There was a rumor at one point about Ridley being playable. Was that ever a consideration?


Sakurai replied...

I think that would probably be impossible. [laughs] If we had put our best efforts into it, we may have been able to do it. But he might have been a little slow. Would that have been all right? [laughs]

I feel like Ganondorf is the one Sakurai talks about when he says he doesn't want to change someone out of fear that the people who like how that character play won't like the changes. So he's buffing instead of changing how people work. I think he got stuck when he made Ganondorf a clone originally and now feels changing it would make people upset.

I don't think Ganondorf will make any fundamental moveset changes but I can see him trying to differentiate him with move effects, some animations, and a different final smash. I doubt it will be "He was a Falcon clone but now he uses a sword and magic!" It will be "He was a Falcon clone but this kick is real different."

Combine his Falcon moveset with some Zelda moves and we're gold.

Too many parallels to be a coincidence.

I'd prefer if Ganondorf's down special move used his fist instead of his foot. In the air it would be reminiscent of his OOT ground pound, and on the ground it would be a flying Superman punch. That seems more in-character than a Kamen Rider kick.

And fucking RIDLEY is announced.

The crowd goes wild, tears of joy are shed. The TP reveal looks tame compared to this.

Then Nintendo hits them when they're most vulnerable with a hype as fuck Zelda U trailer.

You can keep the aspects of the character while adding magic or a sword. The forward smash can be a stab instead of an elbow drive, the Wizard's Foot could leave a trail of fire that damages foes for a short period, etc.
