Games you remember, names you don't

This was an arcade game, that i feel like had TIME in the name of it

it was like a vertical scroller

ikari warriors
style
but you would start in a random point in history
and go up

you could either continue up and eventually face the boss of that point in history
or take a portal to another random point
you could fight dinosaurs
roman gladiators
Time Soliders, natch.

It appears I may have done you an injustice sir!

Upon further investigation I believe it was in fact Bujingai: The Forsaken City!

I reckon I missed that title amongst the others in my first search, but upon closer inspection I think that's it. I also think I was mis-recalling the gun for the character's magic attack (thus making the gameplay feel similar to Crimson Sea 2 when you swap out gun attack for fireball etc).

Thank You! Gold stars all round.

Ah, glad I could help. :)

Hold on a second, just realized it might be Disgaea. Haven't really played the series but I think you can stack party members on top of each other while combining attacks and such and the whole story revolves around demons and vampires.

Nope, not that either.

I'll just quote my original post in case someone is curious:

Somebody told me about a game I don't seem to recognize. Apparently it featured the playable character saving someone from vampires. It may have been a coop game and the characters were able to ride on each other's back somehow (which is probably the essential thing here). They weren't sure about the platform, but they saw the game being played in early '00s. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

So far we've determined that it isn't Disgaea or Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi and it's probably not Maximo, either.

If someone actually knows this I'll be amazed. It's an old C64 game, unfortunately I don't remember much about it, just some probably distorted childhood memories. You were a regular dude walking around a city, through the streets, you could jump, I think. It had a side scrolling viewpoint. The name may have had the word "days" somewhere in there. I remember it being quirky, somehow.

Could be The Happiest Days of Your Life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnScDnhsDao

Battle of Olympus?
So a green, fantasy, sidescroller? That's not a great deal of info to go on. As a wild'n'crazy guess, given the first level is greenish, it has good gameplay, and the title's a bit unconventional: Little Nemo: The Dream Master?
No and no, sadly. Faxanadu was another one that I tried, but at this point I think that my memory is so rusty that even if I found the actual game, I wouldn't recognize it.

Alright, I'll try to be as detailed as possible but there's not a lot to go on here.

-Arcade game
-Shmup
-Vertical scrolling
-You're a ship of some kind
-All 2D, no polygons in sight
-Had a long/confusing name
-The name wasn't an English word, though it was written in English
-You shot out a large stream of bullets

I actually wrote down the name of the game on a slip of paper after I played it because I liked it so much, but I lost the paper a long time ago and that arcade is also long gone.

I know the description sounds like 75% of shmups out there, but hopefully the name thing helps.

Can you vaguely say how old this game probably was? Would maybe help.
Only thing I could come up with is maybe DoDonPachi or one of its sequels (like DoDonPachi Daioujou, which seems like it would be something hard to remember).

I remember a PS1 game my roommate had. It was most likely an RPG.

I remember walking around the town in beginning of the game and in the middle of the town, there was this huge crystal or statue that looked like a crystal.

And the music was very nice. I cannot remember the game, though.

It looked like it was probably from the mid to late 90s maybe. I also believe the name was one word but I'm not 100% sure.

Looking at vids of those DoDonPachi games, the game I'm thinking of was more colorful, but you did shoot a large ass stream from your ship like that.

Also, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Cave shooter. I remember looking at the publisher and never having heard of them, but I'm pretty sure I knew who Cave was even then.

EDIT: Oh, and yeah, there weren't any space levels that I could see, though I'm pretty sure I only made it two or three levels in.

Single-word titles that fit that bill:

Donpachi
Batsugun
Mushihimesama

Given the length, I'm thinking it could be Mushihimesama

Sorry guys, I fucked up. You're not a ship. But all your suggestions put me on the right track PLUS introduced me to a bunch of awesome looking shmups (gonna have to import me some Saturn and PS2 games now).

Espgaluda was the game.

Here are some NES games you could check out:
-Chester Field
-Legacy of the Wizard
-The Legend of Prince Valiant (very green indeed)
-Little Samson
-Romancia: Dragon Slayer Jr.
-Rygar
-Sword Master
-IronSword: Wizards & Warriors II
-Wizards & Warriors III
-Zombie Hunter
-Holy Diver
-Kick Master
-Dragon Fighter
-Astyanax
-Castle of Deceit
-Castle of Dragon

It's a long list and there are probably more NES games that fit the description, but you can check them out.

I played an RPG at a cousin's house a few months ago, and for some reason neither of us can remember the name ( He deleted it a few days later).

It was a fairly recent party-based, top-down RPG.

(I only played a little of the beginning of the game)

I remember that we controlled a group with pre-set personalities and dialogue.

One of the characters of that group looked exactly like a sphinx.

The group had one rogueish/thief character.

The game's first enemies were guards.

I think we had to recover some artifact or something. We were under the orders of an organization.

That's all I can remember.

Trying to remember a computer game my friend had back in the 90s.

Think it was Mickey mouse climbing a mountain to grab a flag or something at the very top.

Yes! I used to play the shit out of this demo for PS1 as a kid but i cant remember the game. It had a little kid with pink hair beating up pigs. :lol

Oh yes! I refuse to play it again, because I had such a great time playing it as a kid. Why ruin a perfect memory?

Sounds like Aarklash Legacy, though if by Sphinx you mean a sort of Anubis looking character.

Underrated little game, surprised at how under the radar it has flown.

Ahh yes, that's exactly it, thanks. Don't really know why but the game just stuck to the back of my head. Definitely going to get this if and when it goes on sale.

Unfortunate timing: It was on sale just two weeks ago on GoG (part of their St. Patricks Day promotion)

Thanks for the list, I'm going to check these out. Actually, maybe the game was not a side scroller: it could have been a game with a bird's-eye view, similar to Zelda, but REALLY buggy, like you enter in different screens and get locked in rocks or something.

This has been driving me up the wall for at least a decade.

This game is a PC game released in the mid-90s, no later than 1997 but probably more like 95.

I remember almost nothing specific of the gameplay. There are balls that you move around these pedestals that might inflate and deflate them. One thing I remember distinctly was that you could make them overinflate and they would shatter like glass. I spent a lot of time playing this by myself so I would guess that it's a puzzle game.

Any ideas?

Could it have been a point & click adventure with a puzzle like that or was the inflating balls the core mechanic of the game (as in having various levels with the same inflating mechanic)? Can you remember something about the perspective of the game, completely top-down, isometric etc? Something about the graphics, were they maybe pre-rendered or more 2D pixel art? Also, do you remember playing it in DOS or Windows?

It sounds a bit like Airball, but that came out quite a bit earlier (late 80's).

Well let me think.

It was isometric. Probably DOS because I was on '95. I can't remember what the backgrounds were but it was on the prerendered side of things. Definitely not sprites and the graphics were not explicitly polygonal.

I am certain it was not a part of a larger game. Having various sized balls that changed in size that you had to do... something with was the whole game. There may or may not have been hotseat.

Hello all. This is my first post here on the Gaf.

There's one game I saw only once in my life in the arcades and my memory on it is very fuzzy but I'll do my best to describe this game. I'm partially thinking I might have dreamt this game up and, if so, maybe I should have been a game designer.

-Arcade game
-I keep thinking the name was something like Troll race or Troll dash
-I saw it at Golden Gate Lanes in El Cerrito, CA before it was destroyed and became a Target
-The game featured a fantasy land that had all the racers start on the left part of the screen and the point was to make it to the end of the race avoiding traps, tornados and other obstacles. The characters were running, not driving any vehicles.
-I believe the arcade cabinet could have more than two players but I could be mistaken.
-As you can figure from the title, the characters were trolls, gnomes or something like that.
-It was only at GG Lanes for a week or two before it was gone and never seen again.

Hope someone knows of this one. I'm just hoping I didn't dream it up.

Hi facelike, welcome to GAF. :)

I looked around a bit and it seems the game might be Mystic Marathon. Looks like the game is pretty rare indeed.

Found a game called Colony that has been ported and remade on various platforms over the years but I can't find any videos to check out the actual gameplay. Probably not the game you're looking for but it's worth a shot.

NES. Coop shmup. Men in space suits/jet packs instead of ships. Post apocalyptic setting. Lots of destroyed buildings in the background. Scrolls horizontally but I remember sections in the first stage when a tall building is reached then the screen scaled up the top then over the building and down. I think the suits were upgradable. Very reminiscent of Capcom's Forgotten Worlds. Actually I initially thought it was the same game, but later realized FW wasn't released on the nes.

Help?

The setting isn't exactly a match since it's quite abstract but gameplay this seems to possibly fit the best?

Good guess, but that's not it.

YES!

Oh man, the intro alone gave me shivers. So many good memories relived. Thank you!

The game I am looking for is some kind of first person shooter in cyberspace.

What I remember:

- ca. 1995
- you were fighting in some kind of virtual reality, the demo level was set in some kind of church
- when you died you saw your character lying dead in a chair, bleeding
- the resolution was low in motion, but switched to SVGA (?) when you didn't move

I got that thing running on my 386, at 3 fps or so.

Check out CyberMage, Quantum Gate, Forbes Corporate Warrior.

Been looking for this for a while:

- Shareware game
- I played a demo version with just 1 level
- Snake-like gameplay, where you go through levels collecting mini-you's to form a long chain of creatures
- I remember the creatures being stuck in cages
- Top down perspective

It's not much, but it's been so long :P

I assume we're talking PC (but let me know if not). Do you recall if it ran in DOS or Windows? And if Windows, pre-or-post 95?
