Nintendo Downloads - April 2014

Debating on picking up Kirby today on the Wii U. Never played it and I love some Kirby but I do have the 3DS game coming next month.
 
Amazing Mirror is one of the few Kirby games I outright don't like.

Just can't get on with it. Always get lost, feels like I'm never making progress.

Kirby does not work as a Metroidvania at all. I always meant to buy Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, but I never did, and after I finally got it as an Ambassador game on 3DS, I was glad I never paid money for it.
 
I remember liking the game back then, but replaying it on 3DS, yeah the series just doesn't work as a Metroid-style game. Just so damn confusing figuring out where to go, especially when it's not like other games where you need specific skills/items from bosses & such to access new areas, so you know where to focus on at the moment until you're able to get a new item or skill that'll let you reach a new area.

Collecting those treasures was a pain, as well.

Funny i think this game is pretty metroidvania like and like it more then a metroidvania game.

& Chain Blaster is a decent distraction if it's $4 or less. Glad I waited for a sale, though, as there's really only 1 mode & one (easy) unlockable ship. Pretty much just a "see how long you last/high a score you can get" shmup. At the very least, there's a demo for it that lets you try up to the first boss.

Edit: We need folders on the WiiU, why they weren't there on launch is beyond me.
 
All of these GBA games being the same as Ambassador titles is starting to bum me out. Having finally swallowed the reality that they're doing GBA on Wii U and not 3DS it would be nice if they started mixing things up a little and not exercising redundancy for their most loyal fans.

I've bought so much stuff on the U now. My panels are an absolutel mess. Trying to make it so that each page has something, though. First page is General Wii U stuff, apps, etc. Second is eShop titles. Third is SNES, fourth is GBA, fifth is NES. But even that is getting messy and unmanagable.

They must be in the works, they have to be, it was a huge deal when the 3DS got them...
 
To be fair, Superstar Saga, Golden Sun, & Advance Wars weren't Ambassador titles. Plus we've heard Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow & F-Zero GP Legend might be coming as well.
 
And I was a good Nintendo loyalist and picked up Advance Wars to show support, may even pick up AoS just to cast a vote of confidence in more "Metroidvania's" - heck, I am even replaying Fusion on my 3DS hoping that they pay enough attention to the Gameplay Records to know that we care but it will be wonderful if/when more 3rd party titles start streaming into the eShop.

I'm wondering this too, or at least when more will get on board, especially Square Enix. I'm also curious to see if we'll receive any translations, such as Mother 3. Very slightly optimistic, though I know deep down that the chance are slim.

For $3, Chain Blaster is pretty decent. I mentioned above it's alright, but wasn't worth $7 (I remember getting it the last time it was on sale). For that price, if you liked the demo and a shmup that's more focused on getting a high score/seeing how long you can last, it's worth getting.

Re Blackgate: BUY!

Ok, I have the spare time now to properly share my impressions from this game (it was really late when I posted last night, but on the plus side, I'm 4h in : )

First thing first - Blackgate is clearly an up-port; a very competent up-port of a good game, but still an up-port. And I'm rather harsh when it comes to up-ports. For instance, I consider RE:R to be a failure as an up-port; while it looks nice, it plays worse than the 3DS original, thanks to the fubared reticle. Blackgate, too, has its gameplay roots in a 3DS game (which I've only seen, but never played, mind you). Luckily, nothing seems gimped in the controls or feedback mechanics - actually the former are very thoughtfully mapped to the gamepad, to the point one would wonder how the original manged with just 3DS inputs. Now, some things could have been 'levelled-up' from the 3DS - I'm referring to the rather 'rigidly 2D' line-of-engagement of the player with the AI thugs during combat - the player interacts in the 2D plane, never even slightly to the sides, which can occasionally put a baddie 'out-of-reach' for the player, if the AI somehow ended up in the sidelines. But even those combat mechanics do not really impede the game, as long as the player is well aware of the limitations.

So, with that out of the way, here are some of the great things about the game:

It's a true Batman metroidvania game! Heck, it's made by the people who reinvented metroidvania in first-person 3D. Only this time their creation is more 'canonical' than the other batman games, thanks to the the 2D camera/action. The game levels, though, are anything but 2D. Just like in the Metorid and Batman games, Blackgate levels are fully 3D - lots of interconnections between a plethora of nodes in 3D space, with a few of those interlinks safely out of your current paygrade, in the true tradition of metroidvania. You will surely spend some time drawing paths in your head.

It's a true Batman game! Slow and thoughtful, where your survival is a function of your tactics first, and your fists second. Speaking of fists, the counter-attack mechanics is strong in Blackgate - you'll block/evade/counterattacking most of the time when in close combat. And of course you're not expected to fist-fight riflemen, duh!

Did I mention it's a competent up-port? Rock-solid fps, good looking environments and closeups - Batman, in particular, has been nicely upres'd. Clearly the authors had no issues whatsoever with the Bluepoint engine ; )

TL;DR, I'm currently having some great metroidvania time with Blackgate. And so could you ; )

Yeah, I quit it after repeating the same loop like five times. After playing some more Kirby games from the Wii Collection, went back to it hoping to "get" it more, but Amazing Mirror is just an entirely different type of game. Finally was able to make sense of it, when I realized the way to progress in the game is to focus on filling out the map 100% in every level. It's really a map-grinding game. You're just constantly exploring everywhere to try to find the extra exits that you didn't find previously. Somewhere after half-way filling out all the maps, things are connected enough that the game actually starts to make a semblance of sense in design. It's still not a Kirby game. It's still not a Metroidvania game. It is an exploratory map-grinder game that just happens to star Kirby and clone friends, feature Kirby powerups, and feature Kirby enemies.
Opening up the power room that allows you to get the Smash Bros. power up whenever you want was great, though. Think it opened up very near the end for me, but it was fun and made getting those last doors that required specific powers to work out much better.
It was fine as a free Ambassador game. Wouldn't have wanted to pay for it, though. If you want to buy a Kirby game, my recommendation is still Dream Land 2. It was the best Kirby game I played on the Wii Collection disk (didn't play SuperStar, though, so can't compare to that one). Getting the Wii Collection disk would be a great idea, too! :lol

Wish we knew we were getting Shovel Knight in April, but Yacht Games still says they are working on things as much as possible while still sending half their team to PAX East.

At this rate even if they get it done before April ends I bet Nintendo will need a lead time of a week or two so we are probably looking at beginning of May for the earliest release. :(

Yep, that's what I heard as well (the first paragraph). It's disappointing that we had such concrete release windows for several eShop games that didn't end up coming out yet and that we don't have new release dates for. I'd really love to get some new dates on a bunch of these.

3, 4 and Rondo of Blood are the best old school vanias. Out of those 4 is hands down my favorite, even though it's the easiest and in some ways a step back from 3. I'd say start with that

I've never been one to shy away from difficulty, so what's the difference between 3 and 4?

In 3 there's alternate paths/exits that take you to entirely different stages and four playable characters with completely different abilities, so you have to play it multiple times to see everything. In 4 you only play as Simon with linear level progression, and it's easier simply for the fact that it's more user friendly with stuff like being able to control your jumps midair and being able to whip in more than two directions (and the limp whip).That being said it's not an easy game either, just easier than the NES ones. They're both great games though, guess it just depends what you like more

Seconded, I rarely check the eshop anymore and when I do I find I missed nothing.
 
man, i'm really enjoying advance wars for the first time, though it makes me wish that sega started releasing genesis games again so i can get langrisser/warsong..

anyway, what other gba games are worth getting? i never had a gba and i'll definitely get golden sun, but besides that..?
 
How is the brightness on GBA VC? I'd love to hear how it looks compared to the 3DS ambassador versions. A side-by-side pic would be even better.

How pervasive is the paid DLC? I noticed on the website that they're selling what appears to be a hat and plant for $1, and a whole Sleeping Beauty Cafe set plus clothes for $2. Can you get a lot of classic Disney items without spending real money?
