Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

My weapons and armor merchant hasn't updated his stock. Is there something blatant I missed? I'm nearing the end of the game and he has his starting supplies.

armor merchant stocks sets from some of the bosses you have beaten. also unlocks a new set when you spend 1k, and another one when you spend another 15k. You also get a free armor set at this point when you speak to him while having 0 souls on you.

the stone merchant upgrades her stock depending on game progress.

Gavlan when he reaches his final destination.

The old hag sells the set and weapons from the NPCs you have killed.

All other merchants remain the same afaik.

Had a funny experience tonight. I was in I
ron Keep
doing some item mop-up and was getting that item near the first bonfire that's a ways away past a few lava platforms. I'd just gotten the item and was going to homeward bone back to the bonfire when I got invaded. So I just ducked behind the pillar on the platform and watched the invader run around on the bridge for a few minutes trying to find me before giving up.

It was funny.

Until I died trying to get back. Sigh.

i thought it was the pigs making sounds beside the house all the time. but what's really bothering me are the books. we never interact with them and one of those is pretty huge. maybe an entrance for another area in the future.

ENB hinted that he thought it was big enough for a
dragon to read, so maybe it was one of Seaths old books from his library, who knows.

As for the pigs, I doubt it, wouldn't we hear those noises outside the mansion too if that were the case?

So fuck the fucking (late game area)
Shrine of Amana
on NG+. And here I thought this place was bad on NG. This is the absolute worst thing to deal with in the game that's mandatory.

try ranged battle. the whole area becomes trivial.

Any tips on the p
ursuer
fight in the I
ron
K
eep [/spoiler}where you fight the
Smelter demon

I can't cheese him like the first time :(

My weapons scratch him
you have to learn his patterns, he's not that hard. you have a bonfire right next to him. you can do it. or come back later if you feel too weak with your attacks. i killed him with swords, rapiers and greatswords.

yea. maybe it's just from trolling. or the pigs while you're in there.

Get under 70% load, 50% is better, put on ring of blades, cloranthy ring, and bait his charge move, always roll right when he does it, back up/roll away for his 3 hit. Only attack 1-2 times and don't get greedy. Also, if you have pyro flame and flame swathe, you can get him with 1-2 casts as he's spawning. Really though as others have said, it's about learning the attacks and being patient.

The smelter demon wouldn't be so bad if I could summon some help. I know that the one npc can be called but he dies like halfway through leaving me to get slaughtered.

At least he made it to the fight...I summoned him 3 times and he just fell off the ledge leading up to the door every time

Apparently there's a samurai sorcerer that has a chance of spawning in the belfry on NG+? Haven't seen him yet. And killing him counts towards ranking up in the covenant, even though you're not a ghost? Hidden weapon is the only spell I have left and I want to take care of this quickly.

I think you might be talking about this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcnD6G9F3sc

No it turns off after you go into NG+.

Not quite, its still there...it just has a much wider range

I've been having some trouble recently doing invasions on my 14mil SM character

Yeah, I'm farming him for his super sweet equipment on NG. Only got his chest piece left to go. He doesn't appear very reliably (I've had times where he doesn't spawn after ten trips to and from the Bonfire) and you need to be in the Bellbros. He does count though, as do the red phantom bell keeper dwarves.

It's a pretty cool fight too.

I don't know what's the biggest opponent on pvp; the lag or getting greedy during the fight. Lost some matches today because of both. :p

Anyway, managed to get my blacksteel katanas finally. On NG apparently a dex build simply cannot find them, but using a bonfire astetic made the whole difference, so under an hour fooling around on
Iron Keep
i got 4 already.

Just need to find a decent armor for my dual swordsman now. Have no idea where to look. So far the most decent one i found to keep the character light was the grave warden's set. Any clues anyone?

Well that's unfortunate if it is enabled after all. I don't mind it being enabled for the first playthrough, since it does seem to prevent twinks, but it makes very little sense to keep it enabled beyond that.

go as light as possible imo. i have the feeling armor got a heavy nerf in ds2. im using the black set from straid but it requires some INT.

Based on a lot of streams and youtube vids, a lot of Dark Souls 2 players going for melee/physical only are completely botching character builds. VIT is being ignored, END is usually way too low. Weapon usage is misguided, most of the great swords are pretty weak compared to the large/great club, yet people stick to great swords. With the build I have new game + has been a breeze, about to reach Drangelic castle after 13 hours, only skipped Black Gulf thus far.

I have 180 play time on 2 characters and here I am at work desperately waiting to get back to play more. Damn game got its hooks in good.

I have an question: where can I farm twinkeling tint.?
There is a dead body near the 4th bonfire in the forest of fallen giants (
The Place Unbeknownst
) that has 2 twinkling titanites attached to it. When you use Bonfire Ascetic for that specific Bonfire, those twinkling titanites will also re-appear.

Only kicker is that you'll have to
kill the Giant Lord within the memory of Jeigh
if you want to keep burning ascetics for that specific bonfire.
I also remember certain enemies in Shrine of Armana dropped them. The guys in the white robes.
Yes, the Archdrake clerics can drop them, as do the casters that occupy the same area.

Can you become a sinner by pvping? An arbiter/blue sentinel was summoned to my world as I was fighting an invader and I was thinking "wow! it works?" Low and behold, I got a heavy soul arrow to my back by that blue sentinel, lols. I assume I was targetable by him cuz I'm a sinner, but I don't know how I got that since I have not killed a single NPC.

Yes, invading and killing hosts as a red phantom can give you sin.

You can check your sin by going to your character sheet (second option down on the third tab of the main menu).

Clubs are super boring though and greatswords look cool. That's why they're used. It's not all about min/maxing.

END is fine at 20 I think, every level abobe that just adds 1 stamina. VIT should be so high that you can wear all your equip and stay under 50% load. I feel VIT can be neglected if you decide to wear lighter/no armor, since everything kills you in 2-3 hits anyway.

The effects of VIT and END are not immediately noticeable though, and it's not really easy to test the effects. I agree that both are important, but you can be successful with just about any build in DS2.

Ahh I see. In hindsight, my question was rather..obvious. Lol. Thanks for the tips!

Working every covenant to Rank 3 with the special exceptions of B.o.Blood and Blue Sentinels before NG+. Loving the PVP in Iron Keep so far!

i've found two katana in ng playing naturally. i was dying alot there though. you don' t need ng+ for those drops.

i was using black leather armor for most of my gametime. bought from the guy by the hole. good enough while not too heavy. and it doesn't look like shit.

lol. i'm at 110 on one char. need to play more.

btw, i tried doing the bell keeper for hidden weapon yesterday for an hour. i'm lvl 160-170 in ng+ and have no trouble getting summoned every 1-2 min. i just set online play to unrestricted. there are a few laggy players mixed in with shortswords that extend to greatsword range, but i was prepared for that. maybe it's easier to find people on ps3.

Disagree on that. Two handed club attacks are fulfilling, taking off 1500/2000 damage off a boss with one set of attacks is always satisfying, crushing or stun locking any other enemy also never gets old. Looking cool has never been a priority for me when it comes to combat, raw damage is what gets me excited. With my current build I can have a Great club, broadsword, and Dragonslayer Greatbow for right handed attacks, while using a Gyrm Greatshield on the left hand, wearing a medium-heavy armor set and I'm clocked in at 68% encumbrance.

Broadsword +10, Large/Great Club +10, Dragonslayer Greatbow +5 has been one helluva weapon set.

Great Club is one of my favorite weapons and carried me through NG+. Smashing motherfuckas never gets old. And the damage on dat 2h heavy spin attack...

*Boss fight

*Boss does attack, huge opening

"Now you have fucked up"

*Two handed overhead smash, then two handed club swing, 25% of their health is gone

I wish I could play that long. I'm only at 45 hours in Drangleic Castle.

Wait, you played 7-8 hours a day and work? Tell me your secret!! Don't tell me you have a wife and kids.

Lol, single, with flexible working hours and no responsibilities except for taking care of myself.

Yesterday I found out Darklurker really doesn't like spells: soul geyser and soul spears were all I needed to finish him. He didn't hit me once and he didn't even have time to split up. Just a tad smoother compared to melee.

After I get the last spell for the sorcery trophy I'm going to take a break. I'll get the NG++ only spells later. Even though I think II is a very impressive game, it doesn't have the replayability DkS I had. I'm saying this sooner than I'd expected, but it may be time for other games again.

Duke's Freja
is absolutely destroying me

When I keep my distance, the beam kills me, when I get close, the stamps and trash mob kill me :(

No shortcut, correct?

edit: Did a little better just there, keep getting delayed on the way to the
inactive head
by running into
legs and spiders

No shortcut; unless you get over a million soul memory and then go to the
Shrine of Winter

Speaking of which Dark Souls 2 is sorely lacking any
snow
environments.

Started to replay Dark Souls 1.

Yeah, Dark Souls 2 is better. Early on in Dark Souls 2 some areas annoyed me, but the world, combat, weapon variety/scaling, stat scaling, enemy design in both combat and art design are all better in Dark Souls 2. A common criticism that gets thrown at Dark Souls 2 is you can just strafe or roll behind enemies and clobber them, this is true. However, you can do the same exact thing in Dark Souls 1. The rolling in Dark Souls 1 is way too OP, holy shit. The benefits of armor don't beat being able to roll five consecutive times instantly.

I just beat Moonlight Butterfly and the bosses so far aren't as difficult as I remember. If you have a shield with decent stability and decent endurance, you have tons of breathing room. Died once on the gargoyles, beat them the next attempt. Died on moonlight butterfly, beat it the next attempt.

Dark Souls 1 even suffers from "this felt bigger in the past" syndrome. The improvements made in Dark Souls 2 seem subtle at first, but the amount of little or medium sized changes add up pretty quickly.

So I killed
Nashandra, who, other than the curse wisps wasn't terribly hard
Why do I want to kill KV, other than he's there? I have the 3 giant souls and the dragon soul, am I suppose to use them on him somehow?

The
Giant Lord
is also an amazing way to get souls. By your fourth go around you're getting 300k+ souls a run and it takes 5 minutes tops. Magic destroys him.

80 hours in and the Blacksteel Katana still didn't drop lol. I've been using the Washing Pole and enjoying it a lot, though.

There was a recent review in Forbes I think which summed up some of my feelings rather nicely - DKSI can be divided into 3 clear acts,

Act One: The Ringing of the Bells
Act Two: Anor Londo by Way of Sen’s Fortress
Act Three: Get Ye Some Lordvessels and Bring them Hither

Act 1 & Act 2 are kind of amazing - act 3 gets to be a bit of a trudge. Even if some of the individual levels are great - its a bit of a chore to push through.

DKSII flips that around a bit - the first half of the game is good, but a bit 'lackadaisical', but once you open up Drangelic Castle - the game really starts to shine, and in many ways starts to exceed DKSI.

It's sentiments that I agree with quite a bit - I do think that 'Act 1 & 2' from DKSI is some of the best gaming I've done, and is brilliantly designed. But as a whole, I do think I like DKSII more. I could get nitpicky about some of the atmosphere being lost, or a few areas/enemy designs feeling cheap (not difficult-cheap, just dunno...'cheap' -- Mytha the Baneful looks a bit cheap compared to Quelaag in terms of enemy design) - but the last act of the game is so strong that it overshadows these points.

Drangelic Castle, Shrine of Amana, Undead Crypt, Aldias Keep, Dragon Arie, Dragon Shrine are all such stellar levels, I also love Iron Keep - that as a whole they match, if not exceed some of the best areas in DKSI.

While there may be some less than impressive areas (not a big fan of Harvest Valley or Brightstove Cove Tesdolra or whatever) - none of them stink as bad as Lost Izalith or Demon's Ruins. I don't hate them - they just didnt leave much of an impression on me
