Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

So they seem to be replicating the NSMB strategy from 2 years ago. 3DS version in August, Wii U in November seems like an easy bet.

1) Megaman
2) Greninja
3) Little Mac
4) Rosalina
5) Villager
6) Wii Fit Trainer

Megaman was my most wanted 3rd party and Greninja was the one I didn't know I wanted (also my starter!). Mac and Rosalina were great reveals, too. Villager's just slightly more interesting than the Trainer, who really doesn't appeal to me.

Ive never seen much of the STRONG tournament scene in smash but.....would custom moves really be bannable? I dont think so. Adds something new to the competitive mix imo.

1) Rosalina: She's always been my favorite since the first Galaxy, so I'm incredibly happy she's in. Her moveset looks really creative and fun.
2) Megaman: An excellent addition who deserved a spot. So far Nintendo has shown a great amount of respect towards him, in terms of his legacy and his moveset.
3) Little Mac: Not a character that was on my most wanted list, but he deserved a spot. I welcome his addition. I may play as him occasionally.
4) Villager: He's a funny character, and maybe I'll play as him sometimes. Not that much though.
5) Greninja: Really, I just don't care about him.
6) Wii Fit Trainer: I will never play as her (or him).

It depends on the scene and how anal they are. The SFxT community banned gems even though the customization only did things like give you +10% damage.

1. Villager: I was crushed when Sakurai bluntly concluded that Villager couldn't be a possible rep during Brawl's Iwata Asks segment. Very excited about his inclusion, and am hoping to main him day. He seems to be a trap-esque character, and I wonder what possible tree/bowling ball setups are possible.

2. Mega Man: The only other 3rd party character that expected to be in Brawl. Happy to see him actually included this time, and with a move-set oozing with fan-service and nostalgia.

3. Little Mac: Was about time, especially after the disappointment of him being an assist trophy previously. I can only hope that they balance him correctly.

4. Rosalina & Luma: I was originally disappointed with this choice, but their play style reminds me a lot of Alice in IaMP, and it is glorious.

5. Wii Fit Trainer: Definitely thought this character was reaching roster wise, but their is a very unique air to their play styles.

6. Greninja: Not really feeling this newcomer. Just seems like a Shiek/Lucario hybrid, but it may grow on me.

Competitive scenes thrive on consistency and structure. Navigating around to customize characters before rounds and the variance that custom move sets can introduce are seen as things that get in the way of the game's core for this group.

Can't I just say I love all the newcomers?? Too hard to rank, they're all freaking awesome. But if I had to choose one, Mega Man is definitely my favorite, for obvious reasons.

Which I thought was kind of silly. Well in my honest opinion at least.

I just hope they look into the custom moves before deciding anything......who the hell is in charge of banning these kind of things in the smash community anyways? Cant be that guy in the video only.

@Azure J

Well I guess that menu navigating would be annoying, on the WiiU at least.

I honestly feel like these guys are some of the best compliments to the established veterans ever.

Tournament directors make the bans, but they key in with the community.

Banning it outright is pretty dumb, but the Smash community is also the craziest of all communities when it comes to banning things.

Quick Pokemon Y questions. I just got it yesterday and evolved my Froakie to a Frogadier. I keep hearing about a hidden ability called Protean for when it becomes Greninja. How do get Protean once I evolve my current starting Frogadier to Greninja?

PS I haven't played Pokemon since Game Boy days :(

Indeed.

The only one I'm not really excited for is Megaman, but I don't have any previous attachment to the character. That said I'm glad the Megaman fans are being thrown a bone.

You have to catch a Frogadier from the Friend Safari or trade for one.

Hidden abilities aren't available to regular pokemon. They have to be bred from pokemon acquired from special conditions (Friend Safari, now-defunct Dream World)

The customization stuff will probably be banned as a matter of logistics. If letting players customize adds 30 seconds-1 minute per player per set... that adds up fast over the course of a tournament.

If I had to rank the newcomers from who I think looks the most fun to play as, it would have to be:

1: Wii Fit Trainer
2: Rosalina
3: Little Mac
4: Greninja
5: Villager
6: Megaman

You can't change a Pokemon's ability - they're set on capture/encounter. If your Froakie/Frogadier didn't have Protean, then your Greninja won't either.

If you want one, there's a post-game facility called the Friend Safari where you can catch Frogadiers with the ability. Or you can trade with someone. Hidden Abilities are only found in certain locations/under certain conditions.

Pretty sure because it'd be a new feature, if it's not completely outlandish (like literally making your own move) then I'm sure the community would have the sensibilities to try it out first. If it's nothing on the same level as say, what Soul Calibur allows you to do with custom characters then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't outright ban it.

You have to remember, the community did test items and every stage for Melee before they arrived where they were in like 2005 and 2006. Items were only banned immediately for Brawl because it's a holdover rule, the item system hadn't changed much at all (it was still random spawns and etc).

Not to mention, the community didn't outright ban every stage for Brawl unless it was plainly obvious to not work for a competitive setting (like 75m). I'm pretty sure early on Brawl stage lists consisted of stages like Jungle Japes from Melee to Rainbow Cruise being legal but as Meta Knight became more dominant more and more stages started to get banned. Sort of similar to what Fox did to the Melee stage list (his ability to circle camp some of the larger stages, for example or the wall infinites with waveshines).

Stuff gets banned for good reason and after a lot of consideration and testing. The idea things get banned immediately based on the "no items" thing as soon as Brawl came out is silly.

I'm hoping I didn't misunderstand your post, Karst lol.

Ah shoot. Okay, I'll have to see if I can trade with someone or wait till I get to the Safari Zone since I only have a starter Froakie/Frogadier. Thanks guys!

What Caladrius said. If you want I can give you one from the Friend Safari. I haven't touched my X/Y in a while, but I believe I had a friend with him in their Safari. They start at level 30, so it would only be minor setback.

I'm hoping that custom moves are at least tried out. I mean it's not like we're talking Mario's fireball is now replaced with a falcon punch, or Marth's recovery is replaced with Olimar's. The custom moves are predetermined and a pro fighting game player should be able to adapt if Mario's fireballs stay on the field a bit longer compared to the normal fireball and whatnot.

My two cents

Wouldn't custom movesets only help the competitive game?

Certain matchups are heavily skewed towards certain characters, so the 'losing' one could tweak their moves in a way that helps them against the other character, making a more balanced, fun and varied game.

I honestly feel like these guys are some of the best compliments to the established veterans ever.

It's a nice change from Brawl's newcomers all trying to be showstoppers. Greninja/Villager/WFT don't do anything particularly fancy, they just sort of belong.

I'd see about trading for it, since there are tons of spare Froakies people would be willing to lend you and you don't get Friend Safari available until you beat the game.

What would you like in return? I don't have much as I just started.

I'm not super excited for a single character, I'm more excited for just all of the changes in general.

But if Shulk is revealed...

After watching the Tomodachi Life direct, I am suddenly very excited for the stage. I'm just thinking about all of the things that could happen on it @.@, and Mii just became an awesome newcomer in my eyes.

Yeah I'd be up for trading with anyone here. I don't have much to offer since I just started.

We don't know if they're pre-determined, the DK Side B having armor clip sort of negates the idea that stuff is pre-determined as armor could literally be added via a toggle -- it wouldn't be something that could be an exclusive option to Side B.

If they are pre-determined, yeah it's absolutely okay to try them out but if they're customizable in the same way the stage builder allowed you to make stages with a very limited set of tools then I don't see it being viable for competitive play.

They're throwing the competitive community a bone with FOR GLORY, where custom moves will not he available. I don't see them being available in tournaments either, and I hope GLORY is a sign that they'll take balance seriously with this game.

I'm sure there will be plenty of broken custom movesets as well.

However I also kind of hope there is an incredible amount of nuanced control over the movesets, and that if the game is horribly unbalanced on release, we could use the custom tools to provide better game balance without requiring unofficial mods.

Ooh, here's an idea: if your dream characters made it in, who would be your primaries, secondaries and tertiaries? You can have one primary, three secondaries and five tertiaries.

Primary: Ganondorf
Secondaries: Greninja, ROB, Pichu Bros.
Tertiaries: Anthony Higgs, Game & Watch, Wii Fit Trainer, Impa, Samus

I don't know how anyone could still hate Miis after having seen that Direct.

Fair enough, we'll just have to wait and see if it is just a pre-determined list of buffs for moves or not. I personally just don't see the moves being nearly as customizable as Brawl stage builder was, but so little was actually shown I was just speculating.

It really depends on its implementation and what it allows you to do. Both of which we do not have a grasp of yet, let alone the possibilities.

There's also the option of not allowing certain customizations as well if they're too crazy. I don't think the tourney scene is going to ban the system itself outright, because it has potential to make a huge splash in terms of the game's depth, as well as character balance. This would give characters that would be bad as their vanilla versions the option to become tournament viable, and open up a lot of variety.

The one thing I'm concerned with in terms of Smash 4's competitive future is the stages. Looking at the stages that have been shown so far, I've only seen very few that I think are going to be tournament viable. Of course, maybe Sakurai has just shown more of the crazy stages than plain ones, and I'm worrying over nothing.

Now that I've had a few days to cool down, I think Greninja's a pretty good pick. Is it safe to say that it's is the most popular gen six Pokémon? I own and enjoy X, but I don't really keep up with the community -- I'm not sure who the fan favorites are.

I love Greninja, and its inclusion is more than welcome. It looks amazing.

However.

It feels... assymetrical. Which isn't a bad thing. But something about one starter making it in over others just feels off, especially when Chespin and Braixen would've worked brilliantly as well. I know Sakurai has axed transformations, but PT was the one character where it was really nice to have cause it felt like actually being a Pokemon Trainer and managing your Pokemon. I would've been okay with getting rid of the stamina thing. But I'm disappointed that Sakurai gave up on PT. I can only hope that Ivysaur and Squirtle make their way back as separate characters.

Regardless, Greninja looks amazing. Looking forward to playing him.

We really got 2 starters, though. Charizard for fire, and Greninja for water. Greninja is basically replacing Squirtle, and it's a great trade (though Blastoise > all).

1) Mega Man is definitely the hypest newcomer for me, and as the champion of my all-time favourite series I imagine he'll be the one that I play the most over the game's lifespan, but
2) Little Mac looks fantasticly crunchy. I cannot wait to fling some jump-punches halfway across Final Destination online. I'm betting on Mac being high tier.
3) Greninja. Ninja types are generally pretty fun. ZSS / Shiek / Snake vibes are good vibes. A bit of Metaknight thrown in there too. Who knows, he might be broken!
4) Rosalina. I doubt she'll be any good, but I want someone to make her Stand mechanics work. I can never manage stuff like that, but it'll be interesting to try.
5) Wii Fit Trainer. Kinda basic as a character, not that interesting of a moveset, but solid.
6) Villager. Planting trees, grabbing projectiles, getting gimped while recovering? He doesn't look like my idea of fun. But we'll see. Not every character is for everyone.

I was waiting for someone to list in this order; this would be my list.

Ive never seen much of the STRONG tournament scene in smash but.....would custom moves really be bannable? I dont think so. Adds something new to the competitive mix imo.

Take what anyone says with a grain of salt. Unless it's someone respected within the Smash community like Prog, Hungryb0x, D1, Gimr, etc. Their opinion isn't worth anything and isn't reflective of the tournament scene whatsoever.

There isn't even a metagame yet and it's too early to tell whether or not customizable movesets are bannable.

At the moment, we can safely say it's shafted to the side until a tournament metagame is developed, which can take up to a year.

Vanilla SSB4 without Custom Movesets will definitely be the first set of tournament rules followed and applied. Once that's adequately fleshed out, we can focus on a custom moveset ruleset.

That being said, I don't think custom movesets will be part of the official metagame and will be implemented to compliment Vanilla SSB4, akin to Project M. It really depends on how easy and fast it is to boot up movesets between matches. They'd also need to confirm what features are unbalanced such as certain superarmor moves and adding sweetspots. With customizable movesets, games will be less about matchups and more about reading your opponent and punishing them. I'd like a custom moveset tournament, but don't expect it anytime soon. It's definitely an interesting feature and it won't be ruled out completely contrary to what Smashboard users may believe.

TL;DR: not anytime soon, wait for the vanilla metagame to develop first. We'll see in maybe about a year.

P.S. Being from the NorCal scene and after talking to some members of the community, the consensus is pretty similar.

HomeMadeWaffles: Man I think it's interesting as hell and I don't care as long as it's fun, fuck the haters. Maybe I'll be good for once, kick Ken's ass or something.
Zhu: It's pretty cool.
PewPewU: It's not gonna be tourney viable, at least at first but it seems fun.

I've yet to talk to Toph or any SoCal people but honestly people are blowing it out of proportions.

I don't think it's so much he gave up on PT, but rather that he gave up on multiple characters on a single slot. It had a lot of issues mechanically and on the technical level, on top of the cost of having to learn dramatically different characters - and that's before adding stamina into the mix.

I know I don't post much here, but I thought I'd give my input.

1. Mega Man. My childhood dreams of pitting Mario, Sonic, and Mega Man against each other have become a reality.
2. Wii Fit Trainer
3. Lil Mac. Looks like a ton of fun
4. Greninja. At first I didn't really like this one, but I've warmed up to it.
5. Villager. Just can't get hyped for him.
6. Rosalina. Looks like Ice Climbers got replaced, and I feel like Nintendo is trying their best to shoehorn into everything.
