Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Looking at that now, it feels like Sakurai showed off the Brawl roster way too fast.

Yes and no. It wasn't so much that it was shown off fast, but more that there were barely any hidden newcomers. Brawl has 14 hidden characters. 2 are third parties. 3 are full newcomers (Wolf, Lucario, R.O.B.), and 1's Toon Link which is arguably not a newcomer. The rest are veterans.
Melee, on the other hand, has 11 hidden characters, and only 2 of them are veterans.
I'd be very happy if they were more likely Melee this time, and made almost all the newcomers hidden.

And deal with the batshit nonsense that people will spout when there are only a few newcomers revealed pre-release? No thanks.

Eh, fuck 'em. People are gonna spout bullshit regardless. I'd rather have there actually be secrets to uncover this time, since Brawl didn't have many.

Agreed. I'd rather every character but maybe one or two (Mewtwo, & Ridley) be revealed pre-release.

Besides, Nintendo and Sakurai desperately need to drum up hype and those release videos are tits awesome and won't have the same effect post-release.

To catch up on discussion:

Wonder-Red will be in! I gotta believe!
I'm slowly accepting that Sakurai won't care about any of my favourite characters.

I'll be getting Wii U version day 1, 3DS version can wait. I want an XL for it for sure, my old 3DS will kill my hands trying to play Smash.

Aaaaaand I'd rather newcomers were kept a secret. I'd avoid Smash discussion as best as I could and play the game nonstop after release and hope I find a surprise character before it gets spoiled :P

The thing about adding newcomers in this game, especially 3rd party newcomers is that the focus/gameplay of the smash bros series can get overwhelming.

What I mean is that if you keep adding people like mega man and sonic, then you add their original gameplay perspective to the smash bros. formula. You need stages, items, moves, and music to match mega mans theme. This is why powerstone was fun in its own way compared to smash bros imo.

I agree. It isn't just as simple as adding your favorite viable third party character & calling it a day. You have to add the right stage, music, assist trophy, items and make it all mesh with the formula without feeling out of place, which Sakurai has said many times, which is why Snake, Sonic, & now Megaman are such special cases. There will never be non-primary 3rd party characters or non-iconic ones as long as Sakurai has say so. Mark my words, naruto & batman.

At least Sakurai can add is Dr Eggman and Dr Wily as villains for the game. He wouldn't need to retool the game that much when Sonic and Megaman are already in the game

What? I don't understand why people aren't interested to unlocking the characters, etc. I guess they got spoiled by majority of fighting games where they don't have to unlocked the characters, as I assumed? I would rather to have unlockable characters that would surprise us when we get the game and trying to find way to unlock them.

Personally I'd like it if we're given the full roster at the start. Other things like stages, game modes, trophies and such I don't really mind being unlocks. :x

Out of curiosity, how many newcomers does everyone think there will be in the end? And considering 5 have already been revealed how many of those should be hidden characters?

Personally I think the Mii and Pacman rumour is true, and one of them will be shown off at E3, so my hidden newcomers would be Mii/Pacman, Ridley, Shulk and Black Knight Fire Emblem Avatar.

I would go with very safe number which is 10, so people wouldn't get disappointed by the final number of newcomers.

My money is on 11-13.

As awesome as it is to have a bunch of newcomers as hidden characters for the surprise factor, it's all going to get leaked online as soon as the game comes out anyway. Because of that I'd kinda prefer to know all the characters prior to the game's release, lol, because it's going to happen one way or another anyway. Times aren't exactly the same as they were when Melee came out and it was easy to keep hidden characters in games a secret.

Probably around 10-12. And I think Mega Man will be the only hidden character out of the 5.

I say 13 total including the Mii/Pacman leak and accounting for the 5 we know about currently. 10 minimum, 15 max. Don't know what to think regarding hidden newcomers though.

This is true, and it kinda sucks. The only way they can get around leaks is maybe if they release it on the eshop early ala Wind Waker HD. Even still, stuff would probably get out somehow.

I actually meant which newcomers would not be revealed before release at all, but it's interesting you think Mega Man would be the only unlockable one - I'd say Mega Man would be a character people want to use right away, so Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer and Rosalina & Luma would be unlockable IMO.

then you'll have to do the hardest thing imaginable a challenge greater then Dark souls, I wanna be that guy and the sewer level in TMNT combined.

Mega Man is a guest character, so it's fitting that he would be unlockable. Sonic and Snake were both hidden in Brawl. I'm not expecting Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, or Rosalina & Luma to be hidden. I don't see why hidden non-guest characters would be revealed so far away from release.

Oh I miss read it. Yeah, Sonic and Snake were announced pretty early on in the dojo and were both unlocakable. I have a feeling that the same.will happen to Mega Man.

You care too much about what others think.
Then ignore those people. It's their problem, not your.
You guys are right, but it isn't something Nintendo can ignore. The more I think about it, the more I see no reason for there to be unlockable newcomers. Sakurai wants to show the CG stuff in a controlled environment and they need to show reasons why to get the game. Newcomers are the biggest reasons for that.

The trailers are a lot more hype than getting a newcomer thing while playing. Though the latter is more surprising since you may not expect it.

I really think Sakurai's gonna try to hit that 50 character mark, even if it means getting a few clones (which I don't mind honestly. My mains in Melee and Brawl were both clones).

If we ever have unlockable characters then I really hope that people are decent enough to make a smash spoiler thread and post there.

All of the characters will be unlockable.

Demo mode must be watched for 100 hours before you can unlock Mario.

All the characters will be known five minutes after the game releases. Everyone in this thread will know them all before playing the game. Resistance is futile.

You say this now, but I'm actually surprised that I was able to pull it off for Super Mario Galaxy when it was first coming around. Admittedly, I was kinda waning in Mario love after Sunshine and didn't follow up on it at all until I got my Wii like a month after Brawl dropped, but damn man, I don't know if I'll ever be able to pull something like that off again AND get treated to such an 11/10 experience.

Expect "Just unlocked RIDLEY in Smash Bros!!" threads to pop up and ruin your day.

If we get a worldwide launch, I, being in the superior Australian timezone, will be the one to spoil everyone.

Internet diet.

Avoid those spoiled diapers.

Other M killed Metroid
Donkey Kong is beneath Retro
I still think that Ridley is too big
Nintendo doesn't know anything about anything

While we're on the subject of new character reveals, I'd like Sakurai to leverage Fire Emblem's sword/axe/spear triangle into a new-rep. Essentially the character wouldn't be tied down to just a sword, but would have the ability to change his equipment on the fly.

Sword - Average speed and range. Good for mid-range combat. Used to guard against fast characters.
Axe - Slow speed and short range, but extremely powerful. Used to take down heavy brawler characters.
Spear - Would be a Javelin or a Short Spear. Significant throwing range would allow for zoning for other sword characters.

On top of that you'd have a light durability system, so that you can't just spam the spear or over-use the sword as you would either run-out or your weapon would temporarily break. The game would force you to switch around the different fighting 'stances'.

Just a thought I've had ever since I saw the KO meter for Little Mac. Since Sakurai essentially opened the door for more 'meta' characters.
