Oddworld: New n Tasty priced at $30 (250,000 sales for Exodus remake greenlight)

hrm..i never thought about that
scrolling screens is gonna change things quite a bit, no?
i guess this is isn't just a straight up recreation of the original screens and puzzles then?

Haven't played the original since the 90s, but I was trying to think back on how that would affect things. My first thought would be sleeping sligs. As I recall, you could only wake them up when you are on the same screen. I wonder how the scrolling screens affect that.

Exactly -- this means that there will be lots of changes to the puzzle design. If you played the original, you know that a large part of certain puzzles/enemies involved the screen transitions. The new style fundamentally changes the design.

It will be very interesting to see how the remake changes a ton of things.

yeah this actually makes me a LOT more excited
i was sort of under the assumption that this was a full on recreation of the first game with a real time engine
so, this is basically a new game with a retelling of the story from the first game

aka...a new side scrolling abe game! fuck

Since it's a complete remake i can understand the price.

I was led to believe that people who already owned the Oddbox would get this one for free. Is that still a thing?

Don't care. Buying it. Especially if it's funding an Exodus remake.

Buying it, day one, sight unseen. I need this in my life.

Is this getting a retail release?

yup
great price
really hope people arent ruined by "all downloadable games are supposed to be 5-15 dollars"
i think people's perception is less about digital download and more about some genre that perceived as lesser value, especially 2d or sidescroller game.

rayman and puppetteer are also mistakenly thought as cheaper games when they firat announced while 3d games with modest budget like tearaway and sly cooper 4 are never viewed like that, in fact people cheered when sony announce $40 Price for sly and theres a little backlash for puppetteer revealed as full Price title.

Did they redo all the assets and everything? $30 for a PS1 remaster seems way too much. Lorne Lanning is an ass, I say this as a long, long time Oddworld fan.

They need to make something new already.

"If this had a publisher, the price would be higher and they'd be calling in triple A."

Except it doesn't and it's not. I feel like there's a reason for that.

I guess we'll see, but for now LL kinda sounds like a car salesman here. I hope for his and the teams sake it's worth $30 'cause if it's not the internet is gonna rip JAW a new asshole.

And I strongly suspect it's only been this expensive because they don't really have a leash to deal with. Whatever they've done, I commend them for. But when this started? It was a remaster. No fucking way it should've cost $5m.

I've played the original. If this improves on that then it's really, really good. Well worth $30. I wouldn't even bat an eye at that for what I've seen of what they've done. It looks better than the cg intro on the original.

I dunno, $30 for a remake, of a game that's already had re-releases... I'd rather they spent that money on just making a new game.

Tough sell for $30.... not sure there's enough fans left to hit that number while double excuse me triple dipping.

If it reviews well I don't mind buying it. I loved the original. Still have the PS1 disc around here somewhere.

Didn't they switch engines from Uningine to Unity anyway? I'm not a developer so don't quote me on this, but isn't Unity development generally inexpensive?

In any case; I think a game like this would really benefit from a retail release at this price.

I've seen some screenshots not publicly seen, although not hugely spoilerific it looks incredible and some areas have definitely been improved that fans will feel incredibly nostalgic, (cant remember the names of the places, been a really long time since I played the original Abe games). The remake is incredibly true to the vision, just think this is how a "remaster" is to be done. I personally can't wait for it and they already have 2 definite sales from me and a friend for PS4.

Need that Exodus remake. The original was fantastic and from what I've seen the remake is shaping up beautifully - it's exactly as I'd imagined it. No issues with the price here, wouldn't mind them adding some new areas and mudokens to save though.

"hello"
"hello"
"Follow me"
"ok"
"30bucks"
"Nooooooooo"

Anyways, I like second game more, but will buy this for slightly discount price.

Higher than I expected, but probably a fair amount for what appears to be an excellent remake of one of my favorite PS1 games of all time.

The original is a great game, but there are going to be a lot of people who never heard of the original and don't know what the game is, and I don't think many will impulse buy a $30 download game. I do hope it manages to sell over 250k though, because I'd like to see that Exoddus remake.

What re-releases have there been prior to this?

You can get hella work done in Unity and bounce builds to multiple platforms that are officially supported.

I agree with you re: retail release as well. I almost feel like you need that sort of option for a console game. As posted on the previous page, $30 pulls it firmly out of insta-buy territory and hey, if he's gonna drop that AAA line, I'd like that confidence manifest in the profit model.

But it's Lorne Lanning and all publishers are part of a secret league of villainy so they're not going to release it at retail. We already know.

Oh, I'm sure it's going to be great. I love what I've seen it and it's clear they love it. But is it gonna be worth $30? I just feel like they're making a bet possibly biting off more than they can chew. But like I said, I commend their efforts wholeheartedly.

OP you missed out where he said Fangus Klot is likely to be the next game, YES! Gimme dat Stranger on Steroids.

Mhm. At the very least, it has a shot of hitting the 250K due to how many platforms the game's hitting. Steam will be it's savior. Cross-buy would be a HUGE plus for the game as well

PC numbers alone will fund it. I know I'm getting it day one.

My only advice to you, GAF...

Releasing for retail probably mean they need to sell more than 250.000 copies before they can make the next game.

I'm super pumped for this to come out, I'm stoked to hear Exxodus could get a remake, and I've got the biggest, raging brainer right now at the thought of an all new Oddworld game being created.

Shut up and take my $30.

Oh man. I really wanted to get this game, but I didn't enjoy the original all that much. I think I'll have to pass until a price drop happens or a PS+ discount is announced. :(

I love the oddworld series.....however not only is that to price way to high, but munch's oddysee on steam is fucking broken...to the point the game isn't playable....and they have yet to patch the shit.

if I didn't have this issue with the munch's oddysee game, like if they actually just released one patch so the game actually worked, I probably would have spent the 30 just cause I'm a fan...

and yea, I think 9.99 would have been "isnta-buy" for most people.

I remember how these little games started out being 4.99, then 9.99, then 14.99, now there's a company attempting that 30.

it's just way to high.

Considering it's Oddworld, and the work they put on it, i think it's ok for me. Picking up day 1.

Hopefully they make enough money to fund another one.

I will triple dip this thing. Dammit, I will buy 2 copies and give them to some friends.
Oddworld games NEED to make a comeback. They are some of the best and most underrated around. The pure idea of an Exodus remake puts me hard.

Hello
hello
pay me
ok

I lol'd so much at this

I wouldn't mind paying 29.99 for a retail copy, and 19.99 for a digital copy. If its 30 for the digital copy with no retail option, idk. We got alot of remakes last gen that were trilogy's for the same price... But if they'v actually remade this game from the ground up again, because it doesn't look like just a reskin, then maybe 30 is more acceptable.

To avoid confusion this is not a remaster this is not a HD remake, It's a full on remake using mostly new assets and a new game engine. This is not the ps1 abe game with a shitty filter thrown over it. Its a fully fledged made from the group up remake. 30 usd seems more than reasonable. I will take a creative Oddworld game any day over the general drivel that gets released on a weekly basis..

Lorne is that you?

Front-load the initial release at a relatively "high" retail price, then longtail it with the usual Steam / PS+ / Humble Bundle sales, etc...

They'll recoup.

Not when they sell other games that don't even work, for YEARS and refuse to fix them, but instead release a hd version of the same game that works on PS3.

More than I was expecting but it's one of my favourite games, I have been wanting a HD release of this for years (640x480 just doesn't cut it any more :P), so with that said +1.

edit: when is this out on PC?, the official date is TBA (seems like Sony have a timed exclusive), are we even expecting it this year?

I wouldn't exactly call it little, not only is it a full on remake, but the original game takes over 10 hours to beat even if you don't collect everything.

Longer than some $60 games.

I'll echo sentiments that $30 was more than what I was expecting ($20/$25), but I'll still be picking this up on day zero.
