I would leave my house immediatly and go buy a xbox one. No Kidding. And I dislike microsoft a lot

I just discovered some extra cash .. who do I have to throw this at to make Shemnue III happen? Is that kickstarter thing happening yet?

Why would MS, after spending 400 million on NFL, 100 million on the controller, and say 50 million for titanfall, now want to fund a game with a budget of at least 50 million that will sell fewer than 2 million copies? Everyone loves to talk about how much money MS has, but that aren't idiots with it, they aren't just throwing it away

If this: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=789110 is related at all to this thread I will not be a happy camper.

My order of next system purchases is currently PS4 within the next few months, WiiU next year after price cut(s) and then Xone in 2016 (or perhaps never as I had enough trouble keeping up with just a PS3 and Wii and DS/3DS last gen). Shenmue 3 coming (exclusively) to Xone could really f that plan up. If it exists, let it be for both Xone and PS4 (sorry WiiU).

Who's he referring to? The average consumer doesn't care about Shenmue, which is why the franchise is dead. It seems like a waste of resources to fund such an expensive game just to appeal to a handful of forum dwellers and bitter Sega fans.

Not to mention that almost all of their "exclusives" that they had for the 360 got ported to other consoles & handhelds.

They just think that because Microsoft has a ton of money, that it all goes towards the Xbox brand.

Shenmue 3 is something I want bad. To me the ending of Shenmue 2 is top 5 in the history of video game endings. From the start of the roof top until the final scene was just epic. The ending in Shenmue 1 was also epic. And the story just sucked me in. I just want to see the end of this tail. The hand to hand combat is still the best to me in the open world genre.

What with a extremely niche franchise? You cant be serious.

A blow to what? Shenmue 3 is not going to sell anything and it would be extremely expensive, not to mention Sega owns it. It would score them points with certain messageboard posters.

Shenmue 3 wouldn't sell as much on the XBOne as it would on the PS4 though. It's a matter of demographics. See Final Fantasy XIII sales.

These. A franchise like Shenmue is more fitting with the Japanese audience than with the American audience.

Weren't the majority of Shenmue's sales from outside of Japan though?

Also Final Fantasy XIII is a poor comparison. That's a series that's ingrained as a PlayStation franchise, along with things like Metal Gear Solid, Ridge Racer, Tekken etc. Shenmue has never been on a PlayStation console, and has only ever appeared on the Xbox and Dreamcast. I don't necessarily think that the Xbox has more potential buyers for the game than Playstation (in fact, I think if it were released on PS2 that gen, we may have seen Shenmue 3 by now), but Final Fantasy makes no sense to use as an argument here.

KI is a fighting game that's been asked for by fans for years and years, not really something that's a hard sell.

Crimson Dragon was a Xbox 360 arcade game exclusively for kinect ported to the Xbox One and given controller support...not exactly a huge money sink there.

Hahahahahaha what?

Shenmue was a 100 million dollar affair. Do you really think KI came anywhere close to that as a free to play fighter developed by Double Helix?

They funded another dead rising when Capcom had no desire to do so.

So you would rather the game didn't exist rather than it existing but just not on the console you own?.
I'm pretty sure if Shenmue 3 did end up being exclusive to XB1 it would be because Microsoft are funding the game.

It'll be just like it never existed to me because I'm never going to own an Xbox One, so it doesn't make any difference. I'd like for every game ever made to have a PC version, but I know that's not reasonable. Just because third parties will always inevitably make exclusive titles, however, it doesn't mean I have to like it.

Of course. Go ahead. And if you succeed, you will have the internet at your feet and you can ride the popularity wave for awhile until you blunder it all in an extraordinary faux pas.

Also, I've never played Shenmue so could some kind soul explain to me why everyone's gaga for this series

This... Shenmue 3 faithfuls are loud and thus they feel like they are a larger community than they actually are... If Shenmue 3 did release and it didn't sell well, they'd find something to blame for it.

See above. Not a lot of people are gaga for it... It has a very loud niche audience who will stop at nothing to convince you it's the greatest game ever imagined. It's big, it was super expensive to make at the time, but a good portion of the game is just padding around looking in overly detailed houses that don't serve much purpose all to super loud foot step noises.

Crazy If it will be an XBOX Exclusive.

More people played the second game on Xbox than on Dreamcast, and the US market only got the Xbox version of Shenmue II. It would make sense, but this is a game I'd prefer seen on as many platforms as possible. If it's like Bayonetta 2, where it can only exist as a subsidized second-party title, I'll take it.

This is a series I've loved, but I also understand why it's not a viable mass-market title. I understand how the investment in the first games never came close to paying off. That being said, whoever brings a theoretical Shenmue III to market gets my money, whether it means buying a new platform or not.

Lol, no it's not. He sees everyone begging Sony and thinks he can get in on it. Nobody wants MS to make Shenmue.

Question for people who'd like to see this, because I want to know if I'm alone here. More or less, I'd happily accept a new Shenmue title at low production-values. Heck, clean-looking PSP level visuals would make me happy if there was thought put into the story and mechanics.

Am I alone on this? In a weird way, matching the original style, with all its quirks and nightmarish faces intact, might even have some charm to it.

I'll take it.

Yes so big that they didn't make a sequel for a while now due to its sales. It's a niche franchise that people love in websites like gaf and Japan.

But a game is a game. If it had a great story, nice visuals etc etc it could still be successful on its own merit.

Arguably it was niche because it launched on the Dreamcast. It might see bigger success on a more mainstream system like XO.

I think I'd prefer this tbh. The voice needs redoing though.

I don't feel they need to cut this many corners. Even with a 20 million development budget that game would look pretty decent and they'd need to sell just over 500k copies to break even. There are niche titles which have sold well above that (SoTC comes to mind). I think they free marketing they'd get just from it being Shenmue would also be a factor in bringing down the beast which is starting to rival development budgets and that is marketing budgets. Also this game didn't sell 2 copies on the DC. It would have most likely broke even had the DC itself not be a failed platform.

If at E3 they announce :
Shenmue III for Xbox One
The Last Guardian for PS4
Half-Life 3 for Steam OS timed-exclusive
Does NeoGAF crash ? [Edit : Forever. Because it always does crash anyway]

GAF will crash at the first legitimate rumor of any one of those happening. GAF will be down for a month if all of it happens.
