Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

So, at least three kinds of island layout confirm?

What a neat little stage. I wonder if it's a true walkoff or if there's water between the edges and the blastbox - it looks like it could go either way from the pictures we have.

But... is it just me, or does the stage look really... low-poly? Maybe it's just the angles, but the scenery looks really awkward, like it was pulled from an early DS game or something.

Just how the competitive scene likes it.
It's amusing to think of it that way when the 3DS has shown... what, a grand total of one stage that looks like it could be tourney-legal? XP

Not sure about that DK pic because it is zoomed in too close. Could be one of layouts from tonight, just at a different angle nm. Cap'n is on the dock lol.

So doesn't this pretty much confirm that smashville randomly switches from City to town and possibly the same for the Punch out/Smash Boxing Ring?

I wonder how many other stages have multiple layouts? Ooooo.

It's not just you; only thing that's bugging me about the stage, but I guess you can only expect so much from the 3DS. Didn't Gerudo Valley look really close to the OOT3D version, though?

Still,. I'm diggin' the stage!

Woah, just woke up for MORE 3DS pictures? Thank you based Sakurai. There should me more 3DS shots weekly, like at least two per week.

Pic of the day. Here's a new stage for the 3DS version: Tortimer Island! I've been here countless times to catch bugs.

What a beautiful day. On this stage, fighters are randomly placed on a different island layout every time they visit. Yar, come back anytime, will ye?

oh thats awesome

Aww yeah was right on stage reveal. I mean, it's a stage we saw a piece of before, but now it's fully revealed.

Isn't this how Sakurai has revealed all the stages so far? He'll usually show off a snippet of them in an unrelated picture, and then formally introduce them later. Could be wrong, though.

It certainly does feel like it's been 'downgraded' compared to AC, especially the hut, but I suppose it's natural given the relative level of what's going on between the two games.

EDIT: The textures on the tubes are different/lower res, as on the hut itself. The water effect is worse, the ground texture is lighter, the bushes appear to be 2D sprites compared to AC. From the regular viewing distance, a lot of this will be unnoticiable, I imagine, though.

Something definitely looks a little off, but I'm not sure what. Aren't most stages in smash just taken from their original source game? In theory shouldn't most smash stages look exactly like their source game?

Yeah, he did that with the Mario Galaxy stage too.

I guess Kapp'n hangs out at the leftmost pier, off-screen in the shot.

I imagine he'll occasionally leave and go off-screen removing the platform.

The best thing about this stage reveal, is that it confirms New Leaf music for the game, well at least for the 3DS version. I wonder which tracks they've chosen to put in Smash...

All the songs of Kapp'n while he transports you to the island ;)

Pilotwings stage, SMG stage and AC New Leaf stage are now revealed.

Sakurai also teased Find Mii stage, WiiU KIU stage (dat Palutena statue) and a 3DS stage. Let's wait and see.

Yea let us all not forget about the palutena statue aswell as the viridi stage reveal after that leak, and we see that the smash god isnt a merciful one.

It sucks a bit I guess, but I'll take visual downgrades from the original if the 3DS version still manages a steady 60fps.

Really like the concept behind this stage though.

OMG.

THEY FINALLY REVEALED IT. IT IS AMAZING YES.

Some stages like Mario Galaxy and Find Mii follow this model, but others like Pyrosphere and the Reset Bomb stage were just announced without any hinting.

The stage is set out almost in the same way I drew up that concept a couple of months back.

Multiple layouts, huh? I'm digging this stage.

Yes, it does look a little off and much worse than the original source, but it looks fine, and it's likely for the best to maintain 60fps.

Dat (lack of) shading. This screen comparison makes me appreciate how far AC:NL has gone visually, and it's not even that visually impressive.

The stage looks okay zoomed out though as in the screen shots. It's likely to be the most common view distance too.

Any guesses on exactly what the different Island layout may be? Will the actual terrain change or will the island rotate and we fight on it's east side today and it's west side tomorrow with slightly different bumps and water levels?

This is really cool and gives it some neat novelty.

I've just been thinking, any chance of a switch for turning off stage hazards?
PS All Stars is almost universally hated, but this option was really good in it. I also don't think it was as bad as people say - it was no where near Smash standard, but it was decent and I had some fun at home with friends with it.

ShunxSato made a good point about how the 3DS stages seem to be giving off Smash 64 vibes as far as layout and how a lot of them are walk offs where the series assets are built in and not just a floating platform with series assets as the background and I am really digging that. That makes me especially excited for the handheld version because I always felt 64 stages were the best stages.

Sakurai already deconfirmed that notion while simultaneously insulting PSABR, so nope, no toggle but really, there are neutral stages for that. Without the hazards, the stages would be lacking character and a lot of hazards are part of the charm and even a part of the fan service.
