Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

I think it does waaaay too much damage even with all that defense, but I found a way:
Do you have a Gyrm Greatshield? When I saw the dragon reeling up to vomit fire all over me from the sky, I two-handed the Gyrm Greatshield, targeted his head and blocked. The fire strikes twice, the second knocks me off balance but after that it doesn't matter. So my advice is to get a shield with 100% fire block and very high stability.

By the way, even while blocking with the greatshield, the first flame attack knocked off 90% of my stamina, so I don't think any practical amount of fire defense will work if you still get killed in the first tick of damage
Hmm I do have that shield (dropped randomly from a dude I killed on my way to visit Gavlan to buy poison arrows haha), but it requires 32 str and I have 16. Even by two handing it I don't have enough strength.

Guess I'll just have to run like mad when he starts spewing it then. It looked harder to avoid than Kalameet's breath, but maybe I just really mistimed it.

I was able to block it, and I've survived a hit if it clipped me, but if you're right in the middle of it I've never survived. I don't think there is anything that is actually OHKO though, it's all just damage so it is probably theoretically possible to survive.
Yeah, theoretically, but maybe it does like 4k damage and even at max stats with the best fire def you'd still die or something. Just wondered if anyone ever survived that attack.

Wish I'd invested heavy in prism stones in Lordran because the price has really skyrocketed in Drangleic.
Hahahaha, I know right? Took me by surprise. Luckily you don't need that many, since
as far as I know there isn't a section like the Crystal Cave with invisible paths.

Yeah, I'm at a boss where I need to summon someone to help me but the online is just completely broken right now. At this point, I've wasted a couple of hours trying to summon help.

Summons don't stay in your world infinitely now. That's especially true for shades which are summoned with small souls signs. They disappear after killing a handful of enemies. If you want somoene to last for most of the level + boss fight you'll have to find a normal soul sign.
The seed is a one use item but you can get more at the
tree of giants in soldiers rest. Each time you are invaded that tree has a steadily increasing chance to grow such a seed.
Can't really talk from experience here but many people enjoy the falchion, which is basically a direct upgrade to the scimitar.
Finally, covenant effects are only active as long as you are in that covenant. You can just abandon the covenant of Champions and everything should go back to normal.
thanks. then it seems that pretty much every gift is useless? Rip master key.
and what about katanas? Is there any good one worth upgrading.

It's maybe a bit early, but having never played a DS game before, should I play DS2 or is the previous one better?

I feel very strongly that Dark Souls 1 should be the first Souls game anyone plays, and that it should be played blind paying very close attention to every detail. If you get stuck, turn on online mode and look for helpful messages around levels. If you are still stuck, summon help. If you are still stuck, ask someone who knows only to give you hints. Then when you beat the game, read up on plot points and secret areas you missed.

Personally I played Demon's Souls first, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I feel it was like a rough draft of Dark Souls and only diminished the impact of the much more significant Dark Souls experience. Dark Souls II is also a great game, but it is not at all a work of art the way Dark Souls is. Use whatever help or guides you want with Dark Souls II, it's just a videogame to have fun with.

Beat
Smelter Demon last night, and Old Iron King.
Feeling super accomplished.
Shaded Woods
is next, correct?

Anything I should be doing/getting before I make my way there, SoulsGAF?

This "Failed to create summon sign" really upset me tonight.
Finished my first run solo and wanted to coop in new game plus so it´s kinda sad.

a fragrant branch of yore and some skimpy clothes

Hmm I suddenly have a bunch of new travel-able bonfires listed as "???" which I can't use.

Is this a bug?

pretty sure that happens to everyone at the same point although they are, as you discovered, not travel-able. probably there for completionists to know how many bonfires they are missing.

Actually, two handing doubles your strength as opposed to 1.5x in Dark Souls 1. Lucky you, you just made the requirements. :P

I'm a bit worried about this Bone of Order item you have with you since the start. It says it restores the connection to other worlds after you disconnected "unjustly". Does that mean if PSN decides to shit itself often enough while I'm invading or being invaded that multiplayer will be locked out after a while?
Sometimes I'm just randomly disconnected from PSN without my internet connection dropping so this worries me a bit.

Tried using it but it only said I can't at this time.

They finally released a Souls game with flawlessly working multiplayer and fucked it up with a patch.

You should check out the area where you fought
the smelter demon
...

A nice shiney surprise awaits you there.

Wow fuck me, summoning and getting summoned seems to work fine everywhere else BUT the Lost Bastille where I actually need help

Jesus Christ

Ring of Soul Protection and Ring of Life Protection seem pretty broken when you are in late game and you can just farm those souls to repair them without a problem.

Lol I'm literally thinking the same thing as I am currently in the same place.

If I go elsewhere I see summon signs, just not here.

I was about ask about how to survive Belfry Luna because there's no way I can fend off two invaders at once and then I remembered I can play offline. I'm dumb.

Yeah that's where I'm at too... I'm not at all amused by the boss or by the summoning difficulty :/ Hopefully it will work soon...

I'm pretty sure I read that the Bone of Order is just the counter-measure to burning a Human Effigy at the bonfire. In case you want to "undo" it, but I could be wrong here. Reddit had a debate about it a few days ago, IIRC.

iron keep spoiler questions

As I was exploring the area between smelter demon and the old king, I discovered the mimic after climbing the ladder at the far end of that room with the lever that lowers the platform, and then continuing up to roof area that has some treasure items guarded by several allone knights with katana and bows.

Does the mimic hold anything good, I ran away from it with a sliver of health. And is there anything worth grabbing up on that roof? (not to be confused with the Belfry roof, this is on the opposite side.)

It has been broken there since I started. I lucked out eventually but that area in particular always caused problems with me pre-patch.

To anyone worried about a finite supply of Effigies, there is a way around it. If you save a couple of effigies till the late game you can
do the abyss dungeons with + item find gear on for the ascetics that drop often in the area. You can use the ascetics to basically farm the areas with dropable effigies forever.

I invaded Licia in that miracle contraption place she hangs out at, and killed her and got her loot. Is there any other place where I can use it? Just a yes/no please. Thanks!

Yep and yep, really needs to be fixed soon.

In the meantime, I'll just help people in the wharf and around for the heck of it. Helping is fun.

Wish I'd get the sunbro medals already tho

It also increases the bonfire intensity though which basically adds another ng+ difficulty step on top of what you currently are on.

dat WoG, I had a harder time there than any boss bar smelter demon

Huh. When I tried to start up the game I got a message saying "No ethernet cable connected. Returning to title menu." Which was technically correct, but overlooking that this is the 21st century and we can transmit data through the air now. Restarting seems to have fixed it though.

Not having any trouble getting jolly co-operation going against everybody's favorite big burn-y best friend post-patch, though.

ugh, I need a break. (endgame)
I'm basically about to finish it with Nito's Waifu being my next victim (except for some optional bosses), but the constant cursing, life draining and ima-chargin-mah-lazors! is also draining my patience.

also, anybody noticed how kinda slow the movement gets when you're fighting in a huge area? noticed that during the
ancient dragon fight
and now with
what's her face
too.

Can someone explain how soul memory works? I just saw it in the corner of the ui and I'm not sure what it does excatly.

It's the total number of souls you've earned in your playthrough. It partly affects who invades you and who can summon you and who you can summon. The details are sketchy though.

what's the name of those dungeons.

Asking questions for help when you simply don't know the solutions or are interested in something is okay, but using a guide is probably the worst advice I'd give for any of the souls games. Just go and explore without worrying if you're doing things right. They're all just videogames to have fun with, DaS II may not be as atmospherically brilliant and has a handful of other issues, but the satisfaction of conquering areas and exploring the unknown is just as strong as it was in the first. I'd argue stronger, since Dark Souls 1 wore me out with some of its never ending god awful areas.

There has been a patch? Restarted my Xbox, internet, and game multiple times today trying to deal with the summoning issues. Been playing all day with no updates, summoning did break earlier.

Still can't summon or be summoned.

In Drangleic castle, could really do with help! What are those tall gold enemies all about, absolute bastards. Do I need to kill the boss before I can get the soul vessel in here?

Is this soul memory a real thing?
Holy shit From Software, what are you doing? This is dangerous, very dangerous for the game and the community.
Please fix it before it's too late.
