P. Spencer: The biggest request is to bring back Shenmue

Great thing if you consider all the quality software that existed for the Dreamcast. It's a shame that a lot of people missed out on it when it was around.

Superb system in my opinion, I used the built in chat room too at times, like a mini NeoGaf :)

Lack of EA support though :(

Oh no, a potentially fun game that didn't make money for some executive. What a horrible prospect to think about.

It didn't make money for some executive AND it didn't move a significant number of consoles. What justification could they have for making it if it won't be profitable on its own and the "prestige" it brings to the platform bears no tangible fruit? There simply aren't enough people who give a shit for Shenmue 3 to have any benefit to a single platform holder.

To have even a chance at being funded by a platform holder, wouldn't S3 need to have an even lower budget than Shenmue 1 and 2 did? What could possibly be made under those circumstances that would satisfy anyone involved?

Tearaway and Puppeteer sold like shit and were still great games. Backing a potential financial dud isn't unheard of or uncommon.

Do you think both of those games were made knowing they would sell like shit? Do you believe Sony producers had a meeting and came to the conclusion that "Ya know, these are gonna sell like fucking trash but lets fund them out anyway!" ?

Both Shenmue games had massive budgets and didn't sell well enough, Shenmue Online was quietly canceled due to budget and lack of interest, and Shenmue City was shut down after a year because nobody played it. I'm sure this all sounds really appealing to Microsoft, financially. They'll jump right on this. Not to mention if SEGA even wants to do another, when they could just do more Yakuza games.

Shenmue 3, Jet Set Radio 2, Phantom Dust 2. Do it MS.

I am a big Shenmue fan, but I'm afraid it's been too long. A Shenmue on the Xbox or PS2 would have made sense, maybe last gen as well, but now? The gameplay systems of Shenmue would just feel completely outdated at this point. For the game to make sense it would need to be almost completely reimagined from the ground up. I don't see what studio would want to do that and is capable of doing it while doing credit to the Shenmue series.

They don't have any justification. It would be a financial dud but financing duds has happened before and will happen again across all industries. Hell, Platinum Games still gets work despite making bombas. Giving people Shenmue 3 would be for the prestige and goodwill of a few. But it'd be nice for those people who would play and enjoy it.

When push comes to shove, I'm of the belief that Shenmue 3 won't happen, but it's a nice thought. The speculation of "it's happening, not happening" is enough to help me remember how memorable and fun my experiences were with the original games and maybe to revisit them when I have time.

And maybe that's enough. I'm not going to shit on the people who want it though, just as I wouldn't shit on the people who want a Phantom Dust 2 or Half-Life 3 or Yakuza 5 or Final Fantasy Type-0 etc.

I loved Shenmue, but I don't think it would be a financial success today (which is ultimately what it boils down to)

I think SEGA and Sony missed the boat on not getting Shenmue on PSP, I think if they could have improved the load times, when the PSP was selling well in Japan I think it would have done well for the third one.

Still can't believe they didn't do any sort of HD version of I/II on 360/PS3 either...

Crimson Dragon was a game that wouldn't succeed today and they put it out. Heck even KI.

Shenmue 3 being an xbox one exclusive is one of the only things I can think of that would make me choose to get a xbone before a ps4.

KI is a fighting game that's been asked for by fans for years and years, not really something that's a hard sell.

Crimson Dragon was a Xbox 360 arcade game exclusively for kinect ported to the Xbox One and given controller support...not exactly a huge money sink there.

Not at all, i don't see KI being smaller than a Shenmue.

Hahahahahaha what?

Shenmue was a 100 million dollar affair. Do you really think KI came anywhere close to that as a free to play fighter developed by Double Helix?

Did I remember hearing that the code for Shenmue 1 was kind of fucked making an hd remake extremely unlikely? I hope not

Then take the same approach with Shenmue as they did with kI. I dont want the same COD type games all the time, take risks already. Phil said it himself that early in a gen they need to take risks.

Should Shenmue be a free to play game developed by a studio with a sketchy track record who MAYBE will make a good game for a low budget?

People still bring on the production costs as an argument, while actually I think that the production cost would not necessarily be as high as it was back in 2000, because times have changed.

Shenmue I+II were overly ambitious for their time and used cutting edge technology that was expensive.
Today, you can get access to the two most advanced game engines for $20/mo. (I know that is for indies only, but still...). Great asset pipelines and tools, motion capturing and voice acting are common these days.

I don't know. I just don't feel the costs would need to be exorbitant today.

I think that Sony setup this trap to get Microsoft to publish and develop a 100 million dollar shenmue to have them close the division.

All of this is going according to Cerny Keikaku.

just imagine... xbox conference rolls to a close. Phil Spencer thanking the crowd and walking off stage.

then utters "and one more thing".

*shenmue theme comes on"

cue the montage of scenes from shenmue1+2

epic narriation "Ryo Hazuki continues his epic journey in the next installment of the Shenmue seires" fade in of Next Gen Ryo Hazuki set in Hong Kong running around the streets collecting mini capsule toys, and playing old sega classics. Ends with Shenmue 3 logo.

audience goes nuts grown men in tears, with raging boners. the cheering is deafening.

A Shenmue III exclusive with Microsoft would a be similar to a megaton like Bayo 2 on Wii U.

AND it would make me think twice about an X1, so yeah, go for it MS!

I'd buy an Xbone for Shenmue III, gladly. About the only thing that could convince me to shell out cash for the console right about now.

But Shenmue II came out on the OG Xbox and flopped tremendously let's not forget. I actually still own a copy, along with the Dreamcast version as well, so I did my part.

I'm guessing the "biggest request is Shenmue" thing is only because the request to "get your out-of-touch asses into a fucking time machine and redux everything from the design, planning, and marketing stages of the TV/Kinect box" isn't a realistic option.

No one should get their hopes up at this point. Spencer has probably teased 20 games or so that aren't actually happening at this point in time.

I just don't think Shenmue would sell. I think the hardcore online message board crowd would go apeshit as everyone else looked at us in embarrassment. With development costs the way they are, it would be a costly mistake to listen to us.

Make it happen Phil. Bring back the original Xbox glory days. The days when Microsoft took chances with new IP's. It's time to let Rare off the leash and to be all about the games.

Give us sequels to:

Project Gotham Racing
Proper Banjo
Conker
Kameo
Ninety-Nine Nights
Perfect Dark
Blast Corps
Crackdown
Dead or Alive
Lost Odyssey

Age of Empires on PC

Don't ship games until they are ready (i.e. Forza, Dead Rising).

**Do a deal with Sega for MONEY to gain access to some of their awesome IP's like Shenmue and Phantasy Star Online**

haha! that would be like the most fucking impressive E3 ever!

in fact, if this thing ever happens, I guess they will have to burn down the LA convention center and totally move the expo somewhere else, under a new name, because E3 as we know it would have overachieved its purpose in life 8)
