Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

Ring of Thorns has a percentage chance to activate, and only if you're hit from the front of your body.

Ring of Thorns +0 is 10% chance that a projectile fires, +1 is 20%, and +2 is 30%. But yeah, definitely don't try to rely on that for damage in PvE.

Not even close, my friend. That area is literally one of the last places in the game.

Edit: My percentages were way the fuck off. They're 30%/50%/70% respectively. My apologies. Still, please don't rely on it for damage in PvE.

Awesome, thanks for all the info!

Beat all the optional bosses, and finally beat the game. Last boss was pretty simple compared to the hell I've gone through fighting everything else. Now just a little bit more mop-up and then on to NG+...nearly a month after the game came out. Not bad, all things considered! This game will keep me occupied for a looooong time.

Here's that video I said I'd post in case any one else doesn't want to fight the enemies leading up to the AD optional boss every time they die:

Video contains optional boss spoilers, obviously.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rukFVcXHQ4

It's 100% consistent
[the only thing I do that is even remotely strategic is the detour at around 30 seconds in. I'm not saying this is some grand strategy or anything.]
until the final stairs leading up to the fog door, and that section is just gonna be whether or not you're skilled at dodging through and/or juking attacks.

Still, assuming you only get damaged in that final area, you'll have most, if not all your resources still intact for the boss itself.

Well, at least Iron Keep is as popular as ever. Got 900k souls easily via co-op and such. Now like lv 253. So glad level up amounts have leveled off now, so each one is only 1000 more then the last. Hopefully with 3 great souls, I can now go get those spells

Apparently I got troll summoned on Iron Keep bridge. Two guys on bride next to an enemy. They bow down to me. Already I'm confused. Next thing I know, I can target the other summon and he back stabs me. Was already low on health too, so that didn't help. Bastard must be summoning people for his friend to kill off with white ring.

IMO the Gutter is like an easier Blighttown, but with no swamp. And Black Gulch is annoying, but it's also really short.

It's also a great Titanite Chunk farming zone prior to unlocking that one npc's infinite stock of them, and I spent so much time there that I actually like it now.

Referring to Gulch, by the way.

Edit: I also have to love The Gutter by default because From implemented an evil idea I had when Dark Souls 1 came out.
Since they gave us the ability to slide down the ladders for no stamina, it's pretty likely that if you're going down a ladder, you're always gonna slide. So I wanted them to have a ladder in the game where if you slid without looking, you slid to your death. They did this in The Gutter. It's not into a black void of instant death, but the drop after sliding off the end of the ladder is high enough that it's highly unlikely you survive unless you had Fall Control, the Cat's Ring, or an armor piece that reduced falling damage on at the time.

Not ashamed to admit I fell for it.

How can I unlock that Npc infinite stock of chunks? I just beat that giant spider prior vengarl... And also my goodness feels good to finally know who/what the fuck is vengarl on our OT title lol.

Unfortunately that shopkeeper doesn't sell infinite chunks until after i beat the final boss.

You can buy infinite chunks from the chick with cleavage after you beat the final boss.

Unlock her by going to Harvest Valley.

Can a secret passage through the wall be activated even though a message is on the floor, directly in front of it ? I keep seeing those "illusory wall" messages everywhere, and every time I try to make it open it doesn't work, and I'm left wondering if it's because I was triggering the message every time I was pressing X.

You can still activate it. Troll messages are everywhere.

for the first time. So many careless deaths to jerks with maces. Thank god no one invaded me. I would have embarrassed myself by swinging a club into a wall and then fat rolling off a ledge.

I do wish these areas were larger. They could feel like a stunning, exhausting trial, but instead they're a brief challenge. It's a missed opportunity.

Not being summoned to the pursuer anymore. On my first guy I was constantly being summoned. Not that i matters, everyone doing that boss is somehow too dumb to live.

I felt that way at first. After doing some death related backtracking, I sorta realized how large they are... it's just at that point you are ready for pretty much anything the game throws at you. Minus the infinite stamina mace golems in the second area thou, fuck them.

Totally agreed. Wish a lot of areas were longer. At least I

length, although going back to it later, even that was really only a few to several minutes from beginning to end once you know what to do and where to go. So I guess longer as far as a first playthrough where you're feeling your way through goes.

Why is everyone who summons for the Pursuer so fucking stupid? It's obnoxious. Do these people not understand the concept of dodging or healing? I know he's tough, but, c'mon, stop YOLOing it and use your head. 3 people, 2 to man the turrets and 1 to be the decoy. Your job is to run around like an idiot and not die. it's worse because nobody is summoning for Pursuer anymore. This isn't Skyrim, that glowing blue sword isn't for show, no that sword will fuck you up.

I'll have to do some careful exploration tomorrow and see what I missed. I guess it's true that many of the areas in Dark Souls 2 are similarly short when you get your head around the enemies that can be avoided and the enemies that need to be killed. I was stupid enough to think I'd solved the mace golems based on two lucky encounters. They proceeded to humiliate me on subsequent runs.

Right. There is always a big difference between a first playthrough and subsequent runs when you're comfortable with the area. But even without speculating about an optimal average length for areas, I think it's generally beneficial for at least one later stage to be the longest, sternest test of skill and endurance in the game.

I have a samsung tv, and i don't think i even got this kind of video quality, even with game mode on.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, no offense. I forgot to apologize for how shitty the quality of the video is since my only means of recording PS3 footage is my smartphone. It can record in 1080p but recording off-screen footage in 1080p just seemed silly to me so I lowered it to 720p.

Yeah, the areas are definitely much shorter than they are in Dark Souls 1. Some areas are literally like 30 seconds long. Ontop of that there is less interconnectivity... its more like a linear string of levels in most cases. The trade off is that there are more unique areas.

Been wasting three hrs dying to ancient dragon. Coop bros who join me run right into most after I begin and walk right into fire. Closest I got was down to his last third of health before getting stomped on.

Because of how easy it is to control that boss's attack pattern while solo, and the fact that bosses scale to the number of players present, this is one of the bosses that a lot of people feel is way easier solo.

Here's what I did: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=106488164&postcount=13668

Just got invaded by a guy wearing butterfly wings and dual-wielding poisoned whips. He kicked my ass and it was hilarious.

FYI, that butterfly wing set has the special effect of just straight up giving you a poisonous aura that affects nearby enemies. So if he had that on, and dual poison whips, then that's a shit ton of poison.

do him solo. far easier.

easiest tactic is to stay at in front of his back legs. he'll only do one of 3 attacks:
-foot stomp. dodge to the other leg and keep hitting.
-belly breath. just run to the outside of the foot and keep hitting.
-air breath. run towards his tail (shadow on the ground).

don't log on. keep your camera so you see his legs and head. you don't need any equipment, so get rid of everything apart from your weapon and a stamina reg shield. with pyromancy's immolation you can get yourself to low hp and use read tear stone ring to shorten the fight.

Is the slumbering dragoncrest ring glitched? Seems to be the same description effect as Dark Souls1, but it definitely does NOT make my movements silent at all.

it supposedly hides the "you are being invaded" message when you gank someone and "Gives you the same spell effect as 'Hush'; enemies won't react to your presence unless you enter their line of sight no matter how heavy the armor is"

I hate to sound like a scrub, but having never played a souls game before whats an easy class to get in to?

class don't matter. you can make any character into anything. Only for min maxing it plays a small role.

"Knight" has decent stats at the beginning with lots of health, a bit of adaptability, vitality and strength.

Really? Shit. Yeah, I didn't stand a chance against that guy. PvP is fun for sure, but my build right now is focused on PvE so when I get invaded I don't really have a chance.

Jumped into NG+. Man, the extra dark spirits definitely add some challenge.

Yeah, I played up through the first boss on NG+, I was hoping some of the items would be different but it seems like it's just the same treasures with extra enemies and some layouts changed...at least in the early game. I hope the later areas are more varied.

Okay, so unlike the other two Souls games [EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, I can't remember if every class started with a shield in Demon's, but they definitely all did in Dark Souls1] where every class starts with a shield (even if some weren't very good shields), Knight is the only class that starts with one in Dark Souls 2. Thankfully, you can get a serviceable shield just a few minutes out of the tutorial for free with some exploration.

Any way, I don't really know how to answer "what's an easy class to get into" because essentially, unless you already know what you're doing in the combat, every class is going to feel equally weak at the start, in my opinion.

So I'll just leave a couple general tips:

1. Until you're used to how combat flows in this game, use a shield, even if you don't want to. Very few shields in the game block 100% of physical damage, but any sort of damage reduction is better than eating a hit at the start when you're unsure what you're doing.

2. During character creation, the game will ask you to pick a "Gift" besides picking your starting class. If you're just starting out I'd say pick Healing Wares. You get a ton of extra healing items to begin with.

3. You may or may not already know, but picking your class in a souls game is nothing more than picking your starting load-out, really, unless you're aiming to stay under a specific level for the purpose of pvp/co-op while still min-maxing the stats that you want.

So you could start as a Cleric and, only a couple hours or so in, be using the same kind of equipment a Knight or Swordsman would be using from the start. Or vice versa.

Hope that helps a bit.

Invading in the Undead Crypt is quite fun!

Haha, nice. I don't need an invader to do that though. I've accidentally rung it several times myself while killing the zombie. Eventually I started kiting it a few feet out first.

I've had quite a few people disconnect on me when doing it, these people must know they get punished for doing so eventually?

Fuck, went into NG+ and forgot to talk to map guy for that trophy. Now I'll need to fight KV again for it. Argh...

it's interesting they patched out the sentinels in DC. those were a pain in the ass and easy to aggro multiple.

i always made sure not to ring the bell before the boss room. then one time i summoned one guy for velstadt in ng+. that dude just walked up and hit the zombie AND the bell like a brute.

I guess that's a reasonable tradeoff, but still kind of surprising that it made it this long and now they decide to change something like that. I wonder what kind of meta-data their servers collect. It would be fascinating to see. I imagine they sift through it for things that may seem too hard or too easy from their original intention and tweak things from time to time. It would be awesome if they released a death heat-map like Valve has done with some of their first party games.
