Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Seriously of people spouting off this garbage and then not bothering to justify it.

If you think one or more characters are more likely to be cut, then dammit have the balls to give a legitimate explanation for said cuts. Sakurai hates to get rid of characters and even went as far as apologizing beforehand JUST INCASE for the development of Sm4sh, so the least you could would be to come up with a well thought out reasoning behind your claims.

(Btw: Bassforever, I am in no way trying to single you out, I just get tired of seeing posts like this.)

I've made me explanations before and I'll say them again

Lets look at who's left from Brawl that isn't confirmed in Smash 4 yet

Wario
Meta Knight
Snake
Mr G&W
Yoshi
Lucas
Ike
Pokemon Trainer
Captain Falcon
Ganondorf
Jigglypuff
Ice Climbers
Rob
Shiek
Wolf
Falco
Zero suit samus
Ness

Now lets look at Melee to brawl charcters who were cut

Dr Mario
Young Link
Pichu
Roy
Mewtwo

From melee to brawl 4 of the 6 clone characters were cut, the two who remained had their move set diversified to be less of a clone though their routes as a clone still remain. Mewtwo was the only unique character cut and Lucario more or less took that role in most peoples eyes.

Now lets again look at who's not been announced so far I can think of no reason that the following characters would be cut

Wario- we already have a warioware assist trophy confirmed in Ashley and Wario is a unique and relevant character, he's staying

Meta Knight- We know the franchise is returning and Meta Knight is still relevant and unique, he's staying

Jigglypuff- Been in every smash bros game up till this point and can't see a reason why she'd be cut now

Ganondorf- Still the main villain of his franchise and still fairly relevant even if its as ganon, he's staying

Mr G&W- always been a hidden character, still unique and relevant to Nintendo's history

Rob- similar to g&w that he is still relevant to nintendo's history and is a unique character

Captain Falcon- been in every smash game and has a unique moveset and represents a unique series, he's staying

Falco- If he didn't get cut from melee to brawl I doubt he'll be cut here

Ness- he's been in every smash game, has a unique moveset and represents a unique series, he's staying

Zero suit samus- we've already seen samus's final smash is the same, so her armor will still probably fall off into zss, really don't see why they'd remove that

Now this next set is characters that are most likely returning but at least we can entertain some notion of them being cut

Yoshi- Yoshi will be in smash bros 4, but I will entertain the idea of him being replaced by yarn yoshi. More likely Yoshi will be revealed when new island comes out next week with some "wonder why we waited so long to show him lol" comment

Ice Climbers- Only because of the 3ds version, rosalina & luma + pikmim & olimar are very similar so its a weak argument though still possible

Pokemon trainer- if only because he's 3 move sets of gen 1 pokemon, he'll probably return though he may have a different look/different pokemon

Shiek- Perhaps she'll be replaced by impa and zelda will get a new down b (the armor knight summon) though I don't see her changing after two games the same way

Now we get to the characters who I think have a decent chance of being cut/replaced. I debated putting shiek down here but I honestly expect she'll be back as Zelda's down b as normal

Wolf- we already have fox and falco and the starfox franchise is even less relevant now then it was when Brawl came out. I like Wolf, he's a cool character and plays differently from Fox/Falco to justify his existence, but if someone has to be cut odds are a space animal is going and Falco has more tenure compared to Wolf both in his franchise and in Smash.

Ike- I like Ike a lot, he's really unique and popular in the US... But Chrom is more relevant to Fire Emblem and was in the most successful FE game not just in Japan but worldwide. I can see Chrom taking Ike's moveset and calling it a day, ideally I'd rather have all 3 and I think FE is big enough to warrant all 3 but again if I had to cut someone it'd be Ike in a similar way that Mewtwo was cut from melee

Lucas- Again I like Lucas, but he was partially an advertisement for Mother 3 which came out while Brawl was in development. Mother is niche franchise that deserves a spot in Smash but probably only needs one rep like F-Zero. Lucas is a clone and Ness is a seasoned vet, if someones getting cut between the two it's Lucas.

Snake- this is the easiest, Konami and Nintendo may not be able to work out a deal or come to an agreement on snake returning even if Kojima/Sakurai wants it to happen. I've suggested an Advanced wars character taking over the moveset and stick by that.

Personally if I could cut any 4 characters I'd cut wario, yoshi, shiek, and pokemon trainer because I don't enjoy playing as them, I like all 4 characters I think will be cut (before Toon Link's reveal I thought he'd be cut fwiw). I don't want anyone to be cut but if you have to make me pick 4 its those 4

What's all this about cuts and an actual final roster number now? 48 characters puts this game in the range I was most optimistic for (yay) but the idea that there can be cuts (4 at that) from Brawl's established characters just makes me scratch my head.

You people suggesting any of the spacies, Lucas, Ike, Snake, Pokemon Trainer or Ice Climbers are all Grinches.

everything about Roy sucks
his personality is nonexistent, his game sucks, and he sucks as a unit
no thanks
Ike>>>>>>Roy, he gets 2.5 out of the above 3 points

Roy hype seems to be sustained simply because he was a character in Smash before. Roy as a character is such a blank that I always wonder about people who mention him coming back for more than "he was in Melee" or "lol fire properties on sword".

Ike is like Western Marth. He's popular as fuck and could be seen as a/the "face" for the series over here. It also helped that the Radiance games were fun as shit.
Sakurai needs to replace either Eruption or Quick Draw with his grounded sword slash/wave projectile already.

Trading him for Roy would be a massive downgrade.

Those are all super unique characters :P Odd choices for potentially expected cuts!

There are a number of characters in Brawl who I find 'bland' from a character PoV, but all the movesets were unique enough (except for Link/Toon Link) so I'm not really sure what I'd expect for cuts.

I know! but this is hard and it's always the cool difficult characters that get cut.
:/

Who knows this is Samurai :v anything can happen.

I don't even think the Japanese like Roy that much. Ike scores consistently high in japanese FE character polls, even after Awakening was released.

Actually, I'd love to see what a list of the most popular FE characters in Japan would look like. Are there any lists, polls or rankings of characters for the series as a whole?

Ike is even more popular in Japan. He was popular enough to warrant a special DLC character in Awakening with his "descendant".

Well that's reassuring. :D

Ike was great and as much as I didn't really use him in Brawl (I like my swords people with more flair/finesse/ANIMAY it seems :P), I'd totally love to see him tenured.

I would love to see the top FE list of Japan.

About Awakening... WHATT?? which descendant?

The final DLC character is Priam, who claims to be Ike's descendant. He even carries an old, decrepit Ragnell.

I have to buy the DLC's one of these days..
He looks like a.. rebel Ike lol

Alleged descendant BTW. There is no concrete proof.

And descendants in FE are a bit if a tricky thing, it's not always the whole story.

Well it's the magic of the series

"What if...." kinda scenario

I coulda sworn I heard Sakurai said Smash4 would have a smaller roster than Brawl. Am I drunk? also, if Ganandorf comes back (probably will) I hope he has a new moveset, or drastically different than just a slow Falcon. Samurai Ganon plz

The quote got put through the longest game of Telephone ever. Sakurai stated that characters would be "diminished" without specifying anything regarding a roster count. This was in context with how they'd translate between the console and 3DS versions of Smash.

Pig Ganon!
Give the dark king some swords and magic ! that would be really cool!

Is it weird that the only reasons I don't want to see Ganondorf get a sword are because he wouldn't get crazy hyper offensive magic (I just realized Ganondorf would be the best character for the Black Mage character mold I spoke about a few pages ago), and that he wouldn't be awesome Windwaker dual sword Ganondorf?

So the latest fake rumor is that four characters have been cut, huh? Well, even the rumor itself is clearly false, if I HAD to cut four... I guess I'd choose Snake, Ike, Wolf, and Lucas.

Pretty sure you're drunk, haha. If he had outright said that, there would have been absolute chaos and bedlam. He hasn't confirmed the size of Smash 4's roster either way, but he has mentioned that at some point you've got to prioritize balance over sheer size (and I agree). Personally I'm thinking that because Brawl's roster was already pretty enormous (35 characters, 39 with transformations), if Smash 4's roster IS bigger it won't be by much. I think people expecting 50+ characters are setting themselves up for major disappointment... I'm thinking somewhere between 39-45 (not including transformations).

Who need a sword. Let him dual wields trident for lolz.

Smash is still in development right?

So what are the odds of someone like Wonder-Red being in the game. It wouldn't be too late for Nintendo to include him, or would that be unlikely because of the roster already being considered prior to Wonderful 101's release.

I've been taking a somewhat blind approach towards Smash 4 info, so outside of a few screenshots here and there, I have no idea on the current roster or if the game is in post production or even still in the development stages.

I thought Brawl's roster was 35 total (39 with transformations)? I agree with the idea that I don't see 50 or more happening even if the development is seemingly more consistent this go around. 48 is enough to get the most vied for folks in and make SSB4 the best roster thus far, especially given how nice the confirmed newcomers have been.

Not sure what makes this rumor any different to the ones that get made every other day, but just for shits and giggles:

Snake - Absolutely adored this character being in Brawl and would be legit pissed if he gets cut, but I could see Nintendo's current third party situation and Sakurai wanting an emphasis on more 'relevant' guest characters, even if I think it's sort of bullshit after how much fun he was in the last game.

Falco - Wolf already has an original moveset and is an antagonist, regardless of how he always gets brought up first in regards to cut discussions. Falco was one of my mains in Melee, but if one of the three SF cast members has to go, it should be the one who's most blatantly a clone.

Lucas - I like that the two different halves of the Mother/Earthbound series were represented in Brawl (Earthbound is kinda sorta a reimagining of Mother 1/Earthbound Zero, even if officially it's a sequel), but it didn't seem like they had much in the way of ideas of differentiating Ness from Lucas. Plus with the series being officially over since 2006 (unless Itoi says otherwise), it might seem a bit weird having the three-game series have two reps in Smash.

Pokemon Trainer
- Love the idea behind the character, but to be brutally honest did most people actually use them all that much? Outside of Project M the always felt horribly gimped to me. Not saying they can't dramatically improve how they work in SSB4, but if they hypothetically had to cut characters this would be a quick way to lessen the amount of design work.

Like other people in this thread, I hope this rumor's either bullshit and nobody's cut, or at least these mystery four get back in somehow as DLC.

To clarifying my point, when I said that I do believe that we could have more than 48 characters. I meant with those transformation characters being counted as well; such as sheik, zero suit samus, squirrel, ivysaur and charizard.

However, my expectation are going to stay at 45 until I have a good feeling about the roster in the future.

Honestly, if Sakurai did add an manga/anime character it would either be Hamtaro since that's one of the few anime licenses Nintendo has made games for or a really classic character like Doraemon.

For every Smash game, Sakurai has had the roster locked in before development began for the most part (the clones and Sonic being late additions to Melee and Brawl respectively).

Playable characters take a lot of work and deciding to add any in the middle of development can cause all sorts of problems (the addition of Sonic forced them to delay Brawl).

At the very least, that RosalinaX dude has so many posts, and seems to be well-known among that forum, so at least they're not hiding behind the veil of an anonymous 4ch post or newly created GameFaqs account.

I think they do have a source working on MK8, however I would bet that the Smash Information is just hearsay, and probably not concrete, but they left enough breathing room they can easily explain a difference as "it was changed in development".

Miiverse was such an awful idea. If only there was an age restriction so it could be more like the Nsider forums and less like a reminder that the Idiocracy is fast approaching.

I actually have fun with Miiverse, don't really see why you have to look at it like that. Sakurai himself gets way more dumb posts since there's more quantity naturally, and I don't really think it's Idiocracy that kids are posting typical kid-type stuff, but I like posting goofy sketches or a screenshot and getting likes.

you know, wouldn't Pokemon trainer going bye bye count as 3 cuts?
PT+Snake seems a lot more plausible then Snake+3 other separate characters
but w/e we'll see if it's legit

Not if they cut him and keep Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard in the game, giving a slot for each of them. Sadly, that has zero chance of happening.
