Finally finished off the A
ncient Dragon
after a mile of tears. Afterwards, V
endrick was pretty simple since I had all 5 Giant souls. Had no idea were his soul was until I looked it up online.

Anyway, now I'm on to the D
arklurker who has been giving me a giant ass beating as soon as it splits. I don't use Pyromancy aside from a couple spells, but I'm making it a must for this fight considering it does a little bit more damage than my sword and helps me keep a safe distance. I ran out of Human Effigies which is a pain, because now if I want to challenge it again I either have the option to go farming or kill the old firekeepers.

Boss has two heads, when one is doing a long winded attack, go across the body and beat the other head, that should give you an opening to do a few hits.

Kill all the small spiders first. Stay right against its sides, the legs won't be able to hurt you. If you do this, then you can just observe when the heads of the spider are vulnerable to attack. Usually you can hit the spider 2-3 times and then roll away when it starts to do an attack.
 
^ The beam attack is a lot like the Moonlight Butterfly from DS1, it sweeps across left to right and you can roll through it right to left. Or just circle/run right to avoid until the attack ends.



In terms of linearity it doesn't seem that different to either Demon's or DS1.

It's very open at the beginning just like DS1, except Lordran starts off very connected and circular, it was always a pleasant surprise to end up back at a familiar place when you felt so far away. You don't ever get that in DS2 because the areas (so far) have been multiple branching paths, you work your way through areas that are sectioned off by boss fights, then a final confrontation and dead end - Which is more like Demon's. You can choose which paths to take so it does seem open at first just like DS1 they just don't all interconnect. In fact DS1 was like this really, the lord soul bosses all end the same way as DS2 great soul bosses and Demon's arch demons.

I do really miss that interconnected design of Lordran though, it was so special <3

Iron Keep is a good example. You can open up the furnace and skip the Smelter Demon or fight Smelter and get access to another bonfire.
Plus there's the optional short cut that you can open up.
Then after Smelter, there's two different routes leading to the Old Iron King.

I'd compare it to the level design of 1-1 from Demon's Souls. There's a couple branching paths that lead to dead ends and one route to finish the level. Along the way there's a couple shortcuts you can activate that open the level up.

Two routes to old iron king? There's the annoying route with the archers and ironclad soldiers on platforms, what's the other one?

I couldn't say that it's truly linear, but it does have progression gated scenarios. So it's more like it is linear in a sense macro wise, but micro wise you don't necessarily have to follow a strict order for every playthrough.

The way the games are separated into interconnected "levels" is very similar, and again, as of my limited experience 26 hours in, it seems like there's one main path that you can go down a few different ways, but there's still some sense of an intended order and linearity even if you can choose when you fight what. I don't think it's that much of a stretch. And it's no insult either.
 
Well, I just beat Dark Souls for the first time today, so officially am moving on to DS2. Pumped to get into it, I've just reached Majula as a warrior. I'm loving the quicker movement so far!

I never in my +200 hours on DS1 and my 50 hours on DS2 got any hate message (on 360).

And I fucked a lot of people in the Dukes Archives...

In all my invasions I only got one message, and thats from a dude that told me I scared the shit out of him when I attacked him. I laughted irl when I saw it.

My feelings, exactly.

In that regard, although both games are pretty non-linear, the original Dark Souls gives a much clearer impression of being so. Opening a short cut and getting beck to the main HUB was very, very, very satisfying. Also, I feel the areas in the Original game were less unforgiving, with bonfires being further apart from each other, which added to the tension. It seems I'm always stumbling upon a bonfire in DS2.

Also, being able to travel from bonfire to bonfire since the start of the game makes it feel more segmented than DS.
 
Beat the game today at 29 hours, SL120ish. Did all the bosses except for
Vendrick, Ancient Dragon and Darklurker
. Wore Wanderer's Garb the whole game and ended up using a +10 Ricard's Rapier for most of the game.

Being good at Souls (having done both De and Da already) hampers the game I think. Outside of the 6 or so many-vs-one fights, I finished most bosses within 3 attempts, and many on the first try. Because of this, the game went by really fast and I didn't have time to really appreciate any of the areas or feel the despair of "I guess this is my home for a while".

My favorite areas are the ones I died the most in:
Shrine of Amana
Iron Keep
Lost Bastille
Undead Crypt

My favourite boss was probably
the guy before Vendrick
. For whatever reason, the rhythm of his attacks seemed off from Souls norms to me. Unlike the other melee bosses, my internal clock for dodging didn't line up with his swings.

Now to sell my 360 copy and wait for the PC version to come out for round 2.

Seems to happen so randomly that it seems like one, however I have heard that it could be a random chance to become human every time you're summoned, with the large white soapstone giving you better chances.

Sitck to the right side of a head if you're far away dealing with the initial spiders, cause it'll probably beam you. Run to the right as fast as you can. When the spiders are all dead, stick to a side and a hug it, because the leg stomps won't get that close to the body. As long as no one is far away from the spider, it shouldn't use its beam attack.

I don't see that at all. I can't think of anything that I would consider the "main path" or intended order of bosses.

I can't quite describe it, two phantoms walked me through the alternative path. It doesn't lead out straight to the OIK, the paths meet a bit before the Idol bonfire.

gleic castle bugged? after the duo dragonrider i go the ladder up, fight the horde of stone soldiers with the golem statue in the room. i just checked online and....why didn't the golem statue move in my game? i've been running around aimlessly for 30 minutes.

anybody else had this happen?
 
I played around a lot with the
smelter demon
this weekend and found some things out.

If a player doesn't turn off the furnace the boss gets a pretty big buff. He starts on fire and his power up is even stronger. It's not as obvious as the poison room, but i bet this is why people are struggling at times, while others are plowing through him.

I swear I got invaded by another bell keeper while invading someone else's world at the time. Place is a madhouse.

-Supposed solution to poise being busted is Old Sun Ring, which is busted
-Hexes, hexes everywhere

Kill the units next to the golem, if they are too far away it won't absorb the soul
. Also,
all he does is turn on an elevator
, which
then leads to a key
, which
you then use to unlock a door that leads to the next boss
.

Yeah I never turned of the furnace. Guess that explains that.

I think there's an argument to be made for a main order for the game. I would guess most people do the Great Souls in this order:
Sinner -> Freya -> Old Iron King -> Gutter Demon
. Mainly because
it's not obvious that finding the cleric opens the path through the church
and
the game leads you pretty strongly to Lost Bastille from both Forest and Burning Tower, and killing Sinner gets you a de-petrify item for the path to Freya
.

Was that early in the game? Cause from the way I understand the person in the Way of the Blue has to be wearing the ring to summon help.

I imagine if you're still in that covenant later on you've probably filled up your ring slots with actual stuff to help you.

thanks. that's a bit cryptic. i was running around in empty hallways searching for levers the whole time. i wonder what'll happen if you kill them and they don't respawn.

you need to make sure that you kill one of the mobs near the golem or he won´t take his soul.
 
Is it possible to do NPC invasions for the Bell Covenent while offline? Saw something posted a while back that may have suggested it, but wasn't sure. I'd like to farm some chunks, but I'm only getting invaded and not doing any myself.
 
The cloth physics in this game make me so happy. So rad.

However, the two-hand weapon stance for most swords is not. They fixed the stance in Dark Souls and then reverted back to the dumb one from Demon's.

You have to kill them directly next to the golem statue. Too far away, and it does nothing.

Agree with everything except for hexes. Pyromancy is used more often and the new spells are harder to dodge. Hexes are easy as hell to dodge.

I would agree that those two fights are pretty close, but I do think O and S were a bit harder. All the hard bosses were early in the game, so, again with the exception of the
Ancient Dragon
, I really don't think the bosses overall are harder. I would actually say with that one exception the average difficulty of bosses is significantly easier.
 
Poise is useless in Pvp in 90% of cases. Its like Demons Souls in that regard where everything would stagger you. However there was nowhere near as much stun locking. Thats where ADP and rings like Old Sun ring come in to counteract this. Just watching streams and hardly anyone fishes for back stabs let alone successfully lands one. I think DS2 PvP looks to be better than DkS PvP in that regard. Some nerfs may be needed like some magic spells.
 
Do titanite chunks/slabs become more available later in the game? I'm currently at the
Iron Keep
and I still haven't found enough titanite to fully upgrade my mace (Currently +7). I was hoping to upgrade my claymore at some point as well, but chunks/slabs seem hard to come by thus far.

I understand that you don't mean it as an insult, I just can't see or understand the pokemon similarities in terms of progression. DS2 is far less linear than pokemon. You can't fight the 3rd gym before the 1st gym in pokemon. In DS2, we don't technically know what the "first" Old One is.

Are you only talking about the physical layout of each distinct area? Or actual game progression?

Im pretty sure the stone guys never stop spawning. Which is great since they drop titanite chunks and slabs.

spider boss
beaten. Pretty funny. I had a NPC summon with a player summon. They were at opposites sides of it so it kept turning around over and over and stamping it's legs so we were able to just wail on it until it died. Love confused AI.
 
So Faith users, what are some good Chimes to go after? I currently only have the original Cleric's Sacred Chime, wondering if there is anything much better to get...

Also, what other spells aside from lightning spear should I go for?

Best way to get chunks is bellkeeper convenant, best way to get slabs is later in the game, a certain type of enemy drops them left and right if you have any boost to item discovery on you(+a ton of crystal lizards drop them later).

wasn't nearly as bad as I expected from some of the impressions here.
Got the small rats easily by first sniping one of them from faraway with great soul arrows;the rest would usually charge towards me in a group so I could easily wipe them out with one or two swings before the boss would be on me. Smelly Sif hits hard, but most attacks are quite easy to dodge, and the charge attack is especially easy to punish when you get the timing down.

Having a great time serving my one true rodent king in the rat covenant, really fun to gang up on fools with rat bros and elephant knights.
Love that I don't have to dread wasting pharos stones on useless junk anymore
