’re removing the different universe sectors. In the final game there will be only three sectors. The sector the majority of the game takes place in, a pvp sector and a creative sector without dangers.

Instead of progressing through the game sector by sector, you’ll advance by upgrading your tech to allow you to visit planets that were otherwise inaccessible due to hazards. An example being a planet with no breathable air. Progression will be less linear and more akin to the kind of progression you find in modern metroidvanias.

We’re building the game with 3 main paths of progression that branch off later on. Farming, adventuring and building. We want players to be able to advance through the game whilst doing whatever they enjoy most.

At the beginning of the game (what would be the alpha sector in the current progression) you start on a ship with a broken fuel module, giving you access to only one planet. Through a series of quests you’re taught how to farm, find trophies in dungeons and build the beginnings of a settlement. Completing these quests will give you the pixels you need to use your ships 3d printer to produce a new fuel module. Which in turn allows progression to the other planets in your current solar system.

At this stage were introducing a new planet type called an outpost. A small and safe planet populated by members of every race. A safe haven for trade and quest taking. You’ll learn how to generate pixels through selling crops, taking quests, selling trophies found in dungeons and renting out houses in your settlement.

From here each of these roles will expand outwards as you progress (for example animal farming becomes an optional part of the farming progression).

More on that later

Can't wait till the game is optimized and I can actually play it. Framerate is so low now whenever there are enemies on the screen.

Really awesome stuff in the horizon. Particularly the "rent your houses to NPCs" seems like an awesome idea, as it gives you an incentive to build and embellish more than one house.

Yep, that all sounds incredibly awesome to me. I don't care for the current progression system of "sectors", but the new method of sectioning off higher tier planets with tech (but having it all in one huge procedural galaxy) is exactly what I had hoped for. Sounds like the right direction to me.

I think one of my biggest problems is how systematic progressions (obviously, as it's a temporary solution for a beta). In the real game I'm hoping vertical progression is more fuzzy, with each step requiring unique solutions (seems like it's going that way, what with dealing with different planet hazards).

Let's hope they dont do the "pixel for everything" like previously said.

Two things:

#1: Another update soon...

http://playstarbound.com/nother-update-new-unstable-branch-on-steam/

So there will be a new update coming down the pipe soon, and there’s a couple of bits here that need explaining.

We’re changing the way we do releases slightly. There will be a new “unstable” branch which you can select on steam, which will receive updates sooner than the regular branch that you get when you install starbound. Anybody who is interested in helping us test the releases is encouraged to try it out, but please please note that unstable may destroy your saves and be generally, well, unstable. Yes, we know this is a testing branch for our beta, which is also for testing, but we’re trying to keep the big ugly data destroying bugs to a minimum so we figure this will help. We put some tests in your tests so you can test while you… anyway,

The next thing that needs mentioning… update sizes! It seems every time there is a starbound update it’s 500 – 700 MB, regardless of how tiny it is. This is due to two things:, One, our windows binaries had full debugging information because for silly reasons that don’t matter much that was the only way we could get stacktraces crashes. Well, not anymore! Windows binaries are now built at debug level 1 (as opposed to 2) which means that instead of starbound.exe being 450MB it’s more like 30MB. So there’s that.

The OTHER thing that was causing large updates was our pak file system. Whenever we updated pak files, we tended to completely rebuild the pak file with just a file or two changed, which was enough to make the steam binary diff system go bonkers and just basically re-download the whole file again. This is also fixed! We now add to the pak file in place, so minimal changes occur (and at the end of the file) that make steam deltas very small. This is important as we want to start doing more frequent content updates (as we’ve mentioned).

That’s the good news, the BAD news is that in order to make this happen, you’re going to have to download the entire pak file again, so the first update will kinda suck (pak file format change). But, it should get better after that. To all those that have bandwidth caps, I’m very sorry :(

The update should include several bugfixes and updates to heck, the treasure horde, and the skyrails system at least, probably post a full changelog later. The update will hit ‘unstable’ tonight, and probably ‘stable’ tomorrow depending on how things go.

The server will stick with stable releases unless we have a majority vote. Personally, I'd rather update with the unstable releases, but I'm going to hold off on that unless we're all in agreement for it.

#2 Server will probably be down for a couple of days, starting on Friday.

I am actually moving, so I actually need to shut this computer down for a while. Not exactly sure when I'll be able to get internet back up at the new place, but I'll keep you guys posted.

Server is officially offline, and shall be back up on the 5th.

Wish I could get the internet set up faster, but that's the earliest available I could make an appointment. *sigh*

I've been hosting a server for my bother and I to play on using Hamachi. Everything works fine as long as I completely disable my firewall (I have McAfee). Anyone know how to make it so that I don't have to do this? I'd rather not have my firewall disabled all the time.

You shouldn't have to disable your firewall OR use Hamachi as long as you forward the port the game uses. I don't remember what port it is, but (AND THIS IS SOMETHING I THINK HARDLY ANY GAME DOES, so kudos to Starbound) the game will tell you what the port is if it fails to connect.

Yeah we both have the ports forwarded (21025, 21026, 21027) and have both tried hosting the server (without using Hamachi). We tried for hours following every guide we could find and we couldn't connect. So Hamachi it has to be. I was just wondering if anyone who has McAfee is having the same problem.

edit: Figured it out. Can play with firewall on now.

For other people's benefit, what was the problem?

Open Mcafee and go to Navigation > Traffic Monitor > Active Programs > Hamachi Client Tunneling Engine. Look and see which ports are being used here and open them in the Mcafee firewall.

Hey guys, I should be getting the Internet installed today, so server should be up and running later.

NOTE: Since I am now at a new location, the IP address for the server will definitely have changed. I'll have the info when I can.

NOTE 2: Got even faster Internet than before, hoping you guys get a small performance boost.

Good news!
I might start to play the game again now!
