Predictions today

- First look at menu/UI outside of battle
- Wii U/3DS differences
- New trailer with two newcomers, Pac-Man and Chrom
- Revised Final Smashes

If Nintendo can get this game out by Summer, then I think they'll have some pretty decent momentum for the year after MK8. They can't afford to keep going x amount of months without a big release.

Plus Iwata said that Mario Kart 8's momentum won't be wasted.
Incoming please understand.

Okay this has been bouncing around in my head for the past few days so I'm going to straight up predict it:

Mii is going to be confirmed today. His reveal trailer is going to start as a live action skit featuring Iwata, Reggie, and Miyamoto. They chat about something Smash related (possibly about fan demand to make them playable, arguing over which of them should get the slot), but then at some point they get sucked into a 3DS and/or Wii U Gamepad, and wind up on a Smash Bros stage in Mii form. Then the character gets properly revealed.

This feels like a very Nintendo move to me, and also would add context to Reggie's semi-recent "do you want me in Smash Bros" tweet.

Mii might sound like a lot of fun to people, and maybe I'll even love it if/when it's announced... but right now, to me personally, it sounds like the most boring character idea since Wii Fit Trainer (which also seemed bonkers to me...)

If mii is the custom stage of fighters he could be interesting. Hat affects Up B, Shirt affects neutral B. Accessory affects Side B, Shoes affect Down B. Weapon affects A Moves. Moves could be totally unique, or borrow from existing smash characters. I dunno.
Conversely, equipment could affect stats (Speed vs strength vs defense), whereas weapons could affect moves, and B moves are just assigned passively and unaffected by appearance. All of the moves and equipment need to be unlocked like stickers were in smash brawl. Could be really fun, overpowered whatever, but still fun. In that sense, they'd be a lot of fun and not so boring. If it's just 'mii with random sports/pilotwings moves' then that would be pretty boring.

Are these directs posted in the eshop immediately after/at all?

I wonder if the 3ds eshop one will be viewable in 3d where applicable.

I also wonder if there will be a 60fps version stored somewhere.

That's what I was thinking as well.

Actually, I'm expecting something akin to the Mii in Mario Tennis Open :

- using special clothes, you can play as any Smash characters
- a bit like Kirby, except you can use all the character's attacks, not just the Smash attacks.

It would also work as Mii's intro video, as the other newcomers have had.

I'm hoping for a summer release, fall/winter is so far away :(

Yes, I hope so too. :(

Well... I dunno. I find that Wii Fit Trainer, Zelda, Rosalina and Peach, we already got quite a bit of Life already. But what about Hometown?

Peach is nothing but Hometown.

Release period? They better fucking mean release month (and not season) and then we get the actual date at E3. This is crazy.

Come on guys, either one would be great! Although, a female FE rep would be cool too, since we haven't had one yet. And she'd be one of the only women in the game who doesn't a) fight with a frying pan (I guess Peach belongs in the kitchen?...) or b) wear skintight clothing (ZSS and Wii Fit Trainer).

...

Did you completely forget about Rosalina and Zelda? And belongs in the kitchen? Seriously dude?

No, didn't forget, that's why I said one of the only, not the only. And my comment about the kitchen wasn't saying that's where I think she belongs, it's just an unfortunate implication of the weapon selection Nintendo gave her - Mario shoots fireballs and Peach has a cooking utensil.

It's such a trivial and non-offensive matter that it hardly merits a mention, I'm mostly pointing out the contrast to say how it would just be cool to see someone like Lucina who dresses appropriately for battle and wouldn't (presumably) have any feminine stereotypes foisted on her.

You're right. Female Marth in every way would be better than Chrom.

Because a 2nd Male Ike is any better?

Lucina, come to us!

But seriously like someone else said, her design is great and would add variety to the cast, and the more agile sword characters there are, the happier I am.

Nah, official facebook is updating their content still pushing the 2014 date. And while I'd completely understand, the investors most definitely WON'T.

Yup the game seems far enough along for them to get it out this year, if anything needs to be added they can add it as Free DLC or paid DLC. WiiU cant afford to have this game delayed to 2015, adding polish and balance should not take another year, more content can maybe, but you can always add that stuff post launch.

Hmm..that'd be interesting.

Chrom was so bland tho.

at least Ike had the raw power to make him unique. Chrom would pretty much be Marth with a better cape.

They had to understand repeatedly with Brawl, and that had a set-in-stone release date.

In fairness, the delay announcements were within 2 months of the release dates. To make a delay announcement with 9 months left in the year would mean that the game is next to completely broken and needs to be redone from the ground up

Not arguing at all, but I have a different opinion - while that would be fun, I feel like casual players (that's me) would rather play as characters they recognize than the kind of generic cartoony Miis, and something like this could probably never get used in competitive play because of the potential for being completely broken and overpowered, right?

Still, more variety is better and if I don't like it, I don't have to play it, etc. etc. I'm just wondering who this is for as it doesn't seem a great fit for casuals or tournament level play.

The roster for this game was probably finalized well before FE:A was a success.

But it wouldn't have been too big a stretch for them to assume it would be succesful, right? And they included new FE reps in each Smash previously (if I remember right...) so it seems likely they'd include a new one from Awakening - to me at least.

Chrom was so bland tho.

But it's such a great cape.

If a casual player enjoyed a Wii ____ game, then the Mii IS a character they recognize. It's not like the Mii is generic and unrecognizable. It's got a very nice "clean" aesthetic that I never fully appreciated til the 360's avatars provided such a nice benchmark of eye-gouging horror.

Mii is a very distinct, well known Nintendo character. The fact that you can customize it to look like whatever doesn't mean it's generic. Miis have a very distinct look to them, and even if their faces vary widely, you can always tell if it's a Mii or not, sometimes even just by seeing a Mii face (despite it being custom)

Have we heard anything about whether or not both versions will be released simultaneously?

If Mii makes it into the roster, I suppose he'll just a Wii Sports/Wii Party inspired moveset I guess?

There are also the 3DS street pass games to draw inspiration from. Adds the option for swords, magic, puzzles, flowers, armies, and guns to the mix.
Maybe Wii Play will also come in to play, like cow riding, or summoning a tank as a final smash.

FE.A was a sucess as early as may 2012 since it sold a lot in japan. i have a hard time believing teh final roster was decided that far back.

Wasn't the Brawl timeline shown that the roster (minus Sonic) was done like 2 years before the first trailer?

But it wouldn't have been too big a stretch for them to assume it would be succesful, right?
Didn't they have an ultimatum that if the game bombed FE as a series was dead?

That doesn't seem like a company that is confident of sales.

Oh, my bad.

But still, Peach's weapon choice was a clear homage to Super Mario RPG. It wasn't an arbitrary decision. I just don't like the implication that Lucina is somehow more deserving than female characters like Peach or ZSS/WFT.

Just to be clear - I'm not trash-talking Miis (they're super cute and making them for myself, my friends, or to resemble celebrities or just look super weird is a ton of fun) or the idea of a playable one at all, it just doesn't sound like something I would enjoy. It looks like I'm alone in that, which is totally fine.

Quote from Cave Story or Meat Boy in Smash would be the best totally unlikely crazy ass thing ever to happen

Miis are ugly and unutilized, barely any additional customization since their original iteration on the Wii. All the clothing you have to choose from is shirt color!
If they want a customizable character, do it to Villager. /imo

If Pacman gets in, would he be the weird looking 3D version or a sprite ala Game & Watch?

There is absolutely no way they don't use Smash as a system seller and release it in the holiday block.

It'll probably be a holiday release, but I wouldn't say there's no way. Their schedules so god damn barren, I could see them releasing Smash in the late summer.
