Watch_dogs: Wind, Water, light effects - [PS4 version confirmed]

This is one of the most hilarious and saddest threads I've seen in a long time. I believe Ubi knew exactly what they were doing with this 'mishap'; hats off to them. Some posters on this forum are just embarrassing.

The best gaming monitors are LCDs, have you ever heard of motion strobing LCDs? They have better motion resolution than even CRT, the contrast depends on the panel but you could achieve very rich blacks too. This not 2005 anymore, LCD technology have improved significantly the past few years, plasma is dead and OLED has it own share of problems too. Nothing is perfect.
I disagree with you 100% but, of course, opinions can vary. It's all about living with the flaws of each display technology. I simply feel LCD is a dead end that has been over exploited with too much R&D focusing on hiding flaws that can't truly be fixed.

1) Blacks are the most important element of a display. By its very nature it is simply impossible for LCDs to deliver genuinely dark blacks. The type that fades into darkness when in a pitch black room. LCDs require a backlight and that will always prevent this from being possible. As a result, you need to rely on dynamic elements to work around this such as utilizing individually dimmable LED elements. The issue, of course, is that not only is this nothing more than a band aid fix but very few displays make use of this. The trend has been to reduce the number of LED elements used in the display, not decrease them. For PC monitors it's almost unheard of. As a result, there are no modern PC monitors that can produce genuinely dark black. No matter how accurate bright colors may be, the fact that black cannot be properly displayed ruins this aspect of the image for gaming. A lot of games rely on dark imagery and LCDs are not suitable for this type of content. For those that don't mind glowing blacks, that's fine, but then you're not really an elitist when it comes to image quality.

2) Strobing is very interesting and produces excellent motion resolution BUT it has its drawbacks. For one thing, it relies on the source in order to work. If you could achieve these results with any content I would be thrilled, but you cannot. You require a fast, stable frame-rate for this to work properly which means it's basically limited to PCs and with higher end games it becomes much more difficult to maintain. After experimenting with it, I found it supremely interesting, but without the ability to produce such motion across the board regardless of frame-rate, I find it much less so.

So, at best, with a powerful PC you could eliminate motion problems but you still won't achieve good black levels. Good for LCD, maybe, but not good in general.

I do most of my gaming on a Kuro Elite which has its own limitations, but its ability to produce a genuinely dark black without relying on dynamic adjustments makes a world of difference. The use of phosphors also works well with games and helps produce a very smooth image. It's not well suited for desktop work, however, which is where LCD reigns supreme.

So, you're right, nothing IS perfect but LCD is just a waste of everybody's time. Too much money is being spent trying to perfect an imperfect technology instead of focusing on the next big thing. It's infuriating.

People are certainly entitled to enjoy LCDs, but if you're really an enthusiasts and take image quality seriously I find it rather hypocritical to game on an LCD. The PC monitor market is just pathetic right now.

So I was right saying it looked like the PS4 version?

Embarrassing for some (not all) Master Race supporters that can't see both video had closest graphical quality.

THE BEST April's Fools thread EVER!

It's amazing reading this from the first page, seeing many people claiming PC superiority. If only I can see their face when they read that this is actually PS4 footage.

As far as I can tell there was only one person that said something like "the PS4 would melt if it tried to run this". The other comments are just general comments about the superiority of the PC and would likely be the opinion of those people regardless of whether the footage in question was PC or PS4.

Then we get hundreds of comments from people who think this is some kind of massive flip flopping or revelation of bias.

I personally said that I thought it looked excellent, but I also said that the graphical techniques outlined in the video are also in the console versions.

Sorry but l can't believe Ubisoft keep shooting themselves in the foot. We got trolled here and Ubisoft are no doubt having a right old laugh over a glass of red. "We fooled them in thinking it's PC footage ha ha".

Ok, you are totally right. It´s a big aprils fool, the human mankind was never on the moon, Elvis is still alive and actually I am a Marsian. Happy now? XD

Or you have a PC not good enough say?

All this PC superior crap is beyond me, much crow was eaten today by these people and many "true" stance's were outed by this thread.

WatchDogs seems to deliver laugh,Hyperbole and embarrassment in equal measure.

Well, as I said earlier in this thread, it was an interesting psychological experiment. For some gamers it doesn't matter whether the game is graphically superior or not, they just need to 'believe' it is for them to look at it more favourably.

It is the idea of it being superior not the reality of it.

Of course, it looked exactly the same as the Welcome to Chicago trailer. My feelings on the game's visuals remain exactly the same but hey, I have a beanie avatar so fuck my opinion.

I like the way childplease just doubled down on his shtick once it was revealed as the PS4 version. I admire it, friend.

i might be crazy but im pretty sure theres been an interview or 2 where ubisoft promised 60fps on ps4 for ac4.

Not only that a 60fps running version was shown (And I saw this with my own eyes!) but then they stopped talking about it with no word of why....

Edit:

Here is the link to the article with the interview

http://www.vg247.com/2013/09/10/assassins-creed-4-bridging-the-next-gen-divide/

But the main point is below:-

While they’re cagey about what they can and can’t say about next-gen features, certain versions, for example, will show your true name in multiplayer. Streaming elements are also being utilised on the next consoles, and Browne notes the obvious performance improvements: current-gen SKUs will be 30FPS, while the Xbox One and PS4 versions will be 60FPS “at a much higher resolution”.

Haha. This thread feels a bit different now eh? My original statement stands though. I'll pick it up cheap on PC if it doesn't have Uplay. =)

Ok, you are totally right. It´s a big aprils fool, the human mankind was never on the moon, Elvis is still alive and actually I am a Marsian. Happy now? XD

Clever marketing IMHO. It's kinda worked, l mean i'm now interested in seeing the PC version even more.

Did you ever felt bored in those 4,5 hours of playing W_D? Is it more like sandbox (do fun things that are not missions/challenges) experience or simply open world experience? Also is there enough things to do in game (mission variety, side content, mini games...). Tnx in advance :D

I would laugh even harder if Ubi said it all was actually Xbox One footage running at 720p.
It's not as if 720p is inherently ugly. It's when you upscale it on a fixed pixel display that isn't native 1280x720 that it looks like shit.

720p on a native 720p display or a CRT will actually look quite nice with good AA.

Oh this threads twist has been a delightful rolled up newspaper to the noses of the bad bits of the PC elitist crowd.

Watch Dogs really should have been a launch game because in a post Infamous and even Ground Zeroes lighting world, it just isn't pushing many buttons at all. It has too much of a washed out and sparse feel, where its not dense enough to be convincing as a city.

Very well you can remain delusional if you choose but we digress.

This thread is about the new Impressive PC watchdogs video and how much nicer it looks than the console versions.

Anyone else glad they finally opened up about the pc version ?
i think this should be quoted for every page

I was joking. See the smiley at the end there. It's internet for "Ha! this is mildly amusing given the current dicussion".

But please continue to let the butthurt flow. Don't let me stop you.
Ah, so those two posts together were just jokes? Okay. You got me, you're quite the comedian.

Yes. I know all this. Where did I say 720p was ugly? Simply commenting at the perception of certain things when PC is mentioned.

This is a good post to requote... I am laughing...

I definitely wanted to play and see more!!! Just for understanding, the singleplayer part is one thing, with all the story, GTA-esk side-missions, mini games (drinking, chess, AR-games, poker), the other very interesting part is that whole multiplayer-gameplay, which really felt a little bit like Demon´s Souls/Dark Souls, where you can invade other world or being invaded - imagine this in that Watch Dogs hacker scenario! For example, you "invade" another player between his singleplayer missions, if you hack him, he has the chance to stop the hack, but if he fail, he will give you henceforth XP with every player-hack he make! ...and so on. The only chance to stop this is to counter-hack the player who hack you. And guys, this is only one little multiplayer-mode.
The whole game is totally like sandbox/open world, because you always have the possibility to choose your way of gamethrough, which leads you to different situations than your friend had with this game (besides some linear storyline-parts of course).

1080p downscale to 720p in a 720p monitor will look even better ;)

720p didn't look ugly but it did look worst than 1080p.

Anyway, the most impressive thing about this game is the wind interaction.

The wind interaction in Crysis 1 was also very impressive.

I was fine with the unlocked frame rate. Pretty much all open world games I have played on PS3 or PC ran at an unlocked frame rate. When I played Sleeping Dogs on my PC and the frame rate was all over the place. I chose to play it with unlocked frame rate instead of locking it to 30 FPS (in game option btw). Same goes for Red Faction Guerrilla or GTAIV

I knew it. Yuck.

Stutter/ judder has always been undesirable and that is why the vast majority of developers have always capped their games' framerates at 30fps. It's also the entire reason for Nvidia's G-Sync technology to even exist.

Solid 60fps > solid 30fps > fluctuating framerate between 30 and 60fps > fluctuating framerate under 30fps

Can somebody please give me a short recap of what happened here? In a sentence would be enough. Thanks.

- PC effects showcase appeared on German website
- many gaffers claimed this looks great and will never look that way on PS4
- many demanded blood because of apparent downgrades of PC/PS4 version
- video is proven to be running on PS4
- Ubisoft wins award for best April Fools joke of 2014

Video looks good. I like the lighting and the city gives the impression of being alive. Pathfinding of some of the NPCs seems a bit exaggerated, and there doesn't seem to be a large selection of walking animations and body types, but there seems to be enough diversity that it shouldn't be too distracting if there are other things to focus on in the game and if crowds and individuals have believable reactions to the world around them. I did like the animation of the one guy stopping as he noticed something on the ground then stooping to pick it up - but if it happens all the time then it just kills the immersion.

Do we know if rain, smoke and clothing (specifically Aiden's) will be affected by the dynamic wind?

This game has fallen pretty far down my hype list, and I will need to see more gameplay before I am even remotely interested. But I found inFamous a bit too boring and still have some residual desire in playing a sprawling open-world game. Hopefully this won't be delayed again.

I think some of you are going too far with it. Some people may genuinely think this footage looks better than the previous trailers similar to the way some people thought the Welcome to Chicago trailer looked better than the Story Trailer. It's also why some people think there has been a downgrade. The game has a lot of dynamic elements and different footage can give a different impression of the visuals. It doesn't all come down to people getting fooled or being completely biased like some of you seem to think.
