Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

I wanna comment on the Direct but everything was awesome not sure what to say.
  • Finally I don't need to have one less special as Sheik. Also now I can give thought to ZSS.
  • Didn't expect Greninja at all, thought he was Mewtwo. Even after the shuriken was shown I thought it was Takamaru for a split second.
  • Customization is so awesome, way bigger than I wished. I really don't want Mii now at all.
  • The substitute looks so awesome, it's cute when Sakurai used the plushy in the Direct.
  • The Ridley troll is taking it a bit too far, even the trophy with the Ridley theme.
  • For fun!
Really excited now. Also the fact that 3DS version comes out first is awesome since I don't have a Wii U.

I thought the heels were really stupid in Other M, but the way they are designed here they seem like they could be more practical in aiding in Samus' jumping and landing ability in a similar vain to the long fall boots from Portal:

Rather than being part of the Zero Suit they are strapped to it and they look like they'd cushion her falls better and add some spring to her jumps.
This makes me wish she would wear a tanktop and ditch the terrible upper part of the zero suit.

Before we get started, GO HERE and install the Firefox/Chrome add-on to make WebM files embedded

Install the add-on for whatever browser you're using. Mac users, use this. It won't embed WebM files.

What are WebM files?
It is a video format that is made by Google to be patent free and is HTML5 friendly. The reason I am using it is because it allows for a higher quality animated stuff in posts compared to a GIF at a much lower file size. It also allows you to pause and control play speed which would make it easier to analyze.

NOTE: It is CPU intensive, so don't enable auto-load.

To view this post more easier, click here.

Now lets get started.

A Wild Greninja Appears
http://a.pomf.se/xoamuk.webm
It is the final evolution form of the water starter from the Gen 6 Pokémon games, Pokémon XY. It is pretty badass (according to me) and can be said to be the most popular starter from Gen 6.

Greninja Uses Jabs
http://a.pomf.se/xjnthn.webm
This is its Neutral A going into jabs and then to the finisher at the end. A lot of its attacks has water based properties.
/captainobvious

Greninja Uses Bounce
http://a.pomf.se/fkqjke.webm
The first move (Bounce) is its Down Air while the triple kick afterwards is its Back Air.

Greninja Uses Low Sweep
http://a.pomf.se/cdcmgc.webm
Look at dat slickness. That is its Dash Attack. Too bad it didn't see Charizard's tail coming.

Greninja Uses Whirpool
http://a.pomf.se/xphxcj.webm
It is doing its Grab Attack in the beginning and then its Up Throw. Then it uses a water whip of some sort as its Forward Air or its Neutral Air. I think its tongue should be used as a whip lol.

Greninja Uses Water Slash
http://a.pomf.se/zjnvax.webm
The first kick it does there is its Side Tilt and the water slash it does after is its Side Smash. Also, this takes place on the Pokemon stage for the Wii U which is one of the Elite 4 rooms in Pokxémon XY.

Greninja Uses Water Cross Blades
http://a.pomf.se/qumksh.webm
That attacks is its Up Smash. They look like mini katanas which is pretty cool.

Greninja Uses Water Shuriken
http://a.pomf.se/dosotu.webm http://a.pomf.se/eacobe.webm
The move here is its Neutral Special. As shown above, it can be used immediately or become charged. I imagine you would be able to save that charged up water shuriken for later. Fun fact: this is one of the signature/exclusive moves of Greninja in Pokémon XY.

Greninja Uses Quick Attack
http://a.pomf.se/pfnjbv.webm
This attack seems to be its Side Special. It most likely behaves similarly to Meta Knight's Down Special where it would disappear and then reappear.

Greninja Uses Aqua Jet
http://a.pomf.se/jgkeht.webm
This move seems to be its Up Special. It moves in a zig-zag way. Maybe it is fixed, or maybe it will act like Pikachu's Up Special, Agility. We'll find out soon enough.

Greninja Uses Substitute
http://a.pomf.se/cqnqoz.webm
This move is a counter move that behaves in a similar way to Lucario's counter move in Brawl. It is most likely its Down Special.
No one would use Substitute on a Greninja. /rant

Greninja Uses Night Slash
http://a.pomf.se/kahyfc.webm
You may not know it, but Greninja is actually a Dark-type as well! And this Final Smash shows it. The moon and darkness looks really cool.

That's All
http://a.pomf.se/czqjoe.webm
That's all....wait, you can stand on that?

Pretty straight forward.

Thanks to people on the IRC for helping me come up with names and identifying moves.

Is it possible to do audio as well? You know...that villager song, I really want that. Plz?

But you're not going to get good sitting out and watching other people play, you get good by playing. Smash isn't the kind of game you go home and practice so you can beat your friends in a 4 player FFA, it's meant to be a fun time game.

And I'd say part of the fun/challenge of a time match is keeping an eye on who is getting kills and who is high/low on %. If you only go after one player the whole match and you lose because the other guy killed the last player faster/more times then you maybe you should have targeted him instead.

There's also no guilt when you attack the guy in last who has only 1 stock left while everyone else still has 2-3+. This always pisses me off because it's a no win situation, either the guy just avoids battles until he accidentally gets finished or until someone else gets to 1 stock left. Or you pick on and eliminate that 1 stock person first and then they have to sit out for 2-4 minutes while everyone else finishes the match.
I guess a lot just comes down to preference. FFAs aren't that serious yeah, but you're still playing a game against other people with a win/loss condition. To me that just naturally forces it to become a competitive exercise, even in situations where I'm not good enough to compete. Some times the more fun option is to do unexpected/risky stuff for laughs, but it's still largely competitive.

You're definitely right in the second paragraph. It bothers me knowing I can be beaten without getting hit. But what you said is an accurate refutation of my comment before; it's not like you lack control. You can influence everything in the game, not restrict yourself to one scenario. I prefer having more control over where I stand, but I see where you're coming from.

In that last scenario, what's wrong with just avoiding the battle? It isn't easy or boring. People will come after you, and you'll have to struggle for your life. Situations like that always dangle the reward right in front of you; if you come back from it, it will be impressive and exciting. You can also look for your opportunities for aggression while at 1 stock. It's not like you're out of the game. I guess I just haven't encountered the situation enough to be frustrated with it. When I occasionally do, I just shrug if off and think "eh, (I/he/she) should have played better".

For what it's worth, I don't see why they'd pick on the one stock player, unless that player was generally a big threat anyway.

But yeah, I do see where you're coming from with it. The motivation and higher reward for winning just make stock mode more fun to me. I can agree to disagree though.

Where was the Ridley tease? I don't remember anything like that.
They showed Ridley's shadow in the Metroid stage when specifically mentioning boss characters.

It's obviously a boss/stage hazard and not a playable character. I don't know why people still think there's hope for playable Ridley.

In Japan. Roy's FE never came out outside of J.

Oh ok, thanks!

Where the hell is Captain Falcon?

I'm getting really nervous he won't be in this game.....

Well, if I can make some assumptions based off this Direct, Captain should be fine since Yoshi, ZSS, and Sheik have survived the axe (oh man, Sakurai with the ZSS removal joke though =S ). Whether there's a reason for his being held back might be interesting for speculation. Should we expect something similar to this Direct at E3, where a few vets are revealed along with a new character? Or is Sakurai holding them back to pad the few remaining months between now and the 3ds release? Or (and my favourite proposal =3 ), is Sakurai holding them back because Nintendo has bigger reveals planned for the Captain, Ness, and Falco?

I feel conflicted about Greninja..I thought he was Mewtwo at first before I saw the water attack :/. He looks interesting though..just need to warm up to him

One thing I feel the need to point out while rewatching the direct is, for all the mystery and delay Yoshi got... he doesn't really look that different outside of the way he stands. Bowser looked way different at E3 in that developer video and even got more time shown to why he was better then Yoshi got in this. I thought we were going to see some kind of crazy changes to Yoshi's moveset or some "look at how powerful he is now because of these changes" but we didn't. We just got mostly the same old Yoshi bag of tricks (flutter kick, egg throw, eat into an egg of the edge)

I don't know about you guys, but I'm talking that Ridley teasing as a sure sign he's playable. If Ridley indeed turned out to not be a playable character again, then why wouldn't Sakurai just come out and say it, like he did with Waluigi? Let's say this is the case and Ridley is solely a stage hazard for the Metroid Stage. Why not simply say it right when the stage was revealed just so fan's didn't get their hopes up? It wouldn't make sense to pull fans along with teases, such as this, only to lead to disappointment.

Yes. During the "Who's that character?" part of it, they play Ridley's theme, and as they reveal it as King Kihunter, they switch to the victory jingle for Samus.

However, I still believe that those 4 trophies were not coincidentally chosen. I think they are hints.

1) I'm fairly certain Waluigi was using the Mario 'shroom, but I could be wrong.
2) Nintendogs have a stage. Every franchise that has a stage or playable character gets an icon. You will see that Balloon Fight has an icon as well, as it has a stage. Pilot Wings has a stage too. This was the same in Brawl - there was nothing revolving around the Hanenbow series, but it had an icon. Animal Crossing only had a stage, no playble, and got its leaf icon as well.

1) Never doubted Wario for a second. I wonder why Waluigi has the Wario symbol though, he's never been in a Wario game aside from a WarioWare microgame cameo
2) Nintendogs also has a stage. That's probably why it has its own icon

Ah,thanks.
And yeah, Waluigi used the Wario icon. I'm guessing it was an over sight from the video editor personally, but who knows.

This is just wrong, nothing is more tense then having two players only a point behind the leader everyone with high % and 15 seconds left. Also you can't go into sudden death in stock match which is the ultimate in high tense combat

....yes you can
especially if you put a time limit on the match

I just want Lucas and Game and Watch back in. I probably shouldn't panic but I'm panicking because G&W was my main in the previous two games. I just started playing as Lucas recently.

Snake, never played with?
lol

Nope, for reason I can't stand him.
I really tried but, I not able to enjoy him.

If it was required to have someone from Konami, please put someone from Castlevania series.

By the way, Samurai Goroh, Midna, Dark Samus and Saki was very nice.

Finally watched the Direct itself, great stuff. The Palutena teasing is hilarious, as well as the Ridley salt.

I loved all the footage of Mr. Fit, and the wireframe alt for Mac is pretty cool. (Though the actual character from the arcade isn't Mac FYI.) Even more so, I think this confirms that alternate costumes are gonna be in full force in these games.

Hype + 99999999999999999999999

I am convinced now that sakurai don't know what the hell he is doing,

1. yeah let's make the most demanded character in the west a boss that will make us happy.

2. don't like the transformation taking up roster space, now we have 2 zeldas,2 links. and 2 samus.

3. the 3ds first, great marketing so much for the wii u sales

4. cut pokemon trainer, he was the most unique character in the roster and the best rep for the series.

5. out of all the poss newcomers we get the stupid frog and it looks like he is another energy ball character what does that mean for mewtwo,

I could never get into Yoshi's moveset. Maybe there will be enough changes in SSB4 to make him viable to me.

As for other characters, I'm REALLY happy about the transformations being gone.

On Zero Suit Samus especially, I think she looks great! I'm all for the "rocket boots" too. Yes, they're a variation of "heels" like we saw in Other M but actually, they seem more like actual footwear to improve performance. You get a little bit of both; the sexiness from high heels but also a level of practicality.

Not that they're at all the same or anything, but low HP and defenses don't stop Pokemon like Gengar from using Substitute. Substitute isn't only used on bulky tank Pokemon.
I'll give you that.
Alternatively, you could want to substitute Greninja if you know an imminent attack is coming. Substitute is just really up to the player since you can come across all sorts of different playstyles. I agree with you though on the shuriken though, there are much better water attacks to use =)
If you are gonna go Physical you might as well do waterfall.
It's clever for the ninja theme.
Oh, I agree. I'm just pointing the irony. Then again, Rock Smash Charizard and Confusion Mewtwo. :/

Well, Sakurai said other boss characters would appear in other stages and implied in the same way as Yellow Devil and showed Ridley's shadow. Normally I would just take that at face value, but Sakurai knows his fanbase and was trolling throughout the presentation. He could have just shown Ridley if that's all there was to it, but maybe Ridley's model isn't finished yet or they really just wanted to tease. I honestly don't know what to think.

uhhhhh
well then
let's just say none of these are actual criticisms that I have so far

There are a ton of new items here, including some Namco-related ones(!).

I don't know how the hell to direct link this shit though. =/

Thank you!! *o*

Does someone know what the pixelated, yellow flag with the "S" is?

Originally an item for a Namco arcade game called Rally X. It sometimes appears in other Namco games, like Tekken and the Namco-developed Starfox Assault.

Edit: Oh, it's called the S-Flag. lol

Guys, is there a render without the white background of Sheik, Yoshi, Charizard and Greninja? I already have ZSS. I can't seem to find the others.

Can someone make a webm of Villager stealing Sonic's spring and then jumping on it, please?

Village seems so fun and mischievous.

Seems fitting =/

Honestly, some of your criticisms I would consider praises for Sakurai. For example, splitting the pairings up is a very smart way to hone each character's moveset and playstyle while adding another move to their repertoire. If you're not happy with 2 Zelda's and Samus's, can I ask what you think of the whole Link/Toon Link situation?
