The only problem with it being a holiday release is that Nintendo would have nothing else between now and Winter for Wii U (Yoshi Yarn?)
Why do people keep saying this? We've seen many times before where Nintendo announces key holiday titles at E3. One that immediately comes to mind is DKCR, released for Wii the November of the year it was announced at E3.

I hope for three newcomers (Palutena, Mii, Dixie Kong) and a veteran, infos on the "story" mode, and random vids about game mechanics.

It's been a while since he mentioned those customization features, hope that comes up actually. He had a weird excuse for no costumes in Brawl, but then he had a weird excuse for no Villager in Brawl too.

I think it's called a "joke". You know, like all the people who seriously think Ridley or Shulk will be in the game.

Why is Shulk so unlikely? He's a first party character from a new Nintendo IP (That's getting a sequel, or at least spiritual successor in the form of X) and from what I understand he's very popular in Japan

It's marketing but not marketing like TV ads, etc. with a firm release date.

To be fair, the marketing they're doing is pretty squarely aimed at the existing audience, preaching to the choir, if you will... it would be great to see some wider-reaching advertising, TV, Hulu, Youtube, that sort of thing?

MasterBalls just does that. It's about personal amusement, not realism.

Right, but what about April/May/June/July/September/October?
Hyrule Warriors is supposed to come out this summer, right? And Bayonetta might be a summer title, as well. And who knows what's up with X and Yarn Yoshi. As for fall onwards, again I point to E3 2010, where Kirby's Epic Yarn was announced and came out that September (iirc), and DKCR was announced for that November. A lot can happen in the coming months. We don't have all of the information and we don't know the full picture.

Yeah, we saw how that worked with SM3DW. Unless Nintendo is able to keep a good flow of games and the momentum after MK8 nothing is a system seller. MK8 has a great mindset and produced hype. If that is transformed just in a sales peak at the end of May and nothing until November, Nintendo won't have too many income sources this year.

I think momentum is really important too, I'm really hoping some new titles get announced at E3 with release dates in the near future.

I can't for the life of me understand why 3DW and DKC didn't sell better...

Nintendo has like twelve announced titles that have yet to receive a date. They aren't betting the fate of the Wii U on Smash alone.

That's why, if this is not July-August, I see no point in doing a SSB direct now rather than doing one focused on the games in June-August. I still hope that this is the right choice and they do a special SSB direct now because it will come in June-August.

3dw sold quite well, given the situation, but DKC was clearly limited by the fact there were no notable releases 2 month before and 2 months after it.

I thought they both sold pretty well considering the install base right? 3DW hit 2 million didn't it? and Tropical Freeze did pretty well in North America for the February NPDs and it was only out for 8 days. I think it did around 130k in 8 days.

Who wins?
Me
We all do.

Although since I legitimately like her music (from the late '90s through mid-2000s, at least -- she jumped the shark after that), I'd voice a preference for Alizée.

Now then, let's all hold hands and follow the Techno Viking to the promised land of Ridley and rainbows.

My personal hopes

- Customisation options announced
- Download play confirmed for 3DS
- One of Hades/Dillon/Tom Nook/Pangoro is announced (I acknowledge these are ridiculous, my avatar shall remain intact)
- Snake isn't confirmed (Boo Snake. Go away Snake.)

Most of what? Grow in what way exactly? Sell more? If so then grow from what?

Sell shit loads of Wii Us, to put it bluntly.

I think it's a summer release as well. There is way to much slated for release this year to waste hype on a game we won't see for six months. I'm thinking they will say "Summer", aim for June and hit July.

Mhmm. We're already getting daily information (no matter how small) on the game. To have a random Direct months away would be weird. But also, Nintendo do weird things. Basically I don't know. Might be June, might be Q1 2015. Who knows.

What's Plan B for chat if (when) the NeoGAF servers start croaking? The NeoGAF Steam chat, some Twitch channel?

Yeah, exactly. I have to expect that leading up to the actual release of the game, for 1-2 months, there will be a media blowout. Same with MK8 hopefully.

Hey, don't count out Pangoro -- this Smash Bros. has been JoJo as f@#$, so it's quite possible the most bancho of Pokémon will be made playable!

Honestly, though, if they could find a way to make Yveltal playable... Or Carbink...

Can't disagree with that. I could not even make up a reason that would make their current Marketing/PR decisions make sense.

I think it would be better for both Bayo 2 and X to be released after MK 8 and SSB 4 and maximize the possible audience.

Mii might sound like a lot of fun to people, and maybe I'll even love it if/when it's announced... but right now, to me personally, it sounds like the most boring character idea since Wii Fit Trainer (which also seemed bonkers to me...)
I mean I don't necessarily disagree, but between the two or three Mii stages and the E3, he's essentially the very definition of a lock. And if there's character customization, what better showcase character than the Mii? And if you want to explain something complex like customization, a direct seems to be the place to do it.

It would be great for me if it came out in June.
I doubt it will happen as we're so close.. but a "summer" date would be nice.
Considering how good it looked at E3, they can't be too far away a year later... can they?

I could see it working either way. If Bayo and X release before Smash, for example, they might be able to "maximize" the core, which then serve as ambassadors to the mainstream.
