GOG News and Updates 2014

I've been looking for Mafia digitally as well. I want to say it was pulled due to licensing issues but I might be confusing it with another game.

I want to play IWD, but i can't find a resolution that looks good and not make everything small at the same time. It kills my eyes.

Nice deals today on GOG. Aside from the free Dungeon Keeper, I've bought Dungeon Keeper 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Trine and System Shock 2 for less than 15$. The Baldur's Gate game I already owned in physical format, but I've never played any of the other games.

Depends on your monitor size I guess. 1280x800 is the sweet spot for a ~24" screen. Might be able to go higher if you have a 30". Or maybe 960x600 if the 1280x800 is too high.

Been wanting to play DayZ. Would getting Arma 2 (on sale for $5 at gog.com) and the mod be worth it, or should I just pony up for the full price of the stand alone?

The mod for sure. The alpha is very very very very very very rough still. It's really nothing in comparison to the mod.

Only 1 recent addition this round, and a couple way older entries (half of which carry warnings), though I still have to hunt around a bit more on the later 2014 Week 7 releases.

Kentucky Route Zero has some pretty heavy recommendations from people who played it. Played it being perhaps the point to address, as it's not really a game so much, as an experience, but one that resonates very well with most people. So definitely worth checking out, though it's still got 3 more episodes to release before the game is completed.

Jagged Alliance 2 is perhaps the most renown of the bunch (or perhaps 'uncontested' is a better choice of words, Descent is probably better known), king of the genre, etc... so don't need to spend much time recapping that one (though if you haven't played it a second time with the v1.13 mod, then why not?). Giants: Citizen Kabuto, well it was remembered fondly for bringing laughs and looking colorful. The gameplay was a little hit or miss for people, I enjoyed jet-packing around the levels, but it does have its flaws. Still, a pretty unique game worth a look.

Then Descent 1 & 2, holding up nicely, still pretty popular here from reading recent impressions. The go to game for that feeling of nausea, delivering plenty of enjoyment if you can get the controls mapped properly (and you should be able to, since the games let you customize everything). DDX-Rebirth comes highly regarded too, for helping modernize the graphics a little, sorta like zDoom, etc.

Sacrifice was probably the toughest to keep on the list, impressions are a bit few and far between on top of being older, but I'm going to go with the unique gaming experience, blending genres and gameplay not unlike Giants, while also well being very much unlike it.

So it looks like the store page for Dungeon Keeper has been pulled. Must be why they've been giving it away.

I think they are trying something new so users can't stock up on gift keys. If you own the game then they give you one gift key to give away.

I don't think so, they linked to the page in the announcement of the giveaway, that link now just redirects to the GoG homepage. They also set it up so you couldn't get multiple keys in past giveaways without pulling the entire thing from the store.

The page is back up.

Sacrifice was a trickier game to search for quotes, only a couple dedicated threads (mostly from 8+ years ago), then lots of hits under other games with the word sacrifice and the usual random posts in various sale/GOG/Steam threads. If I do come across really inspiring/unique (or just a new LTTP thread comes up) quotes while down the road for games already done, I'm not opposed to updating them to be better. :)

NEW RELEASE

Doomdark's Revenge,

a bigger, more complex sequel to the unique classic mash-up of RPG, strategy, and interactive fiction, faithfully recreated for modern systems, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99

For Doomdark's Revenge, you can basically look at everything I said about Lords of Midnight and then append "But more so". Another great game, although perhaps a little too similar to the first. Much larger, though.

I have a feeling that we'll be seeing Killer is Dead on GOG. It was announced for PC today, with Deep Silver/Rising Star Games as the publisher. Deadly Premonition was in the same position, and it made it over, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing happen here.

If this is the case, then looks like I'll be rebuying it on GOG (personally, one of my favorite games last year)

Yeah, I never actually got around to buying the thing, because I was waiting for someone to compare the 360 and PS3 version and figure out which was the best version. Guess I have the answer now.

But anyway, I'd be surprised if this wasn't on GOG. The site really needs more Japanese games, anyway.

I'm only getting the Steam version so I can compare my achievements against the global average and my friends. In a sandbox game like Banished I figured the achievements would be a great replacement for a campaign mode.

So...how sim-like are those games, ranging from ArmA to Modern Warfare?

I've only played the first one (on Xbox), but it's a fairly challenging tactical strategy game and quite unforgiving in places. I'd definitely have it at the more sim-like end of the scale. Also, the game can be played on 'authentic' difficulty, which removes most of the on-screen markers and generally makes everything rock hard. I believe the game's claim to fame at the time was that Authentic Mode was developed as a training simulator for the US Military.

Yeah, it's not an FPS. Lots of people seem to get caught out by that, actually, I remember some disappointment when some people at work bought the Xbox version!

I'm never quite sure where the cutoff is regarded for 'oldies' when we get into the 2000's, but I'll call these oldies:

Full Spectrum Warrior: $9.99, currently discounted to $3.99
Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers: $9.99, currently discounted to $3.99

There's also a current promo: Both for $5.98.

All over this. I had a fun time with the first one back in college, but couldn't find another copy without a hassle in the last few years.

They're pretty interesting tactical games. Not so much strategy like xcom, more like squad placement, decision, and timing if I recall correctly.

Anyone hving trouble downloading from gog?

I'm dling the last batch of games I've bought and Rise of the Triad artworks aren't dling for me. It keeps freezing a few seconds later.

It deserves to be on that list - in what other game can you choose to worship a god that's actually a balloon connected to a helium-cylinder with a painted on smiley?
I miss Shiny.

Seems fine for me. Are you downloading through the browser or downloader?

GOG has three "big preorders" coming soon. - two RPGs and one strategy game. Not sure what they could be.

The point of contention is going to be this part:

If you've been a member of the site for a long time, you may recall that when we launched sales of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, we had to add in regional pricing. The game cost different amounts in in the US, the UK, the European Union, and Australia. We're doing something like that once again in order to bring you new titles from fantastic bigger studios. Since we don't accept currencies other than USD on GOG.com right now, we'll be charging the equivalent of the local price in USD for these titles. We wish that we could offer these games at flat prices everywhere in the world, but the decision on pricing is always in our partners' hands, and regional pricing is becoming the standard around the globe. We're doing this because we believe that there's no better way to accomplish our overall goals for DRM-Free gaming and GOG.com. We need more games, devs, and publishers on board to make DRM-Free gaming something that's standard for all of the gaming world!

I'm not too alarmed as this seems to be the tradeoff for selling some new games. Still, I'm curious what others think about this.

Some combination of:
(Pillars of Eternity/Wasteland 2/Divinity: Original Sin) and (Planetary Annihilation/Satellite Reign), I suspect.

For The Witcher 2 it worked out that the 'free game' worked out as being worth more than the gap between the prices; that alleviated it significantly, and they're doing the same again here.
