Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

no items, Little Mac only, FD :lol
I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that he won't be high tier though (as in.....top 15)

Yeeesh, I don't like to talk about tier bullshit before the game getting release but I think he will be force to reckoning with.

This is a great update! Able to aim his side smash and the up, down and straight are vastly different? Who wouldn't like this?! Oh right, villains and knaves.

When Brawl came around I remember thinking the many of the original 12 felt really bare bones. It seems like that gap is just going to get bigger and bigger. Really thinking about it though, the really vanilla characters to me are Mario, Link, Jigglypuff, and Donkey Kong. But that's part of the charm of those characters to me, especially DK. If he got a roll attack I'd take him off the vanilla list so fast.

Indeed. I really hope that everyone would get something new or buff. There are so many new mechanism for Little Mac and Rosalina. So Goood!

Well, Mario got update with Fludd so I don't know how you would judge that. Also I want to remind you that those original 12 got a new move in Melee since Side B moves didn't exist until Melee.

actually change that to top 1/4 of the characters
don't worry Little Mac is far more likely to be good than Link or Ness combined at least

Thinking about Snake and Sonic in Brawl. Do you guys think Megaman will be a starter character? Or we need to play a few hours/matches to unlock him?

As good as Little Mac is, I don't think he can replace
Ness
. Not in my books. In the end, when you're playing with friends, it's about how you play with the character anyways. If you're talking tourney then you could be right. :P

What if you're playing with friends at a tourney? Universe collapses? ;)

I really hope that all third party characters would be starter characters this time. I would like to jump straight to Little Mac and Mega Man when I get the game. We'll see.

I don't really want to continue this. It has to do with theprodigy's posting history from before (especially in the Pokemon XY OTs).

I shouldn't have mentioned that, and was pretty rude of me.
Sorry. I appreciate honesty and I was legitimately curious to know the answer for my question.

Ness actually has air game, so he could probably put in some work against Little Mac.

Actually any air character can put in some work against him. Little Mac seems like one of those characters that will be technical and need some time put into him to master him.

Well, I don't think you have been rude or being annoying toward to the people, so you should be fine; at least, in Smash Threads so people have no reason to ignore you at all. Hopefully it would be any help to you if you want to know the answer.

Niiice. Mac is looking great.. iirc, you could already slightly tilt up and down on forward smashes for some characters like Samus but for Mac the impact and change looks more important. I like this.

Some of the unlocks in Brawl were so easy, you wonder why they even bothered. What's the point of unlocking a character after 5 rounds of vs? That's like 10 minutes...

Also Little Mac isn't third party

Really? I feel that I am bit passive aggressive towards people some times, mainly when the subject is competitive Smash or "Melee is better than Brawl" bs.

Anyway, yes it helped. I don't want to derail the thread more, so lets go back to the main topic.

On the subject of Mega Man being a starter or unlockable, I actually hope is unlockable. I really enjoy unlocking characters (as well as stages, musics, etc).

I feel the same way, but I think we're on opposite sides of the coin. We probably just cancel out. :)

Edit: I mean to say I feel like I'm passive aggressive sometimes, not necessarily agreeing that you are.

you're passive aggressive about that outside this thread

Well, Competitive Smash is very touchy sensitive topic for most of people, so I don't blame you for being aggressive about it.

Anyway, It's been awhile since I unlocked anything in Brawl. Is Green Hill Zone and Shadow Moses Island unlockable stages? I know that assist trophies and characters were unlockable for sure.

Ness has abysmal range though, so if he's kept the same then I doubt he'll have a leg up over Mac.

I don't recall seeing Little Mac's aerials, but if he has strong aerials, then he'll be tough to defeat in air to air matchups. (Like Olimar)

You're thinking of his off-stage potential.

Yeah this argument was always silly IMO because 64 > both of them,
COMBINED!

;]
Ha! Honestly, there are lot of stuff I prefer from the original game over the sequels.

Yes, that is the passive aggresiveness I was talking about :P I think I was pissed off by some shit I read on Smash Boards when I made this post you linked.

I have no idea. First thing I did on Brawl was finish the Subspace Emmisary and a lot of stuff is unlocked by finishing the said mode. SSE totally ruined unlocking stuff in Brawl for me.

Knowing the posting style of some of the users who discuss technical details and such stuff - I get why someone wouldn't want to join.

OT:
I hope we'll see more characters with similar systems. Three Side-Smashes for each character would be awesome.

Those were unlockable I think you had to battle with Snake 10 times or something to unlock it?

That would be nice if they did. I think all characters need something to make over to catch up with the gap with Smash 4 characters.

I honestly never understood why it was so touchy.. The common ground we should ALL be fighting for, UNITED, is more customization options to create the settings we wish to play. Why can't we have adjustable settings like gravity, speed, etc.?

Brawl could've been "saved" competitively if this were the case. Just some basic settings to customize our matches like we see in many other multiplayer games, like Halo for example.

It'd be cool if we got Diagonal Side Smashes for a few other characters as well, beyond just the Side Smash aiming that most characters can do if they have punches.

Also heeeeeeeeey a 3DS shot. You don't see those every day.

Well, We already got a 3DS shot like 3 days ago as well. Two 3DS shots this week is pretty awesome. I'm concerned that we mightn't see any 3DS screenshot next week.

It was the other way around. I can't remember Green Zone, but you started with Shadow Moses and could unlock Snake by playing there a few times.

Edit: Green Hill Zone was unlocked alongside Sonic.

It is "touchy" for me, because most of the time people are talking about competitive Smash, they are also belittling my favorite game in the series. I get that Brawl isn't very suitable for the competitive scene, but I don't get why some people think they need to shit on the game for that reason. Why not just go play Melee or Project Melee and leave vanilla Brawl and the people who like the game alone? There are plenty of other reasons to like Brawl (and even though Melee is better for competition, it seems that quite a few people play Brawl competitively). Although I don't see much people here in this thread belittling Brawl, that is something more noticeable on some other less civilized places on the internet (like tumblr, youtube, etc). Honestly, I am all for more customization options and I really hope SSB4 is a good game for the competitive crowd, but I also want it to be more or less similar to Brawl.

Have you missed Special Brawl? Lots of customization to be had. Even gravity. Outside of Special Brawl you still could adjust items, damage ratio, stages in random battles etc.

Customizing tournaments would be a problem anyways imo - you'd need all scenes to adhere to one standard. Probably pretty hard.

I understand your perspective, but I feel like you're not understanding their perspective (the people who build well-constructed arguments, not the dismissive trolls). Looking at a franchise like Halo, similar occurrences took place. Remember how huge Halo was for MLG? Well, when competitive Halo started decreasing from a gameplay perspective, much like Brawl for the Smash franchise, interest in the game as a whole lost some momentum as it fell out of the spotlight, allowing for another game to easily capitalize (CoD). Many people feel this happened with Smash because of Brawl's unnecessary exclusion of the depth found in previous games. That's not saying Brawl had no depth, but comparatively in a skill-based setting Brawl doesn't give that same feeling.

Hopefully this will all be behind us with the next Smash though. As long as the online systems work great and are on par with basic online games these days, I'll personally be set for the foreseeable future because despite Brawl's undesirable "feel" IMO, I'd still be playing that if it actually had a decent online infrastructure.

Not as difficult as you may think. After a short period, most competitive scenes tend to use similar rules to maintain uniformity and use what works best for the game on a highly competitive level.

But yeah, I never really messed around with Brawl mods other than Project M ;[

Apex ruleset has been in use for quite a while now

I personally played lots and lots of Brawl+. Too bad that never took off like ProjectM. I really don't like some of the new movesets in ProjectM. Brawl's characters were slaughtered ; (

Melee's bad characters got a buff. Brawl's cast feels like playing a completely different series. Horrible

Clean's already been posted by somebody else, so I'll just hijack their link:

Not like Shrek is getting in. Only two to get mixed up.

Shulk is a longshot, but there is no universe where Shrek has an inkling of a chance.

Did people really complain about today's? Getting detailed information about the moves of newcomers is really exciting to me. What's the problem people have with today's picture?
You tell me.

Totally meh.
...why do I keep staying up for these?

G'night guys.
Anyway, the picture is boring, but more 3DS shots is always a good thing to me.
Gonzo and Relia are kinda dependent on interpretation, but yeah.

Yeah, in terms of stocks, stages, time limits, etc. To my knowledge, competitive Smash has never really utilized the mechanics customization available. I've never heard of competitive Melee being played with damage ratio adjusted, or in lightning mode. I've never heard of anyone using special Brawl to play in high gravity mode seriously. Maybe we could argue that the games already play as well as the options allow. I'm sure people have tried it some, but it would be unprecedented for sure. I imagine it would be tough getting the whole community to agree. PM kinda indicates to me that it could be done, but still you have a group of developers that ultimately decide.

I know you're trolling, but let's get real here. We all know Shrek is getting in, whether we like it or not.

I guess I can understand some disappointment in today's without the text. I guess it was hard for me to sympathize, since I didn't ever experience the image only version.

Gonzo and Relia are kinda dependent on interpretation, but yeah.

Sometimes it's just because I don't translate Japanese comments, So they'll need to wait for like 3 mins to read English comments.

Just seeing Little Mac punch three times without explanation is kind of meh, considering information.

I do understand their perspective, actually. I certainly would be pissed or at least disappointed with the changes made in Brawl, if I was a Melee competitive player.

It is just hard to sympathize when the same people keep shitting on something you like.
Are there any Brawl mods that just gives alternate costumes?
I second this question.

Yeah true, and it doesn't help that many of them aren't well articulated with their arguments and collected while expressing their views ;\

Honestly, a lot of the Brawl cast got changed enough that they feel more "complete" now. This isn't some thinly veiled "lolSakurai" kind of observation either. A lot of changes seem to take the original ideas in really awesome new directions. Project M Pit is very easily my second favorite character in the context of platform fighters and could almost give based Marth a run for his money.

With that said, while I can understand the hang ups you might have, I'd really like to know what you mean by "playing another series" when playing the modified Brawl members in P:M. The casts' changes all look and feel like things the series could have either introduced themselves over time or things that were natural extensions of what they could do in vBrawl.

My question is whether any game after melee can attract a majority of the competitive playerbase. Sure, there's Project M, but that just takes brawl and pushes it in more of a Melee-speed focused direction. While Sakurai has mentioned he wanted to speed up this new smash as compared to brawl, it's clear he doesn't want to go back to the style of gameplay found in Melee. Taking out tripping and changing up the mechanics have all been positive signs, but does the greater community want anything that's not melee?

We won't know until the game comes out, but I'm hoping this game has a better chance due to some of the changes that have been implemented. I think Melee will always be played, but it's my hope that we can get a more unified base around the next game.
