How is UFGT a mid-major? It has always been a Road To Evo event, it's one of the best-run tournaments out there, not only in tournament management but in side-tourneys and events for actual players to enjoy, and people like Curly actually reach out to other states' scenes to try to get them to go to the event itself, instead of just announcing it on SRK/releasing a hype trailer then calling it a day.

Lmao, I shoulda figured this clown would post something within 2 minutes of someone mentioning ufgt or keits

it's more regional status to me, tbh

i basically reserve major for FR and CEO and then EVO is it's own thing

majors have to be like, legitimately huge and gathering folks from around the entire country (and maybe world) rather than the region

the way folks use major now kinda bugs me though i do understand why they use it that way

What I consider to be the real American majors:
Evo : FR, NEC, SCR, NCR, UGFT, CEO- the big 7.

Canada Cup would qualify but it's not American.

ECT is a mid-major in my eyes, TFC definitely is, though I hope it grows- it's the event I plan to hit this year.

*looks at thread title*
oh yeah? Romania stronk!! (but not stronk enough for shit-tier SFxT PC netcode)

http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/

also, more importantly, some prices from my ISP:
  • 1 Gbps is ~17 USD/mo
  • 500 Mbps is ~15 USD/mo
  • 100 Mbps and 50 Mbps are 12 and 9 USD/mo respectively
(no landline ISP has data caps since 2006)

and the USA is going the other direction, caps are being introduced. There really needs to be more outrage about this.

Shoutouts to EH only putting coverage of Hypespotting up as the event was finishing.

Nothing from them on the belts for CEO (I'm biased in this obviously) even though it got coverage on SRK and IGN.

Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
i play online only, sadly have no scene here. my style of play is "push buttons". i never study framedata or anything so i play by "feel".

While I'm a huge fan of frame data, you'd be surprized at how far this can get you in fighting games.

Before I even knew what frame data was, I (and many others who don't look at frame data) just get a feel for what works and what doesn't, and are inadvertently learning what puts you at advantage/disadvantage.

Like in SF2/4 if block cr.HK that's done right next to you, then you know you have enough time to counter with a cr.HK of your own (most of the time, depending on the matchup).

So what exactly is Wolverine doing in his Fatal Claw super that makes the giant "X"?

Whatever it is, it's a physical attack as it can be countered. He is probably slashing so fast that the energy is vibrating around him or some shit.

I think it took me 10 minutes to give up trying to fit the Marvel side into canon. I'm willing to bet that the Marvel characters in the MvC series have a universe of their own, though (just like the movie universe, aside from the standard 616).

Does NYC have a Smash scene? If they do, why doesn't NLBC have Smash in the lineup? The FGC seems to be changing its tune with Smash and it seems that the Smash community will go anywhere for a tournament. Also, having Smash helps with more viewers watching the stream.

I know that there was Revival of Melee 7 in Long Island, and Apex is around Jersey, so I can't imagine that there aren't smash people in the area

*grabs popcorn*

I can say the American majors I care about are EVO, SCR, CEO and UFGT. When I say care, I mean I'll remember who wins and anticipate them.

I think this is because they have (or had) their own sense of identity and the rest just blend into each other, even if they are enjoyable to watch.

Outside of America, Canada cup and shadowloo showdown are the ones I look forward to for similar reasons. Maybe VxG for others...

I think at some level Chun players in US and Japan simply gave up. I remember at one point she was branded by Japanese players as a character with no future. This guy apparently didn't get the memo.

And yet you'll probably see a Chun train in Ultra, just like you did in A2 and 3S.

I got the memo and threw it out. I'm also nobody though

Other TOs don't reach out to other scenes? The North Carolina scene begs to differ:

This is an unbelievably arrogant viewpoint.

They are not fun to play. Their mechanics do not lend themselves to my enjoyment. My understanding has nothing to do with it.

Even to watch: They are dull, slow and clunky.

but you're kinda making my point. If a game with 15-20 second rounds, 60%+ combos, ~1-2 second exchanges is dull, slow, and clunky to you, you don't understand it. If you don't find it fun, then fine, but VF is objectively faster than pretty much any other FG.

I mean like other than use them as reference material. I don't one goes into frame data studying it like you would say a school text book or anything.

You probably would if you were working on a CH set-up or making a combo in SF

but for laughs? probably not

Same list for me. CEO in particular has turned into one hell of an entertaining show from a viewer perspective, thanks to the presentation and the international presence. Major or not I don't really care but I look forward to it.

Back in the day; I definitely "studied" Soulcalibur 2's frame data. If you're playing a game competitively with real intentions of going far with it - I don't see why you wouldn't.

Smug strikes me as a player that studies frame data.

I think it's game-dependent, I imagine wayyyy more Soul Calibur players know their frames than Smash players for example.

I think it's game-dependent, I imagine wayyyy more Soul Calibur players know their frames than Smash players for example.

It's the other way around: in Smash, frame data is much less pertinent on a competitive level due to the variability in circumstances induced by percentages, shield decay, light shield, etc.

Studying frame data did give players great insight into developing advanced techniques such as wave shine/shine cancel and expanded how certain attacks are applied - but it's not relevant in terms of the game's quid pro quo.

*edit*

Somehow I read that backwards. My bad.

*edit2*

In that case, I don't think it's game-dependent as much as it's player-dependent. I just don't see any circumstances that are bettered by being ignorant of the data rather than the inverse.

It's fine to say it isn't fun. But saying something is slow or clunky when you have no experience isn't his arrogance, it's your ignorance.

And look enzo, this guy is saying being, "fun to watch", counts for something.

No Final Round? Final Round, CEO, and UFGT mystery game tourneys are by far the most entertaining streams outside of evo for me

VF was slow and clunky until I played it. Tekken was a spazzy slap fighter until I played it. Probably my two favorite fighting games now, along with Soul Calibur. Yay 3D!

Can we please just kill this "X is a major Y isn't a major" conversation now before it takes over the thread? Who gives a shit. Watch the events you want to watch and leave it at that. We'll all keep doing what we do for you guys in the meantime.

Is Jon still using that hairstyle? lol

I haven't been down to NC since TFC, but last I've seen, yes.
