I think 'Salty Dog' and 'Macbeth Revolution' takes the cake for the worst names/titles/techbabble-lang so far. Feels like there's this simple story here buried underneath a layer of implications that I don't think they'll be able to resolve. I just want Daichi to show them his boomerang and blow things up, man.

Writers gotta write man.

What is Salty Dog a reference to? I Googled it and got a brand of crisps/chips, but otherwise I have no idea what it has to do with anything.

Macbeth and Puck are much more my wheelhouse :p

They're not even using the songs? RIP Jin.

Well, the OP is a new song (no Vocaloids, though), and I might have heard instrumental parts of Artificial Enemy or other songs in this episode... or not (will check this later). But it doesn't look like they'll be used as proper insert songs.

On the Madoka discussion... I just don't understand why Madoka
didn't wish for something more reasonable in the first place. There are so many things she could have wished that would fix everything...

It was a clear case of middle ground.

No matter what , there is a need for energy from the incubators and that is something that can't be avoided., she is too pure to make them vanish and there is the fact that everyone is fated to despair..by focusing on those 3 point she reached this conclusion .. a flawed conclusion but a conclusion.
The fact that is rebellion homura
didn't erase what madoka did , but just made some changes, especially regarding the incubators existence just show how problemenatic this mess they were in was

Captain Planet He's A Hero 2

I like Daichi. He has guts but not overbearing confidence. He seems to catch on to things fairly quickly and isn't annoyingly anti-establishment. The rest of the characters still haven't gotten much development besides "I'm a genius girl with snark" and "we're two alien-like kids with a sweet side". Also there's conspiracies and shit. It also looks like Jesse and James
are somewhat of an item, or Jesse holds feelings for James at least
which of course will make it sad when one of them is about to die. If this really is like Star Driver, they'll have a moment of redemption later on in the show and maybe even switch sides.

The episode had plot plot plot. Also a guy named Salty Dog, or at least I think that's his name, whose attitude and looks give off a rapey vibe, considering how he's always near his brown sugar and seems almost obsessive with her. ED and preview make it seem like the four lead kids will get together and become bestest friends, with possible romantic pairs already set up in the ED and OP. Star Driver without "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS TO LOVE TWO BOYS AT THE SAME TIME"? Count me in.

Maybe Yoji Enokido just really likes the word "libido".

It ties into the Orgone energy stuff(that actually has its own wiki page). We'll see how it plays out but the actual background scenario has seemingly had some thought put into it, possibly more so than Star Driver.

Well the character was salty and he's a dog?

Why can't people who want to talk about an anime which has an OT talk about it in the OT instead? I can understand if people don't really want to talk about a show and just want to dump impressions in the animegaf thread instead to acknowledge they've watched it, but if there's actual discussion and people would rather do it in a cluttered megathread instead of the proper OT for the show, it's pretty disheartening.

I'll do a long post later in the OT. Just traveling now, so doing quick response posts.

I agree, and it would help to have all the OT's listed in the OT for the main thread because if you don't happen to be around when a shows OT gets bumped you might not even know it exists.

Space Brothers 1

Will say, this was quite a first episode, one that's definitely easy to relate to as well.

Gonna continue as I can, slowly.

Which shows have OT's this season. Perhaps people are unawares?

I think people want to talk about it in this thread with the people in this thread.

So confused every time someone calls it "Captain Planet" in this thread :D Is that actually a thing now or is it a honest fuckup?

Edit: alright, seems to be a thing :)

Wait just a minute here.

This show has a Dullahan?!?

AKA one of the best monster girls ever?

Is there more girls I should be aware of? Or is she going to be the only one?

Holy crap this is SHAFT as absolute hell. And I'm talking full on SZS/Monogatari-style SHAFT as hell. Also I have no idea what's going on except AIs and NEETs and keyboards are serious business and red eyes and whhhhhat.

I'm not sure what to think of this so far.

People don't live in threads, or at least they should not be encouraged to. That's the fundamental point. NeoGAF is an overall forum community. The same people talking about something in this thread can also talk about it in a thread which is better suited for that topic. It is moderation's responsibility to encourage this and push people who are getting too isolated in a single thread to interact in more relevant threads on the forum itself.

It's interesting to see people starting this, since I personally think the show only really gets going at around 30 or so. But maybe people won't see it as a super slow burn like I did.

Watched like 60 episodes. Dropped it when the manga got licensed in my country. Now I'm reading the volumes, it feels like I'll never reach the part the anime was at when I stopped watching. Oh well, at least it's the best seinen of the decade with Oyasumi Punpun so it's still an amazing read.

Probably help that it's something I generally dig when I'm watching a show.
Probably the same reason why Samurai Flamenco's first episode didn't bother me like it did with many people.

Nisekoi 14

Okay Marika definitely works much better animated than she does in manga form.

Dat Kana Asumi.

Agreed, never liked Marika in the manga but this anime version is great. I'm still don't know anime VAs all that well but Kana seems like a great one

Altough when it comes to Nisekoi, I like every girl in a way. There are all cute, nice and deserve to be happy.

This I can get behind, I think (though it'll never end that way) I'm on Team Seishirou

Yay more people watching Space Bros. with me. Admittedly it's a slow burn with the speed of the events, but the lead and Phoenix Wright make it all worth it. I'm in the late 30's as of yesterday night and already shed tears of happiness for Mutta. I'll probably take a bit of a break until today at night.

Mahouka 2

Dat onii-sama absolutely wrecking. Honestly as of right now it feels like a manga adaptation might be where this shines the most (outside of the LN) since there's a lot of talking and it isn't done especially well in anime form. Like there's something eerie about the lack of emotions in general, and not only those of onii-sama. Maybe once this gets past what the manga currently has I'll become a bit more interested, which admittedly isn't 'terribly' far away depending on how many episodes they plan to do. But it'll probably be 12 episodes.

Oh yeah, Nisekoi 14 aired didn't it.

I watched it. It was fine. There's very little to say about this series because it's so fundamentally generic and bland, even with the occasionally well directed scene here and there it's just pretty hard to talk about.

Fairy Tail - 177

If there's one thing I REALLY didn't care for in this arc, it's the
alternating views between Natsu and the gang saving Lucy and the GMG, which starts now. Ugh

Hopefully we'll get some better views on the fights this time around. The fights in the manga...weren't exactly favourable. But I'm hoping the anime handles them better.

As to discussing the show, I don't know if I care enough about the show to discuss it fully outside of episode impressions. If it's anything like the HxH OT, which I don't mind since I care about that, it'd be a bit too much. Maybe once more episodes happen I'll stop by. But for the most part it's true that HxH doesn't have most of the folks here I enjoy talking with.

It's a show that's probably the most honest about its wishfulfillment fantasies. A bit like that harem with the guy who lives with the angels that people seemed to like. Of course, it's anime, so it's easier being horny than it is to just have any kind of release (well, I suppose they release through violence in this universe), but hey, it's a show about a guy who gets his power from groping breasts. Japanese fandom in a nutshell.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Review
key_art_madoka_magica.jpg

****Spoiler Warning****

Summary:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (henceforth referred to as Madoka Magica) is a magic girl anime following the story of Madoka and the magic girls she meets over the course of the story. The anime is pretty deceiving with it's first episode and OP. This is not for the faint of heart. This is actually quite the dark anime and some would probably call it tragic. As you go through the anime you learn what the magic girls truly have to give up in order to poses the power that they have.

In this world magic girls fight witches. Usually born from familiars (but there are.... other ways...) witches are powerful beings who kill humans with their curses. It is up to magic girls to traverse these dangerous areas witches have created to find and destroy them. If they are destroyed a Grief Seed is dropped and these can be used to purify ones Soul Gem. A Soul Gem has to be purified so the magic girls can use their magic in battle to the full extent if need be
(and for other obvious reasons)
.

There are several points during the show were the creators felt like they needed to show you just how dangerous and dark this world really is and promptly start to do some quite horrific crap. I was quite surprised by some of the early ones but after those I was able to infer what would happen next. Time travel is brought in at the tail end of the anime but it was pretty obvious in this regard too given how the early episodes played out.

The Characters:

Madoka - The title character. A very sweet girl who actually doesn't know the horrors of being a magic girl and really doesn't understand until about mid way into the show. I actually really liked Madoka and like some characters in the show said, she was too nice for her own good. However, if she wasn't the way she was we wouldn't have got the ending that we did.

Homura - She is actually the second most important character to the show rivaling that of Madoka although you wouldn't know that if you watched the earlier episodes. She has some pretty cool
Time Magic
that she uses greatly to her advantage. She's actually kind of a badass and her evolution of a character is greatly expounded upon in episode 10. Her arc is probably the strongest of all the characters in the show

Sayaka - Pretty much Madoka's best friend who just had the "luck" to become a magic girl before Madoka. Her story is more on the tragic side and I was legitimately sad by the end of her story. No tears but more of a "wow, this is a sucky situation". She is one of my favorite people in the show based on personality alone in the earlier episodes. The very ending to her story confused me a bit in episode 12 but we'll get to that.

Mami - Honestly, the most badass character of the show. She is actually quite the sweet girl. I wish we saw more episodes with her and saw her fight more because honestly her fight scenes were always the coolest to watch compared to everyone else. Her fights in the early episodes makes everyone else look comparably not as skilled and not as bad ass.

Kyoko - Last but not least we have this magic girl. Now while I don't think she was as cool as Homura or Mami, she was a skilled fighter in her own right. In the first episode we saw her I didn't really like her and by the end of her story I still didn't love her. However, they were able to redeem her character in such a short span of time that I came around to actually liking her. I just wish this show was just a bit longer to show
more of these last three characters because I feel they weren't around long enough to make their absence really felt. By the ending episodes you really weren't thinking about them.

Kyubey - This little F'er. Nothing else needs to be said about this thing other than I hated this thing throughout the series. Maybe that has more to do with the logic put behind the character but it still doesn't change the fact that these things basically have no soul.

The Story/Plot:

I explained most of the story and plot in the summary but I wanted to expound upon what I liked and didn't like. At the end of the day what they did to characters to create this dark world I liked. It really did a great job at making the viewer engaged and react in certain ways. It did this all throughout the anime from
Mami's death to Sayaka turning into a witch to Kyoko dying with Sakaya trying to bring her back to even Madoka's final wish
. This anime wanted to put a void in you. I admired that it tried and I am sure for some it did create "the void".

It didn't do that to me though for whatever reason. Actually it was probably the ending of the show that prevented me from feeling the void. Because of Madoka basically
becoming a God and making a pretty crazy wish
, it reverberated throughout the story and world. Now because of this and the
alternate time lines created by Homura
it made the last few scenes very confusing on several levels.

With Madoka's
wish, soul gems no longer once tainted could turn people into witches. Therefore witches were replaced with wraiths. On top of this once a soul gem becomes too tainted it just shatters all the impurities and becomes pure again. This is explained after a scene in a different world thanks to Madoka where Sayaka still becomes a witch for whatever reason and is taken by Madoka up into a higher plane or whatever
. It was stuff like this at the end that made the show feel really inconsistent with it's planning at the end. This is a plot hole that Madoka Magica will have to deal with unless it gets retconned by a movie or second season.

The Music:
The ED Full
All the music for the show was very appropriately placed. Going with the tone of deception some of the music was peppy and lighthearted with some of the darker and best tracks of the show being played when entering into the witches world. The best track of the show though is the one in the link above.

The Animation/Art:
1615.gif

As you can see in the above gif, this show had some pretty wonderful action scenes. Abstract art was used extremely well when going into the witches world/domain. It was one of the few instances where I felt the abstract art worked within the context of an anime. The faces and dead eyes bothered me throughout the entire show but it wasn't a detriment to my experience. It was just something that nagged on me at least once or twice an episode. But again that was just me. Otherwise the art and animation for the show was pretty fantastic.

Conclusion Statement(s):

While I have a few gripes with the show (especially the inconsistency with plot elements at the end), Madoka Magica is a pretty wonderful show that is easy to watch because of it's short episode span. The characters are easy to get attached to and it tells it's story in an easy enough manner for most people to understand. The ending in of itself wasn't bad, it was actually quite the satisfactory ending, but as I stated earlier because of magic and
time travel
it leaves some plot holes that shouldn't have been there after Madoka's
wish
.

-PshycoNinja

Thanks for taking the time to do this. One of my top favorite animes at this point.
I showed Madoka Magica to a friend of mine after he kept putting it off and he was astounded by it, and he has seen anime since the late 70s. There is osmething visceral about the way the show presents itself. Something very special that puts it above most other shows I think. Its not just the quirkiness of Shaft but the way the world was carefully constructed, made sense in the universe, and resolved the story in a non-standard way for a mahou shoujo. Just a really creative and once in a lifetime mix of elements that just WORKED.
Speaking of which, I opened the package with the Rebellion movie and it looks stunning.
Cant wait to watch it.

Mekaku City Actors

Fucking awesome. Definitely check this out my fellow Shaft fans.

Noted.

Is it okay to admit I enjoy Nisekoi a lot? The whole premise with the childhood promises aplenty is really really stupiid, however the show is pretty funny and I dunno it keeps me pretty entertained. Also dat SHAFT.

Sure its ok! Its always ok to admit to enjoying something. Dont worry about perceptions.

For me it would be the final scene of full moon wo sagashite.

It's kinda hard to explain why this scene got me but it left a mark in my mind.
Best good ending i could hope coming from a show that has a very ill heroine.

Noooo
Avoid.
I wish i could get my 12* 24 minutes of my life back.

There is ONE goof fight scene in this anime and it's between 2 characters you haven't met yet that are legitimately great but the show direction ruined what could have been a good moment.

They rushed the source material in half the time they should have taken to adapt all this source material.

I Just don't understand why this S.A.V.E thing exist ...it's ugly as hell.... Did nobody in the USA told them to change this ugly green design ?

You should really see the third movie.

Feel like a place where everyone can shit on mahouka rather than a place to discuss ..Subscribed for now.

That scene to me is one of the most perfect endings in anime. It ties everything together so well and combined with the music it just gave me the feels something fierce. Damn what a great ending. Mitsuki is such a sweetheart.

Sorry, Team Onodera here.
Altough when it comes to Nisekoi, I like every girl in a way. There are all cute, nice and deserve to be happy.

This is true. I pick Onodera but theyre all great girls and you cant "lose".

Well get that wasn't bad. I was expecting more treasure hunting but I guess we shouldn't be getting them right from the straight of the show.

No one seems annoying from the start which is a plus. I guess it's hard to say what I feel about this since it has a good start but don't really know what the show is aiming for enough. Which actually means I do want to keep watching.

I tell a lie, there is a thing worth mentioning in Nisekoi and it's Chitoge's amazing hair ribbon which, like Araragi's sticking-out hair, is practically a character in it's own right. Great stuff.

Then I suppose I can fairly confidently say that it's the author learning to grow into the work then. It's certainly a learning process though.

The
first capsule arc... still gives me nightmares

In all seriousness though, that guy looks far too much like Araragi. SHAFT, please, sort yourselves out. This is just confusing.
