if there are no benefits, it's pointless not to use core game mechanics. you can make rules for yourself, but that's outside of this games ruleset. what's in is supposed to be used, always.

That stance implies designers are infallible.

Nothing is infallible. (This argument is not referring to RoLP, just design choices in general)

To be honest, with the recent changes to getting humanity back from co-op'ing, I don't know why you would use RoLPs anyway, unless your equipment's power is predicated on being human (Staff of Amana, etc.). Wasting a ring slot sounds dumb to me.

nobody is. that's why we applaud good game design.

people hoard millions of souls endgame, because they can. one ring slot doesn't do much in this game. you have 4.

Yeah, I rotate between 6 or 7 rings of life protection to keep my 2-3 million souls.

I'd much rather spend 3000-21000 souls than lose all of them.

Considering there's a ring that can drastically decrease cast time, the power of a single ring slot is quite high. Although it really depends on your build. I'm aiming for Vanquishers, so I'm gonna need my ring slots.

it can be high. play the game with 3 ring slots or risk losing these 5 mil. souls i hold? decisions decisions.

I am at SL 123 now. I have no idea if I should level up or not.. I know its determined by soul memory but I guess I am hoping they patch in a soul level thing also, that way PvP can stay at the same level and active...

The character I got most of the trophies on was SL 160 and a hexer. She had about 3 million souls.

I mean, it would blow losing all those souls. I love how you can have all sorts of crazy ring setups, but as said before, it all depends on your build.

My hexer rolled with the Southern Ritual Band +2, Clear Bluestone Ring +2, and Ring of Life Protection. My fourth ring would rotate between Abyss Seal, Cloranthy Ring +2, or the +2 Serpent rings. I had a lot of freedom.

My headpiece was the hexer's hood and for the longest time, I wore the Lion Mage getup. The Clear Bluestone Ring +2 gives a big enough boost to cast time that I didn't have to wear the Lion Mage stuff anymore. I always keep the hexer's hood on unless I'm invading and trolling. In those cases, I'd wear the Xanthous q-tip head. And the mastodon pants.

How do you leave the arenas of fights with the old ones? Homeward bone? Does that take you to things betwixt?

I've been lighting the primal bonfires and using them to teleport to Majula. Using them don't count as using regular bonfires.

Homeward Bones/Darksign/Homeward miracle take you back to your last lit bonfire. For example, I'm in Majula and if I were to use one of those three, I'd be sent all the way back to the Black Gulch.

Did someone try Shrine of Amana after the patch already? As long as you move at all, the mages can't hit you anymore, since the spell lost 90% of its homing abilitiy. It's kind of sad.

Guess a lot of people will be happy though.

Thank god. I may be able to run through there then with my dual maces....

I'm doing a no-bonfire run and just got all four Old One souls. I now have a new appreciation for bonfires in this game.

I can't imagine playing like that but good for you on giving it a shot. How do you deal with weapon durability issues? Repair powder is limited, so do you have to change weapons all the time?

You die on purpose.
Repair is automatic on death.

Yup. Also weapons don't deteriorate that much if you're not using katanas. My method is pretty simple considering running from majula to lighting a primal bonfire takes up roughly half of my right hand weapon's quality. So I'll teleport back to Majula using the primal bonfire, spend all my souls on stuff, then jump off the cliff. My weapons are repaired, and all I have to do is teleport back to Majula and touch my bloodstain for <1000 souls.

This is nowhere as bad as I thought it would be. It's more annoying than anything with as much running you do early on.

Don't know how I managed to never notice that. Also, just so it's clear, you can light bonfires, you just can't rest at them for the challenge right?

Precisely. You only light them for convenience. You also have to make sure to light them strategically or else you may be stuck (Belfry Luna) or you will have to run a very long distance (imagine having to run from the end of the Undead Crypt to Majula).

Since I just got all 4 Old One souls, I'm planning out which bonfires I'm going to light as I make my way through Dranglelic Castle and onward to get the King's Ring.

my max. was around 1 million. i didn't want to play alone, that's why i kept my level at 170 up to ng++. my char is retired now.

i know many people hoard millions by now.

I think when you get past a certain threshold of soul level, you can be matched with anyone above the threshold regardless of the gap between players. But don't quote me on that.

My friend did that run and he recommends dropping small white signs every now and then. Once you get duty fulfilled, your estus are refilled and your gear is repaired.

This is good advice. I did something similar. I joined the bellbro covenant by talking to that midget dude, then immediately teleported back to the first bonfire you see when you visit the Bastille from the Forest. I put the ring on and chilled. I would invade people, and farm for Titanite Chunks. I was able to upgrade my maces significantly without worrying about deterioration.

Shrine of Amana was a cakewalk as caster, couple of well aimed lightning spears and it was done. Put my sign down and helped tons of people.

Warriors are cool until you repeatedly get lag backstabbed out of nowhere. Then you become a mage.

Melee gives me the hardest time in PvP if they know how to dodge my spells and never stand still. I normally shoot them with GRS to test them out. If they dodge toward me, I know I'm in for fun and that's when I start using my sword.

I've found DS2 much more palatable than (EDIT) DS1 in that respect. There is still some lag - I can't think of an online game where there isn't any - but it is nowhere near as bad.

I also think it would be neat if the battles between antagonistic covenants could influence something like world tendency, so that all players would have a stake in the outcome (and any prolonged spell of dominance would inspire players to join the other side in order to reverse world tendency and access unique items/events), but that's just a pet idea I'll be flogging around here.

Wow. This is actually a good idea.
Other than that I agree pretty much with most of what you said. Thanks for sharing your thoughts !

Can hollow invasions happen outside the Belfrys?

Because I think they are p much a success if that's the case.

Rarely got invaded, never hollowed outside the Belfrys.

I'm getting invaded pretty much everywhere since I went past 1M SM. Being hollow or not doesn't matter and I'm still in NG.

Most melee players are scared of mages though. But yeah, nothing like a good 1vs1 swordfight.

Yeah, they've improved the netcode a lot.

I was Dragon Dueling on the bridge yesterday, when was summoned and surprised by a full havel greatsword mage. I barely dealt any damage and was slaughtered by his damage. 15 minutes later or so, I was summoned by him again. This time, I ran away and buffed up, and I was able to kill him by getting in swift attacks and dodging any counter attack. He dropped 120k souls or so when I killed him, so I realized that he must have been a much higher soul level than me, I'm SL150. It just made it feel even better to kill him after that.

Holy shit, people online are monsters. There's a mr ruthless on x360 staying in the corner of the top room in Belfry Luna, next to the boss door, waiting for bellbros to invade him. In this corner when you're summoned you can't see him. Boom, backstab. After doing me he went back to that corner. Haha.

If you're in the Bellfry covenant you give up any right to expect fair play.

Ah ok I keep thinking you're not allowed to light bonfires as well.

Lol, I've learned from my experience with spawn campers and gankers in darkroot that you should always look around as much as you can when you spawn during an invasion.

It's the worst isn't it? I've had people waiting behind me with homing soul mass and firestorm at the ready. Thankfully people who do that tend to be crap at actually fighting so if you can escape their sneaky trap at the beginning you're usually alright.

New patch and calibrations lost sinner is pretty easy now. lucateil even stayed alive through the fight. I was having a lot of trouble with this boss fight yesterday, took her down first time this morning, Lucateil kept the boss occupied while I slaughtered the pyros in two hits each, I'm pretty sure they took more of a beating before the patch also.

That's a shame, that fight on ng+ and up was amazing in its difficulty.

That still doesn't sit well with me. :(
In my opinion the only enemies that need a nerf are the Shrine of Amana casters (just reducing their range would do wonders) and the Mace Drakekeepers with their infinite combos.

What's the soft SL ceiling for PVP builds?

I'm seeing lvl 150 a lot but honestly I don't think it matters too much in this game. Seems more of an arbitrary number than a "you will have a hard time getting into pvp beyond this" thing.

My first character is around lvl 230 and I still get invaded and can invade without any problems. The limit this time is more of a fair play limit I guess. xD

And soul memory is constantly increasing.

Pretty much, or for more organized pvp. I'm SL150 because I think it's nice, but I carry almost 2 million souls on me at all times.
