Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

I don't understand this "Rosalina is shoehorned in to everything" bandwagon.

She's like the only new Mario character in ten years and has been a playable character in one platformer and like two Mario Karts.

Yeah, I really don't get it myself. When was the last time the Mario series got a character that was treated like the big four/five (Mario, Luigi, Peach, & Toad with Bowser as the villain) anyway? Yoshi was like 1992 thinking about it.

Ooh, here's an idea: if your dream characters made it in, who would be your primaries, secondaries and tertiaries? You can have one primary, three secondaries and five tertiaries.

Primary: Ganondorf
Secondaries: Greninja, ROB, Pichu Bros.
Tertiaries: Anthony Higgs, Game & Watch, Wii Fit Trainer, Impa, Samus
Primary: Meta Ridley
Secondary: Ridley, Omega Ridley, NES Ridley
Tertiary: Mecha Ridley, Ridley X

Not playing Other M Ridley since that one's obviously a stage hazard.

If the Chorus Men/Marshall rumour is true, and assuming each series gets at least one stage, I hope we get both English and Japanese versions of songs in the series. like the Wario songs in Brawl. It would be a shame if we didn't get the English Dreams of Our Generation

I don't know how anyone could still hate Miis after having seen that Direct.

Too true. The direct sold me on the game.

Seriously, guys, this thread has exploded, the only reason I havent posted as much is because I was watching and finishing up accel world

What's that?!

...why is the taiko thing 2d ?

I dont know how people are reminded of new pork city when its clearly more aligned with the temple.

Larger and open space, more dynamic platforms and stage elements, very little connection between the different segments of the stage.

Temple was a very static location with very few gimmicks outside of the sheer size.

What year was Mario Sunshine, when Bowser Jr was created? Now he was shoehorned into everything, when they could have been using perfectly good Koopalings all along.

He's also the reason I'm glad Rosalina is the new Mario rep, because if it wasn't her, they'd definitely pass right over all 7 Koopalings, with all their personality, and go straight into a Bowser clone.

This is far more in depth than the super/assist stuff, and far more important. In addition, I doubt it'll be like "Marth's attacks have freezing attributes." It'll be more "Marth's Shield Breaker freezes and has the range of Fox's side B, his Counter does X, Dancing Blade now does Y."

More options = good. If the options are too powerful, then they're going to be banned. Easy as that. We don't know for certain how deep customization is going to be, how powerful the bonuses will be, if you can stack bonuses, if only 1 move can be customized, etc. This is why I'm saying that as of this moment, saying "it's gonna be banned" is silly, and putting forward the notion to ban outright is as well. Does it need investigation for its viability, though? That's for sure.

Of course, I'm sure there's going to be tournaments that will ban it, but generally speaking, it will take time and investigation to see if it's ban-worthy or not.

I know all of the above is certainly going to be happening for sure, as I've been part of the process before (I'm in the BBR, and worked on ruleset recommendations particularly during the early days of Brawl).
Some TOs even started up an experimental series of side-tournaments to investigate the viability of items and custom stages in competitive play back in the day. Never picked off tho.

Primary: Shulk
Secondary: Neku, Vatti, Lugia
Tertiary: Ridley, Toadsworth, Realistic Reggie, Gary MF Oak, Wolf Link

Doubt it. I imagine that they'd be banned outright, because it introduces a chaotic element. For example, I'm playing against a Marth - will his attacks freeze me? What's the range? Etc. As if I didn't have to worry about the matchup already, it could go completely south because of some extra shit. At best, I can imagine some customizations being allowed to nerf overpowered characters, or to balance the game in the way that the community sees fit. But those would be specific and standardized. That's at best.

Whether customization is banned or not depends a lot on how it works. I know the wiimote's have a bit of memory in them, not sure if the new WiiU controller's do, but if you can create your custom loadout for your character at home, then carry it with you and load it for the tournament, that would be fine. If you're spending 5 minutes before the match begins customizing your character, that's going to be a problem.

And specific customization can be banned just like specific stages. You probably won't be able to change your customizations between rounds though.

Banning outright, without testing, would be downright stupid. I'd be very sad to hear that happening.

Testing and discovering what works and what, if anything, doesn't is far healthier. There's as much possibility it will enrich the game/competitive scene and make it more fun, more challenging, and more engaging as it will be chaotic and confusing.

I'd still love Seviper because how awesome would it be to control a Snake! I know it's basically impossible since Snivy is probably going to be a Pokeball Pokemon, but still.

Yes, that pun was intended.

A part of me even thinks that is half the reason Sakurai's even putting customization in the first place. Metaknight too powerful? Take away some recovery moves! SDing too often with Ike or Wolf? Buff their recoveries! Samus' super missiles don't kill reliably? Buff them into ice missiles so you can Smash attack, etc.

So after the direct the other day rank the newcomers in terms of most excited to least excited

1. Greninja - Strider jokes aside, he definitely seems like my type of character. Aside from being my favorite XY Pokemon both design and competitive-wise, I definitely want to give him a shot. I originally thought if he was in, he'd be part of an XY trainer (with something like Chespin and Braixen), but hey, solo ninja's good enough for me.
2. Mega Man - Man, Megaman. There's so much to like about this character in this game. Zoning isn't exactly my specialty, but he looks like a very fun character to play as.
3. Little Mac - I always liked the "boxer" type of character in a fighting game, and Little Mac is no exception. While his seemingly poor air options make me wary, I definitely want to try him out. That OHKO move looks hella satisfying to try out.
4. Villager - Seems like an extremely weird character...and that's prolly why I'm looking forward to playing as him lol. Not too much to say, he seems fun to play as.
5. Wii Fit Trainer - Speaking of weird characters, WFT is definitely one I want to try too. Doubt I'll be maining her, but as a fun side character, I'm definitely looking forward to trying her out.
6. Rosalina - Like WFT, doubt I'll be maining her (controlling two characters at once are not my thing), but she definitely seems interesting. Can't wait to try her out.

All the newcomers are looking great so far. Really hope the trend continues with the rest of them!

I think I'm going to be the only person maining Zelda. Good.

2. Wii Fit Trainer is OP, can't wait to use her.
3. Olimar was fun to use in Brawl, so I want to see what the changes did for him.
4. Yoshi, I've never liked Yoshi, but he looks much improved now, less floaty it seems.

you're creating a tournament for an unfinished game with no set release dates for various regions
This is why I'm not rushing to sign up for any tournament. Proper release dates first, please.

Now I'm interested in a Three Wolf Moon thing, aside from Wolf and Wolf Link any other wolves from Nintendo?
Can't think of too many Nintendo games in general with anthropomorphic animals, either in "furry" form (think Star Fox, Sonic) or full-on feral form (think Okami). There's... Dillon, I guess, but I didn't play it, so I don't know if it has a wolf. Golden Sun has Sveta; her normal form doesn't seem really wolf-like to me, while her transformed form is a fair bit more so (if still not quite there). (Kind of funny she's not more wolflike normally; Camelot was all over wolfmen when they were in charge of the Shining series for Sega.)

In a tournament setting, which customization your opponent will have is not going to be a secret, obviously. You won't have the random element of "will Marth's attack freeze me?" because your opponent kept that information from you, but you will be outright told that this Marth's attacks have the freezing attribute.
This is what differentiates the customization from items as well - items spawn at a random time at a random place. Unless there's customization with random effects, but even then it would have to be investigated how it would interact with the game.
After all, we have stages and characters with random elements to their movesets in Smash - Peach's turnips, Olimar's Pikmin order, Dedede's minions (though some are going to change with Smash 4)... The fact Sakurai is cutting down on the random element in the character movesets is however a good sign, in my opinion.

Generally speaking, customization allows for significantly more depth, because every character gets more options and ways to deal with things that the vanilla version couldn't.

If there's a 4BR like there was for Melee and Brawl, then I'm pretty sure there's going to be a big effort to investigate the customization options, and if the system turns out to be bad for competitive play, it will be banned. If it is adding more depth to the game, then, at worst, there will be cherry picking those that don't break the game.

As of this moment, customization seems a great mechanic similar to what we've seen in other fighting games before, like picking different supers for a character, or the different assists in the MvC series.

This sums it up pretty well for me.

After much trial and error and investigation, we will know what moves could be viable and which would be broken or op. Hell, if Namco/sakurai put enough care in balancing these custom movesets, we could see a situation where we can literally Taylor the tierlist. This could mean Samus/Ganondorf/Link/Zelda could actually rise above shit tier! We could also impose nerfs if we get another MK situation. Afterall, if brawl had this, the shuttle loop could be changed, as well as machnado.

Primary-Eliwood (Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken)
Secondary-Chrom, Marth, Ike
Tertiaries: Dr. Mario, Toon Link, Game & Watch, Phoenix Wright, Hatsune Miku

Anyone else having a minor withdrawal/wanting another Smash Direct like, now? :lol

It's not that I was disappointed with what I saw or felt like the info we got wasn't a lot, but damn I want to know it all so badly now.

Yep.

I feel like a spoiled brat while saying this, but I want even more. More!!

Hey now, 3 out of those 4 were mid tier in Melee lol.

Nope, I'm still overwhelmed with the information but the direct is so amazing. Plus I don't want smash daily images would run out of things to talk about.

I'm not rushing to signing up either because I lack the proper requirements, I have a wiiU(proudly I might add, and also I would be lying if I said I did expect the 3DS version to come out first) but not a 3DS and without a job(though that is most likely to change in the coming weeks) so I wouldnt sign up until im absolutely sure.

To think we only have for or 5 months left.

Hurrhurr

We should savor our Batshit insane speculation and debate. We're not going to get this chance for another good 5 years or so.

Pfft, been maining her ever since Brawl.

We all do, rumor has it we might get a Season 2, after Sword Art Online 2 finishes.

Possible strong spoilers:
apparently it shows how the main character of SA:O creates Accel World.

....I need to watch Sword art Online D:

for in-universe's sake I guess you could watch it, but fair warning, SAO is the author's first story, and so therefore, is crap, even cajun is like no to it, its really bad and im able to appreciate accel world more because it shows how much the author has improved.

There's still quite a bit to talk about regarding the Direct. Right now I'm focusing on characters. Then I'm gonna look at stages.

There are lots of small changes they introduced.

I keep hearing things go down hill fast in SAO. I will eventually watch it.....just hope its as good as some people say.

On Topic: I seriously wonder when the next time Sakurai will give us another Smash Bros Megaton. Does not need to be a Direct though.

"Get a gift/prize by using a special code."

EDIT: It's just this. I must be missing something. They are the characters that will be taking up the slots that Mewtwo and Roy would have had until they got canned, obviously.

They were debating about how many Mario Kart games Rosalina has been in.

I think I'm going to be the only person maining Zelda. Good.
I mained Zelda/ToonLink/Lucario in Brawl and I'll probably do it again this time around.
Greninja I think I'll play a lot too, and maybe ZSS.

Depends who else gets in though, Wonder Red would be an instant main over everyone else, and Shulk, Palutena, Hades, Mewtwo or (trident pig) Ganon would be up there depending on how they played.

Zelda was the first character I seriously picked up in both Melee and Brawl, haha. Not sure I will do it again this time, but who knows.

Dillon, as his name suggests, is an armadillo.

Zelda was a beast in Melee, but Brawls extra floatiness killed her. Now that she has a downb that looks like it replaced her neutral b, her neutral could be something more useful.

I'm eagerly awaiting more of your write ups. I'm also trying to find the Pit write up that was done in here to check some things out.

nah, Zelda was pretty bad in Melee too
in fact in both games, people thought Zelda was better than she really was

Classic Shining Force is essentially furries srpg

Is little mac's alt just an elaborate palette swap, or is it a different model entirely? What are the chances alts will be completely different like Wario's from Brawl?
