Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

Anyone know what the best Melee weapon options are?

Currently I'm using Halberd +5, and Fire Longsword +5.**also using a Pyro flame +7.**

They still seem plenty effective with scaling in different stats, but I'm not sure if I'm missing out on something amazing that I should be working on. I have a fairly well rounded build... So I don't want an insanely massive sword.

Any tips? I'm probably 2/3 or 3/4 into the game.

After 65 hours I'm at the
Undead Crypt
at level 151.
Shrine of Amana
really took a toll on me and i'm starting to feel burned out. Granted i've exhausted every area and boss up to this point, but i think i need to take a break for a week or so. I'm hoping there are s'more side areas and bosses before the end but i think i'm near the conclusion.

I hate to start playing something new with Reaper of Souls just around the corner though.

You probably need the
Giant's Kinship item. To get this you need to get the Ashen Mist Heart from the Ancient Dragon at the Dragon Aerie. Once you have it, go into the memory of the Giant (the trees that look like giants) to get the Giant Kinship. Then go fight the last boss.
I'm honestly curious how you are supposed to know to do all that. How did you know?

Sorc help
I need better Staff than Bone Staff

I have access to B
elfry
T
ower
and H
unter's
C
opse
areas

Unfortunately, most of the better staves are in the last half of the game. I used the default Sorcerer one (upgraded of course) for a longgg time until I finally got the Archdrake Staff from Felkin. It requires some Faith to equip, though. Decent scaling for that point in the game. There's a staff you can get down the hole in the center of Majula, but you can't get access to it until after you do the Black Gulch.

So what's the best place to sunbro farm?

I'm dropping my sign in front of
smelter demon
fog in iron keep at SL114 and I'm getting about 1 summon per 5 mins or so

Easy place to get summoned, horrible place to ensure the safety of the host. 9 times out of 10 the host will just die on me there, same with
Freja
- I never had a host last more than 10 seconds in that fight, so I gave up. I've been having a ton of luck with
the Wandering Magus and his Congregation
in Brightstone Cove so far. Get a summon at least every minute and I've never let a host die there before.

Incidentally I've noticed I haven't encountered any online issues post-patch.

Im at A
ldias Keep
and there is this creepy guy. Do I help him?

Sure.
You don't actually need to kill any NPCs for him. You can get the items he needs as proof by either buying them from the NPC in question or finding them elsewhere. If you complete his questline you get a sweet hood and robe.

I'm honestly curious how you are supposed to know to do all that. How did you know?

I asked for help. I completely bypassed the
Dragon Aerie
section of the game so I had to go back there.

As to how one would know this? Well, the only thing I can think of offhand is that the game puts a fairly big deal on how Drangleic went to war with the Giants and there are several giant corpses throughout the game that allow you to examine them but don't do anything until you have the appropriate item.

Gotcha. I just have a problem with this games direction. I've actually done all that except fight the last boss as I had no idea I was supposed to return to that area because, well shit, why would I? They make no effort to slightly explain why that area is important

Fuck people who drink in PVP, especially those that run away for like 2 minutes to flask. Im not talking about invasions, im talking about PVP on the iron keep bridge.

Yeah I don't understand why you'd summon someone for a duel and then do shit like that, or stand on their spawn and try to backstab/firestorm. Not that the latter works.

In invasions I expect heal attempts and that's why I have 99 Lloyd's talismans.

Anyways last night I fought the (optional boss):
Ancient Dragon. I was expecting Kalameet 2.0 and I got the worst fight in the series since Bed of Chaos. Just awful. Putting in near-unavoidable one shot mechanics is not good design and it's baffling how a developer who made such a great game would put in an enemy this stupid. Ended up beating it by just running back and forth across his field of view hurling lightning bolts in order to bait the forward breath, and running for my life (while naked) whenever I saw his wings start flapping. Even using that cheese strategy it took several attempts before he stopped randomly deciding to do the fly-up fire breath multiple times in a row which was unavoidable death due to positioning changes. Never doing that again.

Oh sure. But these games already make so little lore sense to me that I just sort of smile and nod. Don't get me wrong I get the basic idea of what is going on but hell if I know any of the specific details for any of the Souls games. Something something Undead something something Darkness.

Just finished the game(although I have some bonfire aesthetic/covenant things to clean up) and I thought it was a pretty marvelous game despite a few misgivings. The primary ones would be some really rotten areas that are for the first time in the series(for me at least) just kind of unfair and annoying.

The other would be the lack of coherency to the world and story. While I don't mind so much that most of the world isn't connected because it let them do some really neat things and make creative locales, the story was just all over the place. I never really understood what I was doing or why, and when I finished the game with the final boss being someone never before mentioned I couldn't help but be a bit confused. While I'm sure the lore is still great when I dig a bit more into that, the game's progression and narrative is kind of incoherent in a way the other games weren't.

Also a bummer about the downgrades, fingers crossed for the PC version.

I think I'm going to get my gf to try this game (she's pretty hardcore and beat Super Mario 3). I want her to be a mage, because mage's kept raping me in PVP. I want her to have Lightning Spear.

Can anyone give me like 5 tips for making a mage start easier? I read someone pointing out some early spell locations/item locations and such, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks, and wish me luck! How cool would it be to hear a girl on your headphones playing DS2 (I haven't run into any yet).

Ok just finished the game, last boss was pretty lame but i loved the design (in line with Souls game, really)

Weird thing is that, when i finished DkS, i couldn't wait to start a new playthrough with a different class or NG+, no will to go back so far

I might as well wait for the pc version to give it another go, no idea, i'm weird

Ok, who is the other merchant besides Straid that will trade boss souls for weapons. He won't talk to me because of my low intelligence rating. If there's nobody else, then I'm just going to use all these to level up. Seems like a stupid waste though.

Nice. How are you finding dual weapon builds?

Liking the whole dual-wielding mechanic a hell of a lot actually. I appreciate that you can seemingly duel-wield every combination of weapon in the game, even if they can't be powerstanced together. It really can be quite useful simply to have two different 1H movesets available instantly - especially one with say, an R2 thrust vs one with an R2 swipe - and they can each be switched to 2H quickly as well.

I love the fact that 2H weapons can now parry, and certain normal weapons can still parry while dual-wielding if they're in your left hand (like a Falchion). I love that you get three equipment slots in each hand to experiment with and try out different combinations, along with four ring slots (and boo to the people who feel the need to keep a Ring of Life Protection in a slot at all times - live a little!)

The dual-wielding powerstance in general is a great addition. The main combo I go with - Berserker Blade and Blacksteel Katana - does a very nice amount of damage with its powerstance attacks (especially L1, which is hugely effective). The katana L1 powerstance attack is a straight horizontal slash with both swords simultaneously, and it's fast, has quick recovery, reasonable stamina consumption, and does impressive damage. It's one of those moves that really conveys the usefulness of a dual-wielding build, given its speed and burst damage.

At some point I was messing around with the Channeler's Trident in co-op and was surprised to find I could actually powerstance it with the Berserker Blade. I originally thought the weapons had to be in the same class to go into powerstance - that is two katanas, two axes, two curved swords, etc, but that isn't the case. The Trident's attack type is thrust, and the Berserker's is thrust/slash, and they ended up combo'ing together for simultaneous thrust attacks. Very cool.

So I'm interested and curious about the possibilities dual-wielding has. Depending on the weapons you're using, what you give up in defense you really can make up in sheer offensive prowess. I've decimated bosses and PvP opponents alike with dual attacks combined with effective dodging. As someone who predominantly plays the Souls series as a sort of melee glass cannon - able to inflict good damage but not able to take much if I actually get hit, and always trying to dodge instead of block - dual-wielding is just the thing I've been waiting for.

I had some severe criticisms about the game in earlier posts, regarding level and enemy (especially boss) design. And those do still hold. But I'm also a huge fan of some of the core mechanical changes and additions they've made, and if I could retroactively fit them into the previous Souls games I'd do so in a heartbeat. That also includes the bonfire ascetic, which is just phenomenal. The risk/reward element there is quite attractive and well-conceived.

Question about a room right by the first bonfire in Drangleic Castle:

That room is nuts with Ruin Sentinels and stone knights, but after fight for a while (3 spawns) one of the torches in the back of the room lit up. I can't seem to get the other to light up? What is that? By the way, I'm far on now and into Amana Shine, so it's obviously not a required area.

So what is the average level people beat this game with?

I have grinded quite a bit, beat every boss, been summoned a few dozen times, etc and ended at 150 with 57 hours played. Keep in mind though I've spent a huge amount of souls of weapons, items, and so on so I'm sure you could end much higher too. Also worth keeping in mind is I have always played with a Covetous Silver Serpent Ring on.

The golems need souls to activate. Kill one of the little soldier enemies near it and it makes the golems move. That being said, I haven't seen any result of getting both torches lit so I don't know if it does anything.

same mechanic that got you into the castle.
and for me the room is the only way to go and I am not where you also are.

You have to kill an enemy near a door. The doors devour souls

Question for people on NG+:

Has anybody tried fighting the Smelter Demon first without killing the Pursuer and seeing if he still appears afterwards?

That's one of the things I want to try on my second playthrough and am curious if anybody else has thought of doing it yet.

What's the easiest place to be summoned at lvl 81 ?

Level isn't important so much as your Soul Memory. That being said, I was probably still getting summoned at that level in
Iron Keep
for sure, and anywhere beyond that is probably good as well. But that's a rough estimate and really depends on how much you've been doing summoning up until this point.

Haha, it's great that (Iron Keep)
Smelter Demon
is kicking my butt after the two pathetically easy bosses in Earthen Peak,
though I presume Mytha would've been a lot more difficult unless I had stumbled upon the solution to draining the poison before facing her :P

I take it you still need a divine weapon to kill skeletons, right?

where do I get one? I haven't seen any D:

Nope. If you're in a certain area, though, they keep respawning because:
the necromancer wizards nearby. Kill them and they don't respawn and the skeletons stop reviving too.

WTH I had no sin yesterday and now I got myself 165000 souls in sins to pay if I want to absolve them. The only thing I did was to kill the B
elfry
S
ol
red phantom to up my covenant rank to lv2...how could I gain sin from that? O_o

Hopefully someone can help i lit the four
primal bonfires
and have no idea where to go next. I assumed that i had to head for the shaded woods but the door wont open. :/

Thing is that I can't do *** on this zone boss with my only available and correct weapon right now....
fire sword
.

(I'm stuck at this boss)
Place down a summon at very beginning of iron keep. That way you get a lot of souls from host world on way to boss. For that fight, you'd prob want to avoid fire weapons too.

I see, the respawn time seems waaay longer than DkS1 too, should be easy then.

It's amazing how a little help goes a long way in this game.
Earthen Peak
would have driven me crazy if I hadn't seen some of it beforehand. And if I didn't know about
the windmill.

Add to that the summon for the boss
Jester Thomas
and that place was a piece of cake.

But now I'm about to take on
Iron Keep
without any knowledge of it. I expect to have a rough time.
