DirectX 12 GDC 2014 presentation: Low-Level Access, DX11 GPUs, Holiday 2015

MANTLE!

I mean DX12

Hopefully we are about to see a Renaissance of game development with all these pushes to make game programming cheaper and easier

Surely it being like Mantle is a good thing, given that Mantle doesn't work with Nvidia GPUs and this will? Or am I missing something?

Yeah. GPU Manufacturer agnostic, better CPU use. Not bad.

Just put up a very interesting thread-use chart comparing dx11 to dx12, shows an almost equal split of workload across cores in dx12 compared to about 2:1 ratio on dx11 where you had 2x the amount of any other core. Suspect someone will rehost the chart in a moment... Edit: There it is a few posts up

difference in mantle was smaller than AMD advertised at their presentation. I expect the same here with MS and directx12. No solid facts till someone has it to actually try on different harware

On d3d12, overall CPU utilization is down 50% compared to dcd11.

Someone provide me with an idea of the impact of this?

If a system was previously bottlenecked by less-capable CPU features/performance (mobile and current-gen consoles come to mind), this allows more efficient use of the same system resources.

Please don't let this thread turn into a please don't force W8 on us thread.

There is literally nothing else to talk about. It's just a more efficient DirectX and the whole deal is whether or not it is dependent on the OS.

Mantle: only ATI
DX12: only Windows 8+
