Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

I'm not really going to defend the "pushiness" of TW101 fans but I think in due part the large enthusiasm about the game, mostly stemming from this board since it's hard to find any other places invested in it, is how it combines a certain number of niches that this board loves yet failed to kick off because they were too focused on those specific niches. For one it's a Platinum developed title, for two it's Kamiya-directed which means a higher level of content and polish, for three it's a Wii U game that has a good hardcore appeal and finally it's built with a concept and new franchise that Nintendo can call it's own, which is exciting in it's own right. It was even built originally with Nintendo characters in mind before the change happened, and in ditching that they got recognizable personalities because of it.

I'm not going to claim the game is for everyone either cause it isn't, but for someone who can put in time to let it click it truly respects it's audience. The only real thing I will defend is their right to be in Smash Bros., since J-Tier put it already, the characters are really suited for it. And as an aside, short of including new mascots from eShop games there's really little modern inclusions for them to pick from the way I see it. But I've really expressed that opinion a ton of times enough.

Pikachu is all about speed, Sonic is a semi-casual runner. Makes sense.

Pretty funny how they're right beneath one another.

So this is pretty old leak about Ness render on the website, but I think it's real since this render haven't been seen elsewhere, and it fits Smash 4 perfectly.

If it's real I'd be ok with it. He looks pretty decent, but I've always wanted them to make him look more like the clay models in the earthbound official art though

It's a fairly easy photoshop. That, and it's a "website leak" which are the most unlikely. There are millions of people on the internet and anything uploaded leaves trails. You can't just upload an image like that without anyone knowing. Dude even had to block out the url.

It's definitely fake. There's a high res version where the tip of the bat looks crudely cut out. It's just a reposed Brawl model edited in Photoshop.

It's still looks better than Brawl model, if it's fake then we can expect him to look better than that.

I added Diddy and moved a few characters around. I'm on the fence regarding Takamaru, but he'll probably be back in the next update. I'm too indecisive.

The current allotment is five post-Brawl/Wii era newcomers, five older newcomers, and two guests. Brawl's newcomer roster was similarly divided between old and new, so I'm trying to keep a balance there.

Here is a color-coded breakdown.

I love how bloody enormous those Palutena shots were btw.

I was gonna say they're probably fake, then I clicked them and I was like..

"WHAT FAKE IS THIS HUGE"

My experience with pixels tell me that the text and emblem is aligned too low compared to other Japanese character entries.

Fake.

Wonder Red could be a cool addition. Though you probably would have to scale down the Unite weapons. They could make him somewhat of a stand character with some other member appearing momentarily and attacking depending on the move. It might be more work than making a regular character though. I guess, just like every other character, it basically just depends on whether or not Sakurai and other relevant people want to put him in the game as a fighter. I'd be happy if he was in, but I won't really complain if he's not.

Never doubt the power of the art skills fans have...palutena withstanding.

Calling fake.

Pretty much this. It's a nice model but it feels off imo.

If Sakurai started revealing one character per week, we would hit 48 characters at the end of August.

On a related note, I almost never want to stop anticipating this game. It will be bittersweet in a way once it's in my hands and I've discovered all it's secrets. I like feeling as though there's at least one more character I don't know about, one last hidden stage, etc.

2 characters a month seems about right. If this game releases in November, that means we could be looking 18 reveals give or take.

That's just if the trend continues though, we might get one character in one month or E3 rolls around with a few reveals. Hell, we don't even know when the game will come out, it could be earlier.

But if the trend continues unbroken, that could be 36-42 reveals before the game comes out. Along with secret characters that could be in the game.

I feel that's most likely, with another three newcomers at E3.

I think they'll show Mii, Pac-Man, and Mewtwo at E3 but mostly focus on the game's mechanics and features, while also revealing an early-ish September release date.

Man, just reading all these names together gets me hyped. Smash has an incredible roster.

I can't help but feel I'm going to be disappointed by the newcomers in this game.

Mega Man and Rosalina are both cool, but Villager, WFT and Mac I don't really care for, then Pacman and Mii I outright dislike and I hope they don't make it in. Beyond that Dixie and Palutena seem pretty likely, I dislike Kongs in general so there's another character I don't like, Palutena though is pretty cool. I feel that's about the amount of newcomers we can expect to see, so 3/9 that I like.

I just want Wonder Red or Shulk :(

Wonder Red could have a cool moveset but I don't see him getting in. Wonderful 101 is too new and not popular enough to be considered, sadly. An assist trophy is way more likely.

If any vet's a given to remain a secret character, it's Mewtwo.

That meant 14 reveals give or take if release date is Sept. Not bad numbers

Currently replaying skyward sword. Semi decent game, but I really enjoy the art style. Was there any confirmation on why link and zelda don't take after their skyward sword designs? Is it because ganondorf wouldn't fit with them, or is there another reason?

Well TP Zelda's design is a better fit for a fighting princess. As for Link, probably just down to Sakurai preferring the design if anything.

SS Zelda seems too fail looking to be a fighter.

Because Brown Haired Zelda is always better than Blonde Zelda, with Toon Zelda as an exception.

Toon > 3D Brown > 3D Blonde

Melee didn't have a brun Zelda yet.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it (Sheik too), but also:
  • Skyward Sword Zelda is one of the Zeldas least suited for battle in the history of the series. Seeing her use all of the Brawl attacks wouldn't really be in-character.
  • Skyward Sword Link is right-handed, doesn't use a boomerang, and would probably need the Skyward Strike. It's not worth changing the character up so much to represent such a comparably forgettable Zelda game.

I still think having every Zelda character have their design influenced by one game (but still changed enough so they all gel with each other) would've been neat.

TP Link, WW Link, OoT Ganondorf and Skyward Sword Zelda, all slightly redesigned so they don't look too out of place against each other. Made more sense to have them all stem from one game I guess (besides TL, obviously).

Those points do make a lot of sense, especially the zelda one. I almost wish that they did change link up so much though. They could keep toon link in with the classic link moveset, and then work in SS link with a heavily SS influenced moveset. That would never happen, but it's fun to dream :'(

The boomerang isn't an issue. OoT Adult Link used a Boomerang in both the original Smash and Melee even though he couldn't in OoT. Also, TP Link doesn't have the wolf, so Skyward Sword Link could easily lack a Skyward Strike. You might have a point about the right handed problem though, but I don't think mirroring Link's animations would be hard. Zelda likely was the biggest problem, and dragged the other characters with her.

Still, there's also how the tech demo switched back to TP art, which might indicate the direction of the series here, and Sakurai might have known about it while choosing the cast for this game.
