Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

...

I actually went into
Drangleic Castle
the first time around with only two great souls.

How did you go about doing that? I thought the S
hrine
of W
inter
only opens if you have all four...? I am pretty sure I tried going too with only two or three and it wouldn't let me though.

How does that work?

The
Maiden stood at the same spot she does when you do have all four souls, but her dialogue is different if you haven't gotten them all yet. She basically tells you in no uncertain terms that you're not ready, but she also doesn't bar the way.

Well you have to wounder how much one has to do with other. When making the game if you are planing to just give warp from the beginning you design it differently then if you expect the players to fluidly move back and forth though the world. You wouldn't be able to have the world so disconnected since it really would be a chore to move though. But that isn't something you have to worry about if you design it around being able to teleport right away.
Yeah, I'd agree with that. It probably ended up that way because they designed the game around warping.

Fully in agreement with this. People who want to explore will, people who don't won't, regardless of how easy or not it is.
Indeed. Its possible to take the fastest and easiest way in Dark Souls 1 as well. You just need to to do enough exploring to find the bonfires, then you usually get a sense on which direction you're going in further (meaning that you can choose to not explore more in the area you just been in). The only difference i can see is if one forget the way back from one bonfire to another, and ending up exploring an area that one didnt visit to begin with by accident.

I see the points being made just to mention that, but for me personally, i would explore everything regardless, so warping earlier in the game is just a positive thing for me :)

You also have to have a soul memory of over a million for the first time though I think. If it's lower then that and you don't have the boss souls then the door doesn't open.

Question about Soul Vessel:
I hear that if you're female, it fucks up your customization and maybe even turns you into a male? Is that true? If so, does using the coffin fix it (and re-gain your appearance customization)?

I might try respeccing my dex for the dragon fight (to use some magic support... yeah yeah I know, I just can't do it on a pure dex -_-) but not if that fucks up my carefully designed avatar, dammit.

Where's the stupid bonfire in D
rangleic Castle?!
After
you open the main gates, go right of the stairs. There's two knights with big shields, take them out and turn to the right, it's right there. What a relief when you finally find it, the trek from Shaded Woods is loooong.

The one
that's hidden behind an illusory wall. No idea how anyone would know it's there without player messages.
It's actually very close to the section you're talking about, lol.

I saw a
'bonfire ahead' message in the main hallway which piqued my curiosity, and I could hear the damn thing. But I never saw a specific message for that wall and found it by pressing A along every wall in that area Doom style.

It's weird because the area is so small it would be reasonable to assume that it doesn't need another bonfire. But there's even smaller areas with two so yeah.

Also, that place is probably more full of sinners than any I've seen in my cracked blue orb adventures. Invaders must love it for some reason.

Yet the design choice that caters to one group provides a better fuller world, while the other is, well what we have here. I do realize how selfish it is for me to want others to play the games like I play the games, but the reality is that it is a change of design that differs between the two that isn't as simple as "well if you don't like the warp, don't use it". Not that you made that claim.

I also feel the need to once again point out that I love this game and am just nitpicking on what I feel is worse from the last one. A bad souls game is still better then most of everything else that is out there.

Pilgrims,
is there three fires to be lit per zone or just three total? Is lighting it enough, or does it reset if you don't go through the fog? I lit a fire and died to a phantom before I could go through the fog door.

Once you enter that area, keep going right.

EDIT: Already answered with a better reply than mine :)

Ugh thank you both. I went left last night. What a long run.

Whaaaat. I didn't find this or the second one in
Alidia's
. I made this game more tedious than it needed to be. v.v

Didn't happen to me.

I still can't get over the fact that there was messages warning me of a mimic chest at the start of Doors of Pharros, so I see a chest and just and whack it a couple times destroying it. 1 minute later I find the actual mimic chest and realize that was the one the messages are referring to. Didn't realize until then that I could destroy real chests.

At the thought of destroying an item, I'd rather just take my chances and get eaten by the mimic rather than accidentally press RB twice.

there's one in each area. Just move on to the next, you'll know you did it right if you drop down through the fog and something different happens.

Wow, I had no idea you could even open
Shrine of Winter without all four souls.
Neat. I guess if you want to get the best emote in the game early that's a run worth making.

Just smack it once...

I'll ask again in case anyone knows

31INT,18FAI, using mostly sorceries now but also have some hexes. Should I ditch the sorcerer's staff for the one in Huntsman's Copse? Not sure if I should keep upgrading it.

Yes, you just explained why it is worse off as a design choice for the game. Most people will pick the easiest and fastest way if provided. Sometimes you have to force them to do something to get them to enjoy it or for it to provide the proper impact. The warp in DS1 for instance had a sense of worth and scale to it since you lived though the game without it for so long. You knew the value since you lived without it.

Don't want this to come off as me being down on the game, I am loving the fuck out of it. Just the world and areas sufferer compared to DS1 because of this.

You might have a point if the world was designed like Dark Souls 1's, but it isn't. There are several linear paths you can go, instead an interwoven world with shortcuts like in DkS1.

In context, the warp works fine and doesn't detract from the world because of the way DkS2's world is designed.

Please read my other followup posts and responses to other people's comments, as they directly relate to exactly what you just said. I'm done derailing this thread and would like to go back to talking about the gameplay.

Fuck i'm addicted to the pvp i like invading fools and killing them while destroying their equipment with my acid spray, yes i'm an asshole lol. Too bad i used all of my red eye stones and i have to go farm them in the pvp duels :(

Dark Souls 2 would be painful without warping. In fact several sections even early on would be impossible. It's a necessary crutch.

Just smack it once...

You didn't read my last sentence...I'd rather die than have the off chance of accidentally smacking a chest more than once. As I've come to realize dieing is of little consequence when you have 2 rings of protection, 1 ring of soul protection, and a ring of binding to back you up.

Aldia's Keep spoiler question:

So I killed that assassin guy. I originally said yes to him just to see if he'd give me neat stuff for taking on his contracts, but the first guy he asked me to kill is Gilligan. Gilligan. Also known as the guy who sells me an unlimited supply of Aromatic Ooze. So I said fuck you to the assassin guy and offed him. Does he end up being meaningful in any way?

I think we all know the true best emote is the channeler's trident dance.

I love busting that out in co-op after killing a boss. It's the ultimate victory dance.

Ohhhh so that's what happens.
Mine always died or got stuck somewhere behind, so I just left him be. So Adgayne aggros and needs pardoning? I assumed he would, but I wondered if just turning off your torch would make him and his minions calm down. Good thing I didn't try my luck.

What happens if you keep the place dark but attack his minions? Does he aggro too? He's a useful NPC actually, so I'm glad I didn't make him hostile. His armour set is pretty good for light armour, has some of the best elemental and curse resistances.

It panned out kinda weird for me, and I didn't entirely grasp what happened 'til I was already dead.
I let the torch guy live since he didn't attack and there were a bunch of messages saying "friend" on the ground in the room, but otherwise I didn't pay much attention to him. I cleared out the room with the witches and zombies then trotted back to the bonfire and lit a torch of my own. Carried it into the room and Agdayne gave me a warning to put my torch out, so I did. Went up the stairs and started talking to him and everything was fine.

Meanwhilst, unbeknownst to me, the torch guy had slowly been trotting after me. He wandered into the room and as soon as he came up the stairs Agdayne went all "I warned you about torches, yo!" and attacked, while his whole horde of guards came up from behind and speared the shit outta me. I was all like "It's not my fault! I don't even know that guy!" but they totes didn't care. They were still aggro when I came back so I headed to Cromwell and got my ludicrously expensive confession on and then they were chill.

So basically Agdayne warns you if you're carrying a torch when you enter the room and goes aggro if you bring a light source of any sort up onto his little platform. I don't think putting the torch out once he's mad would fix anything because as soon as you show him the torch he starts acting like you just used it to burn his dog to death, and I'm not sure what he does if you pick a fight with his guards and I wasn't about to try because I was pretty much walking on eggshells around him from that point onward, the touchy bastard.

FUCK
THE ANCIENT DRAGON
FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
This.

Hahahahaha, that fucking emote.
Which one is that? I forgot.

Didn't happen to me.
Sorry to ask again but, when did you try it on your female toon? The wiki says this:

"WARNING: As of patch V1.01, and calibration 1.03, using the soul vessel to change your stats has an adverse affect of defaulting back to male body if playing as female. (Gender bending coffin boat in tutorial area may fix this)"

Can you tell me if you tried using the vessel post 1.02? Thanks.
