#DarkSoulsDowngrade and #YOULIED \\ a.k.a You got some splainin' to do, Namco

Also, you keep repeating that the geometry is the same in the TGS and retail versions. It isn't. I already pointed this out to you.

This is from the OP. The TGS demo doesn't have the door that the retail game has:

The pillars in the salamander pit are COMPLETELY different between the TGS and the retail versions.

The salamander pit in the PC 2013 footage is much closer to the TGS version than the retail game.

Again, minor changes, nothing major there.
For example, the door is likely attributed to the animation and other necessities not being completed at that point in development. You would be surprised how difficult something like a door is to get correct. I actually listened to a lecture by Obsidian on the various mechanics; opening the door, going through the door, NPCs reacting to the various states correctly, etc.

Correction:

1) PC April 2013 vertical slice
2) TGS console / PC vertical slice
3) Retail version

We don't have footage from the console version from April 2013 so we can't say if the layout was the same or different from the PC footage.

hmm look at them 4 column pillars, so much geometry lost in the retail :(

Heard Giantbomb talking about this on their latest podcast.

What it's going to amount to:

Brad: "You see those crazy guys on neogaf STILL bitching about it?"

Patrick: "Yep."

I have no idea why you guys have any faith in the giant bomb guys over this. They've shown time and time again that once they make up their minds we might as well be screaming at a brick wall, regardless of how wrong they may be.

We seen this in Far Cry 3 and Watch Dogs as of late. The truth is that preview trailers are going to be more concept than actual execution. So I guess we have to wait until closer to release to see how the games will actually look. I really cannot stand the current state AAA gaming is in.

. So I guess we have to wait until closer to release to see how the games will actually look.

Problem is, we didn't get a "close to release" with this game. They shoved it out the door significantly downgraded in both mechanics and visuals from what they were just showing 6 weeks before the game launched. Hell, at least one boss fight is totally ruined without the lighting system, and that's just what I've encountered...

I'll leave you make up your own mind should you listen to it. I specifically chose not to say what they felt because surely the fact that a fairly large media outlet is at least talking about the issue is a good thing, right? No ostriches there at least? Some agree with it, others don't, but at least they aren't blindly ignoring it.

Their discussion wasn't entirely uninformed but they hadn't exactly read up on the facts either. They seemed to have missed that Namco are still using some of that footage in their promotional material, or at least were very recently.

That's very very probable. The door is locked in the game after all. Which means they 'had' to put the door there because of level/gameplay progression choices. The thicker wall with the bricks around it probably would have had to be changed due to clipping issues among other things.

I don't get the love for giantbomb, they're not so different from ign or gamespot.

I like Naomi from IGN (duh) and Kev from GameSpot's reviews. Oh and Danny, he's cool. And Cam. I like both their features they do. Reality check and I forgot the name of Danny's one.

The Lobby? I think Danny is a cool dude, same with the GB eeps. Doesn't mean I have to agree with how they feel about games.

I found out the name of it. It's called 'The Point.'
I think he used to do other ones too. I remember before he was even at GameSpot he was a regular user of the forums (same with Kevin V O). He used to do blog posts though so it was clear he was really into the industry.

Its predicated on my birthday, if it were my own money I would probably wait until I get some more information.

Eh, I found a preorder for £20. I will preorder virtually any PC game that seems interesting to me at that price to be fair - its how I ended up with Thief and Castlevania 2. AND I REGRET NOTHING.

Even if it's just a higher res/better performing console version, I'll be OK with it considering that's like half RRP.

If I were paying more though I'd probably wait. That being said, please let this version have the awesome lighting. PLEASE.

So what's the deal with the mirror knight and looking glass knight exactly?

He doesn't look shiney anymore. The area isn't lit with as much lightning flash effects and so shadows are less impressive too. Particle effects from the various abilities are also toned down or removed.

so that playstation access youtube account posted TGS video and was just dumb saying it was from the ps3 version right?

I think that's probably what happened. Both videos show identical graphical fidelity. The only thing is the guy who was commentating said that he played it and it looked like that on PS3. I don't know when he played it though, maybe he just played it during the TGS event.

that sucks. i was under the impression that was part of their January stuff. guess that's what i get for relying on fan youtubers blindly :/

The longer FROM / Bamco keep their cards to their chest the more I think the PC version will be stunning.

They know that as soon as they open their mouths ppl will stop buying the console versions

No. It could be a vertical slice, a separate demo polished specifically to show off the game.

The January build from PS Access is the same used in the TGS demos.

Besides, the rain doesn't look like it belongs to the scene; it almost feels superimposed as a foreground element. The lightning strikes in the background do not feel natural at all. Instead of adding a dramatic undertone to the fight it seems like someone is taking photos with flash.

And the hallway leading to that area also suffers from the same problem: Lightning strikes looking like camera flashes instead of powerful lightning bolts.

They pulled a bait and switch once so there's no guarantee they won't be doing the same thing for the PC version. They are relying on a passionate fanbase in order to land as many sales as possible.

Misleading reviews and out of control praise won't help the cause either. AFAIK, NeoGAF is the only place that's active and objectively informing the consumer.

Hopefully developers will take more notice in all these big issues of late with "Downgrading" and be a little more careful with what they show to the public...

You are exactly right.

Bandai is maximizing their revenue potential perfectly.

We've got a statement on MCV:

"Throughout the game development process, a game is constantly being balanced not only in game playability, but also in the realm of resource management,” From told MCV.

“A developer is always challenged with creating the most rewarding gaming experience while delivering continuity in graphical quality, gameplay dynamics, and balance within the game. The final version of Dark Souls II displays the culmination of this delicate balance and we’re very proud of the positive media and fan reception for the game.”

"Looks good enough for most people, haters gonna hate"

That's not even a response !!
It's one of those pre written answers that everyone uses when asked a question in order to dodge the actual issue, come on From !
