DirectX 12 GDC 2014 presentation: Low-Level Access, DX11 GPUs, Holiday 2015

Uhmmm... no offense but Forza runs on a very stable 60fps 1080p on retail Xbox One hardware already. The port is just to show that it's simple to port to DX12 with no hit in performance.

What they're advertising is an INCREASE in performance. And I don't doubt it a bit. I would have preferred they used a game that had performance issues as an example, instead. The demo really just showed the FPS, but I didn't see a mention of actual visual upgrades.

anything that reduces CPU overhead is good for a system with a really weak CPU, this doesn't really improve GPU performance though and that's where the xbone suffers compared to PS4

It indirectly increases GPU performance if the CPU was the bottleneck because the GPU doesn't have to wait to do its work anymore. (Or at least not that long)

Accepting success. Mantle kicked MS into releasing this. Its also pushed OGL activity

You think so? I believe its the perfomance problems of the X1 that is forcing MS in finally take DX more seriously and squeeze all the juice possible to close the gap with the PS4.

I'm honestly wondering what some people were expecting from an API upgrade.

A new throttle pedal doesn't give the engine more horse power. Mantle was overhyped a bit as well.

But as I said, reducing the CPU footprint and parallelizing the runtime is certainly a valuable thing especially given the XBO's CPU. I would be surprised though if the XBO doesn't already have many of those improvements. For instance, they already spoke about improved low-level support when they announced the XBO's "mono" driver.

my point is that when you compare third party games on ps4 vs xbone the GPU is the bottleneck because their CPUs are identical

Greywind and VisceralBowl, can you guys draw straws or something and decide who posts the pics? Trying to follow the thread on a phone.

Has Microsoft given up on the XBO and is bringing every game to the PC or why is that Forza 5 demo running on a PC?

My guess is their going to try to leverage the easy of portability between Xbox and PC if they're going to use the same(similar) API's so it's easier for third parties to port between them.

so..will this make mantle useless?

Only if ported to *NIX. Knowing Microsoft, that won't happen.

Which means if DICE/EA/AMD finally commit to *NIX porting, maybe that'd have a chance with OpenGL.

From one of the leaked slide decks, they apparently wanted, at one point, for the platform to be licensable. Meaning, hardware makers could put the XBone OS on their hardware and sell it.

Didn't they say 4 man months? I believe that means it took a team of 4 one month. I could be wrong though...

yep. 4 man months. that's a really good turn around.

I hope no one is taking it of confirmation of a PC version just because it was running on NVidia hardware. That's just highlighting that it's still platform agnostic, I would imagine.
