Knights of Sidonia Episode 1:

Oh yes, this was a much better introduction episode then the likes of Captain Earth, seriously the more I think about it, the shitter that show is looking right now. Anyway, I know some people have problems with the visuals being all CGI, I am not one of those people. I actually like all CGI shows, what I don't like is CGI and 2D animation interacting, it never looks all that good. Yea, the CGI was wonky in some places but after watching utter trash like RWBY and Beware The Batman this is practically Pixar level in comparison.

The bad stuff this season is worse than normal, it's just not something that someone that only watches a few shows a season would notice. There are a good or promising shows to watch, there just doesn't seem to be much middleground, the drop off from the few good shows is really steep. I suppose I'm just disappointed that nothing has really stood out except for proven entities (Jojo, Mushishi) and the sports shows.

Good

Jojo
Mushishi
Gochuumon wa Usagi
Haikyuu
Baby Steps

Too early to tell, but promising

The World is Still Beautiful
One Week Friends

Mediocre

Chaika –The Coffin Princess
Soul Eater Not

Disappointing

Captain Earth
Nanana's Buried Treasure
Bokuru wa Minna Kawaisou

Terrible, but morbidly interesting enough to watch a bit more

Mahouka
Black Bullet
Brynhildr

Dropped, nothing redeeming to be found

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san
Daimidaler
Akuma no Riddle
Blade and Soul
Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara
No Game No Life
Selector Infected WIXOSS

Haven't watched yet

Mekaku City Actors
Sidonia
Ping Pong

Good to see its not only me and DTL that liking Haikyuu!!, sport show truly getting more attention recently.

Also leftover from previous season, Ace of Diamonds seem gonna hitting the stride with its tournament arc. Good times for sport anime fan indeed.

The sports shows are saving the season.

The sports shows are saving the season.

Usagi is good? I would put it down as mediocre. Your average cute girls do jack shit shit while doing cute things show.

I realize that the only shows I'm watching, Haikyuu and Jojo, are adaptations of manga I read and love.
Rip original anime

Not watching Mushishi?

It may be a tad early to tell but Majin Bone is shockingly good and may be the dark horse of this season, at the very least it is watchable ans tolerable.

I agree. The characters are likeable, however I just skip the card nonsense/laughable cgi fights.

Yea, they need to work on that, but I will give this show kudos in having the chosen one actually struggle with his power and have him get acclimated as well as he can given the circumstances. I think that is one of the things that really pissed me off about Captain Earth, it just could not wait to get its protag into the mech at the expense of everything.

I'd say my rankings of the stuff I watched would be:

Great

Mushishi
Haikyuu
Ping Pong

Good
One Week Friends
Baby Steps

Average

Captain Earth
Mahouka

Horrible

No Game No Life

Oh hey I watched this a couple weeks ago (months? lol).

I... didn't care that much for it. I really enjoyed the beginning, the gags and character establishing were spot on, and the tunnel fight between the girl and the granny was the choice moment of animation for me (by Osamu Tanabe, no other than the unit/visual director of Kaguyahime and a recognized Ghibli vet as well!). I really liked the "what makes a woman a woman" gag too, lol.

I thought it started getting all over the place when it started getting more serious. I just didn't think it was called for or set-up that well, and the way the antagonists acted around, even if maybe realistic for their characters, was a bit too jarring considering the stakes. I also felt that the storyboarding and framing of scenes started getting sloppier, like the director wasn't that good at handling that compared to more lighthearted, 'adventure' feely scenes. And a lot of side characters which worked perfectly on as devices for the main girl became more relevant, and as such ended up feeling underdeveloped.

Iso's part is also not a particularly great showing (the fight in the palace at night where the main girl knocks out a guy with a brick), either :p

That tunnel fight (that whole part, really) was surprisingly good. There was some really detailed hand animation. I had no idea which part was Iso's, but he's one of the few animation names I actually recognize.

I get where you're coming from about the ending not being set up well. Particularly when the rebellion sets in, it's pretty arbitrary. I guess a few things were sacrificed to fit it in their proscribed TV running time. The last half may be weaker than the first, but for me a few moments worked well enough to feel good about it, like how the cannon was used, or the whole progression of Ginga's attempt to see the Emperor and its immediate aftermath.

If they'd nailed the storytelling from beginning to end I'd have to recommend it a lot more strongly, but it was good enough to leave an impression on me, especially since I had pretty much never heard of it before watching it.

I do have only Knights of Sidonia, Ping Pong and The Comic Artist and Assistants as short anime wild card on my watchlist right now.

Watching more than a handful shows will only lead to a burnout.

Oh I loved the cannon scene. Purely for the sakuga, lol. The staff list was actually my main motivation for watching it, I wasn't expecting it to be really good because if it was we'd probably see it pimped fairly more in general. But it's obviously not outright terrible, I'd say it's just uneven.

This is probably old news to most of you guys, but I've been out of the loop for some time, and I just watched that updated sakuga panel at Anime Central in Chicago, some truly excellent stuff, a really good starting point for getting into Japanese animation.

I assume most people here saw it, but for those that haven't, here's the playlist.

I've seen it before but in much, much worse quality. This is much better, thanks.

Neon Genesis Evangelion 11

Asuka really is the worst, such an annoying brat.

Asuka is the only thing that makes the Shinji&Rei depression tag team bearable.

Worse quality? Or are you talking about the original version which was removed. This is their revised 2013 version.

I think it was just a recording of this done by someone in the audience, much farther from the back and without the subs or clips inserted directly into video.

Saw it about two months ago so I assume it wasn't the original version.

Knights of Sidonia 1

At first, the animation in this just looks bizarre. Character movement looks unnatural and robotic with weird hitching, just watching the lip movement when characters talk is distracting. But by the end of the episode I had already started to get used to it, and it looks a lot better when not focused on human characters. It also has some nice background art. The setting/premise are interesting enough for me to keep watching.

Is there an alternative website for webm creation/hosting than that pomf.se one? It's blocked by the firewall I'm behind for being a "malicious website" for some reason so I can neither see nor create any. I wanted to out together some clips of my favourite bits from the first episodes this season without wading through GIF creation again (it took me about an hour to do one clip from Niji-iro Hotaru!)

The sakuga booru is blocked for being pornographic as well :(

Blame...

Satoshi Urushihara and his projects.

The Anime for me so far

Mahouka
Captain Earth
Hunter X Hunter
Haikyuu
Black Bullet
No Game No Life (maybe)

As for labeling whether an anime is good or bad is a bit too early for a first episode, because it could either end up great or terrible.

knights of sidonia - 1

it's quite detailed everywhere and I like the stylized shading they have but boy it's so stiff :(
Just thinking how good this could be if it was just made in 60 fps, I don't think even it would be more expensive really. I feel they just want to mimic low frame 2D animation and it will never work.

Will keep watching for now for photosynthesis sci-fi space mecha nonsense.

I had semi dropped Mikakunin because I was not that crazy about the weird business of the fiancee by surprise, it was weird to me.

But I have watched the two first episodes and I am having fun, it´s quite adorable and got some laughs out of it.
