Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

I think the only Pokémon that is certain to come back is Jigglypuff, mostly because I don't think Sakurai will drop any of the original bunch.

Mewtwo is a possibility, but beyond these two, I think we're done with Pokémon.

Honestly, I think the reason it'll come out first, is simply because it'll be ready first. The wii U version probably is more feature-rich and developing HD assets takes longer. That said, they COULD have purposefully delayed the 3DS version to prevent it from hurting wii U sales, so there may indeed be a reason why it's coming out so much sooner.

A Winter launch for the WiiU version makes sense sales wise, I get the whole holiday system seller thing. I just hope it had nothing to do with Nintendo having low expectations for the WiiU :(. I originally thought thats why they announced a 3DS version.

I've been saying this for months and months now - I don't get people who think there will be any significant number of cuts.

Snake might leave because of third party reasons. This will not be ideal, but it could happen.

Transforming characters would have left, except Sakurai took them and included them as separate character. I would assume that Squirtle and Ivysaur are gone, though, since they can't really stand up as their own characters like Charizard can.

Outside of special circumstances, I'm strongly of the opinion that no characters from brawl will be cut - Brawl's roster was concise and included almost all very important characters from its respective franchise. Very few characters could feasibly be cut.

R.O.B. is a vital piece of Nintendo history, especially in the US. Jigglypuff is a Smash veteran since the first game, and incredibly unique as a character. Lucas is the protagonist of a very popular game and an underrepresented franchise. Falco is a Smash veteran and a popular character, Wolf is a popular character with important ties to the Star Fox franchise. Ike is popular, especially in America, and was popular enough that he had a kid in Awakening despite all reasonable logic.

If anything I'm beginning to wonder if we'll just get seven Pokemon reps - Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, Greninja, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, and a grass starter. It's a lot, sure, but hey. It's Pokemon.

Tons of Squirtle and Ivysaur doubt in here, screw it I'll issue a 2-week avatar bet that those two will return if anyone wants to take me up on it.

If they don't add Mewtwo (or some other Pokemon), than Pokemon will have 1 less character than it did in Brawl.

I think Nintendo is smart for releasing the 3DS one first. I know I wasn't the only one who was going to pass on it for the Wii U version. Since it's coming out first, I'm more inclined to buy it to keep me busy until the Wii U version.

The Substitute looks like a real toy.
This Substitute looks gorgeous.

I think it's a high res sprite, similar to the food:

Seven Pokemon reps would be great, but I really don't see it happening.

People are using the Pokémon via PokéBalls as evidence of over exposure. They're just extensions of an item. You don't see them complaining about Mario or Zelda items being too plentiful. Pokémon has one item in the game (now two but they do the same thing).

The whole thing is ridiculous. Pokémon is Nintendo's 2nd most popular franchise. Hell, it's the world's 2nd most popular franchise.

I'd argue about "world's 2nd most popular franchise", but yeah, Pokemon is one of Nintendo's most vital franchises and those arguing otherwise are simply wrong. Pokemon resurrected GameBoy, Pokemon games are the best selling games of GBA and 3DS, Pokemon is one of the few franchises that consistently sells over 15 million copies with every major iteration, Pokemon has a HUGE fanbase and a ton of viable choices for playable characters.

Hell, if anything at the moment it's more surprising that there are so few representatives of the series revealed for Smash 4.

Also interesting how some of the Assist Trophy characters shown off were popular B-List characters from the Super Smash Bros. Brawl days (Ashley, Dark Samus, Midna, Skull Kid). The only one I didn't see from that category is Krystal. Likewise, I think it's also pretty significant Isaac did not show up in the returning AT montage.

It wasn't only Isaac though. Isaac was an unlockable Assist, and none of the unlockable Assists from Brawl were shown in that video for the new game (And, yes, there was such a thing).

ya'll are some crazy mothafuckas for thinking people like Falcon, R.O.B, & Ness are going to get cut lol

R.O.B's not going to get cut; he's got his own series and a original moveset. Same goes for Falcon and Ness.

It's not just here, it's elsewhere. Saw one person say they should cut all Pokémon and PokéBall items, and just have one representation; a trainer with Pikachu, but one of the specials is throwing PokéBalls as support which then release the Pokémon like the item.

Pokemon have always been essential to Smash. I remember having tons of Pokemon only / Pokeball only matches growing up. I know I'm not the only one, too. These people you're talking to are crazies. I think some Pokemon need cuts but they definitely need to be replaced.

So I'm guessing that we'll have at least one more representative from Pokemon, and while Lucario is there, it's likely that Mewtwo won't be coming back.

Mega Man's final smash was glorious

Pong Assist will be awesome.

I'm a little surprised at the transformations but at least it might mean that they'll have different final smash attacks.

City trial was my favorite part of Air Ride so I'm hype for that

Super Smash Bros: Balanced for Final Destination.

Why not? Technically Pokemon had six reps in Brawl, why not have one more?
I usually hate playing this card but it's very relevant now that transforming characters are split up.

Plus, with Sheik as a separate character, The Legend of Zelda will have at least five reps (Link, TLink, Zelda, Sheik, Ganondorf), Mario already has five reps (excluding spinoffs) - and that's assuming no more newcomers from either of those franchises. And, personally, I think there's a decent chance of at least The Legend of Zelda getting at least one newcomer, so...

I think they'll add a grass starter from a different generation.

The only one who would work physically is Sceptile. Venusaur's body is not made at all for fighting. Meganium is the least popular starter in the game. Torterra is the same body shape problem as Venusaur. Serperior would be... awkward as a fighter. And Chesnaught loses out because Greninja is already in the game.

And Sceptile isn't really a popular Pokemon, although I'd love to see Gen 3 be represented with a character since they seem underrepresented in Smash Bros.

Anyone think they'll announce Ike and Chrom in the same trailer, like how they announced charizard and greninja in the same trailer? Would be a cool way to show off the fire emblem wii U stage, too. Show some all-out war between nations, one army led by marth, one led by ike, then a 3rd army shows up, and it's Chrom or whoever the awakening rep is.

I for one am absolutely positive we are not going to be getting Squirtle/Ivysaur. Sakurai clearly chose the most iconic and popular Pokemon from the Pokemon Trainer bunch and made it its own character, while adding Greninja as a newcomer for the Pokemon series. We now have 4 Pokemon. I don't see us getting both Squirtle and Ivysaur as individual fighters, especially with the original veteran, Jigglypuff, still unconfirmed.
Really going to miss Squirtle, though. Has always been my favorite starter Pokemon... oh well.

But with that being said... I can't help but question the fate of Mewtwo. Going to appear alongside Jigglypuff as a returning veteran? Just Mewtwo? Just Jigglypuff? ...Neither??

Completely agree about no character cuts. I feel like with the much larger team Sakurai had this time around benifited the roster size. Some of the reasoning behind some cuts are non-sensical. I can picture Chrom making it in, but him replacing Ike is dumb. Chrom isn't the tank Ike is, and him using the much smaller Falchion and taking Ike's move set would just look silly. And just like with the lead up to Brawl you have people worrying about the original 12 making it in. Seriously, guys?

No way they cut OGs. Jiggly, Captain and Ness are safe.

Yeah, I am not worried about any of them.

But so far, we had zero copy-character announced.

If they do the same thing they did with little mac, and add costumes to other character I expect ( hope) Dr. Mario, Falco, Wolf and Lucas to be just diferent costumes of already existing characters.

Gannondorf deserves to be more than just a slower and stronger Cpt. Falco, so I think he will be in.

Doc should be a costume, sure. All of the others should stay as separate characters, no question.

So....are we expecting a separate April direct?

Yes. I haven't seen Nintendo ever skipped on Bimonthly tho.

April - BiMonthly Direct
May - Mario Kart Direct
June - E3 Bimonthly Direct

Color whatever 15 was such an amazing assist trophy.

I wouldn't be.

Isaac, Advance Wars, Barbara, Shadow, Gray Fox and Ray MK 3 were secret assist trophies so of course they wouldn't reveal them so soon.

Ike was never a "tank" outside of Smash Bros though. He was an all around balanced character in his Path of Radiance version, and even his bulkier Radiant Dawn self still was fairly balanced.

Chrom is another fairly balanced lord, who's often said in the story scenes to be too strong (accidentally breaking walls while training). It wouldn't be any odder than what they did with Ike.

Anyone notice that character percentages aren't present on screen for 3DS. Must be on bottom screen, like shown during the smash run mode. Will be hard to keep track of percents :/

the only characters at risk of being cut from brawl at this point are: snake, falco, wolf, jigglypuff and lucas. personally i wouldn't mind falco being removed.

pokemon had the biggest representation in brawl and it's going to continue; the roster will have at least 7 pokemon. pokemon trainer counted as 3 characters (development time is all that matters and ultimately they put time for 3 characters in pokemon trainer). i feel squirtle and ivysaur will get separate slots or will be replaced by two new pokemon (possibly mewtwo for one slot).

the rest of the brawl cast are safe.

I want Sceptile in just to see a Gen 3 rep. <3 Though Gen 5 has never been represented in Smash either.

Serperior would just be sad to watch flail around trying to hit people

Yes, let's cut one of the most popular characters in the game.

Jigglypuff would be such a weird inclusion at this point, I'd be ok with Jiggles being cut tbh. I'd much rather see Mewtwo instead. At least the latter is still very much relevant. Still, I doubt they're cutting one of the originals. :/
