td;dr: no one knew officially who Sakamoto was, and everybody assumed it was a pseudonym to preserve Bitcoin's creator identity (for obvious reasons). Turns out it's a "random" guy named Sakamoto. He has an estimated $400 (edit: million) fortune in Bitcoins.

Poor guy, whether this is true or not, his life is over. I sure hope he and his family can survive this relatively untouched.

That's a really interesting, but fantastically, fantastically irresponsible one.

What the hell are Newsweek thinking publishing a photo of the house of a man who quite possibly has a huge amount of Bitcoin stashed away?

I don't get this, why is his life over and why is it a bad thing to post his picture?
There is richer people than him that have been photographed.
 
I guess if he was that easy to find then we know the US gov isn't going to do anything to him since they seemingly haven't yet.

Well, considering there are only $16 million in buy orders on the highest volume exchange (at which the price would completely collapse to basically 0, its not actually possible to cash out that volume of bitcoins, so these estimates are all moot.

Posting his picture might not be that bad but they posted the address of his house, and a picture of his house looks like. You don't know if some nut who reads this article goes to sakamoto's house to try and still the millions of his bitcoins.
 
I am surprised they published in this way, ok if the guy didn't want to talk about bitcoin but they could've arranged a proper meeting with witnesses & had him pix-elated out & voice changed so he could remain anonymous.

Seems he was taken advantage of ambushed even.
 
If he's as obsessed about privacy as the article suggests, Newsweek publishing this may well cause him to up and move somewhere else. And possibly change his name again.
 
I felt that article went too far; it seemed that the author was stalking him and his family. Even how they started interacting was suspect.
 
Amazing article. Was about to post a thread myself when I found this. I feel for the guy if it really is him. Must really fear for his life.
 
Newsweek is out to destroy some dude's life...

The writer isn't even sure this is the guy who started bitcoin. I think it is unethical for this article to be put out.
 
Wow horrible article. Ruined a guy's privacy for an article on a guy who might be the creator of bitcoin, but probably isn't.
 
Leah McGrath Goodman has just single handedly put a hit out on a guy who looks like he doesn't have the backing to cover $400MM in assets by writing this article...

Also want to mention, she's not a great journalist. Has newsweek ever been a good magazine for news, or are these stories just super exaggerated?

The Satoshi Nakamoto that published the bitcoin paper had impeccable, eloquent English. He also encrypted every single message he posted. Why would he use his real name?

Maybe its true, but it doesn't really add up.

His wife and other family members confirm that he used different writing styles depending on his audience.

What an interesting character. I do think it's irresponsible of the author to "out" him this way, but I see it as a power play meant to force Nakamoto's hand.
 
This whole article just screams unprofessionalism. Ambushing someones house for an interview, using public look up services to find his information, posting pictures of his house and car and harassing him after being told he wont talk about bitcoin by both him and his family. This is grade A scummy "journalism".
