if the consumer version isn't two + years away I can't imagine it will be significantly different from Dk2 in anyway.

The screen will be higher res apparently so thats a big difference to me. Regardless I just want to know how to cancel in case I do decide to. I probably won't as I really want to experience vr as soon as possible but i want the option.
 
Does the Rift work as a monitor on any other devices? Could I use it to watch 3D movies like the Sony HMZ? Or will it only work when hooked to a PC?
 
Well, shit. I'm genuinely disappointed.
OK, more funds for Oculus is better, but I think I'd feel the same if someone like McDonalds bought them.

EDIT: This post by Palmer was a little more re-assuring I guess. I just hope the Facebook brand and all that shite stays well out of my VR.
 
Frankly, this is good news for the Oculus team. With more more resources at their disposal, this is good news for VR.

Well, I will jump off the Oculus train sooner rather than later (when a credible competitor emerges), but it's not like there will be better VR available this July than DK2, or like the product got worse.
 
Does this change anything for developers? What does Facebook now require of current and potential Oculus customers and developers, if anything?

I can't imagine all the questions this must raise.
 
Yea I see this is as good news.

I hope it pans out well though wonder if Sony is watching closely and crapping their pants now at the prospect of RIFT now also developing a superior VR solution along side the pc one to work with the xbox one.

100% sure the current future of VR is still in capable hands, but it's future is likely a tragic failure of some sort of commercialised dystopian platform. I think for now this has taken most of the excitement and interest out of grabbing a rift primarily or PC gaming. I'll probably wait a fair while to determine what the best options are which may well include the rift, but later I will likely switch to whatever is actually doing what I like.

Urgh, what a horrible feeling this is. My interest in building a new PC is also pretty low at the moment.
 
Ugh. I appreciate that this Facebook thing is great for Oculus as a company, but I gotta say, it really makes me uneasy about the inevitable shift in focus. I hope the cool experimental enthusiast projects don't get drowned by the huge mainstream push they're certainly going to be making.

Being a quality gaming machine is probably the absolute floor of what the technology would need to be in order for Facebook to meet its vision for the machine.
 
This is great news not just for Oculus, but for all the VR technology (despite the bad taste that Facebook can produce in most of us).

The current application for games will not disapear of course (it could even increase). But also tons of developers and consumers will join, and the application of this technology will raise exponentially to many other fields.

Imagine in some years:
-Play videogames with VR
-Go to facebook and join a VR chat
-Go to a travel agency webpage and be able to see a 360° view of famous places of where you want to travel
-Go to google earth and see the interior of famous buildings or the streets
-Live events with VR in a 360° view
-Learning curses in VR (medicine, architecture, 3d modeling...)
...

Certainly this tecnology is not just for gaming, it can also be a big social tool like the TV was. Facebook certainly realized about that. Is the best move that they could ever do.

And of course, with a huge giant like Facebook on the boat, others like Sony, Google, Microsoft, Amazon... will probably also jump in. Meaning even a bigger push to the technology and competitivity which always is great for the customers.

Well, at their current pace [even before FB announcment], CV1 was never possible to come out in 2014. They will leave 6+ months for devs who purchase DK2 to prepare games, plus they still dont have solution for hand tracking.

I still believe that late Q1 2015 is still the earliest we will see it.

They also now have the money to rush production. It costs a boatload of cash to manufacture something in decent numbers without taking months to set everything up.

We have had a lot of interest in the past, but only from people who would tear us apart and make us work on their own stuff. We have zero interest in doing that, and there is no number that could convince us otherwise.

DK2 will be the exact same thing.

And I don't think CV1 will change much. It's the long-term future which has come into question.
 
Yeah people are panicking for nothing right now.

And again and again, VR is not compatible with facebook at all, for now. So stop imagining they want you to put your glasses on to use facebook.

Facebook has to be always on, and easily usable everywhere. it won't happen with VR. it could be possible with a google glass equivalent maybe..

The VR thing, they want it for extra content. As a device to sell vr content to people, tourism, sport, etc..

And by the way Sony is aiming the exact same thing on the long term..
