Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

People who invade Black Gulch are the worst. Had the same guy come in twice yesterday and tried to get me while I was clearing statues/giants. Beat me the first time, and second got me right to the edge of death with a mlg pro halberd spin as I was killing the second giant. Was able to heal to full as he tried to finish me with some Avelyns and it was so satisfying having that entire bottom chamber empty to fight him in without having to dodge statues.

9 million.

Mages everywhere. Sometimes I get someone that looks a like melee, then he/she whacks out dark resonant weapon/sunlight blade and starts spamming lightning spear -___-

When you get that high up it becomes hard to not have a bunch of stats in magic stuff. Still, only time I pull out the magic is when someone else is trying to cheese me to death.

Just had a fucking weird experience on NG+. I thought it was just a NG+ change so I went back again but apparently not.

Came from the first B
rightstone
C
ove
bonfire and went down the hill, past the
two boulder traps and the peasant mob that follows.
After killing the mob, I hear a big crashing sound, like someone throwing more boulders. Then a boss bar turns up on the bottom of the screen, reading
The Duke's Dear Freja.
Walk round the corner and the the boss is right there in front of the door, flailing around around at the edge of the cliff. I didn't attempt to kill it in case it fucked up my Benhart achievement in some way. Jumped off a cliff then went back down again and nothing. The fuck was that about?

Finished my slvl 1 run yesterday.
No name, no starting gift, no summons.
Jesus Christ was that a bumpy ride. Maybe I just kinda suck but I died soooo many times, especially on
Velstadt
and
Throne Watcher and Defender
.
I feel satisfied though. Time to return to a more relaxing character.

After around 25 kills it's time to take a break from the rat covenant. The rats that will move into the round room at the start stopped respawning so I had to kill quite a few of them on my own. I started hiding behind the first wall after the round room, and it's amazing how many people who fall for it and just go YOLOing in, giving me a free backstab. I love fighting guys who try to lightning spear me. So easy to dodge and punish. For PVP at relatively low to middle SL/SM I find meelee-only guys to be the hardest to deal with.

This is an NG+ event. Apparently it is weakened in the main fight if you attack it here.

I recently did it myself and got a few hits in. But I also read it comes back 5 times, which it did not - so I guess you basically have that first chance to get some extra damage in. Not sure what happens, or if you can even, kill it there. Anyone know?

Haha, this is exactly what I did, hid behind the first wall and then run out when they were distracted with the rats. I'm on NG+ and still swimming in lockstones.

I also re-joined the covenant before NG+ and did the grave first thing so I got it out of the way and didn't get a taste of my own medicine, bwaahaha.

That is NG+ addition. You can
take half of Frejas life bar at that point and then he leaves and when you meet him again at the boss room he has only half of his health left
. One of my favorite additions in NG+.

I just realized I haven't upgraded any piece of armor yet, and don't really feel the need to. Seems like it's better to use Bones/Twinkling Titanites on weapons... How do you others do it?

It just goes back down. I emptied its life bar.

Bollocks. Had I known that, I would have gotten into her. Sucks that she only turned up once, I thought the game was temporarily borked. I should have to stuck to my regular Dark Souls mantra; If in doubt, smack it's face in.

Where should I head after beating the primal at Iron Keep? I opened up a door in the Shaded Woods which led to Drangleic Castle, but that didn't feel like the next place to go.

It is I believe if you've already gone through doors of pharros and brightstone cove.

so much fun invading in the Undead Crypt, you can even ring the bells. dropping prism stones all over the place is also amusing. next I'm going to try to use those 99 corrosive urns.
too fucking bad that cracked red eye orbs are 10k each, or you need to win a duel in the bloodbros covenant.

anyway, Profound Still is kind of stupid. it should also silence the caster, not just the enemy. I feel bad for using it.

I noticed a weird trend in Dark Souls 2 discussions about how the game looks, especially in respect to the gameplay reveal.

While I think that there was a downgrade in general lighting quality, I stand by my opinion that most of the changes are related to specific choices that FROM made to make the game more playable, because the extreme contrast, extreme darkness and crushed blacks of the gameplay reveal would have made basically all indoor areas unplayable due to the fact that you couldn't see the enemies before they came very near to you even using a torch.

But in the side-by-side comparisons between gameplay reveal and retail game, like these for example, the retail game images look very bad mostly because the brightness at which these images were taken is completely wrong.

In fact, every time I read someone writing that DS2 "looks like crap" they always refer to these images or videos, and when someone writes that "the torch is not needed" I think that both criticisms come from an incorrect brightness setting while playing the game.

To me, the game should be played with the in-game brightness set all down to 0, and without strong backlighting from the TV (this obviously also depends on the current light level of your room). Also, high contrast (white levels) and mid-to-low brightness on your TV settings help. Setting in-game brightness to 0 brings all the darkness everyone is craving for, and makes the torch practically essential to properly navigate caves and close environments. Also, it makes the game look really gorgeous: even with the downgrade, and the fact that the lights are not always consistent - not every source of light casts shadows, but I guess this is related to resources optimization - the lighting is beautiful to look at. The real ugliness, in my opinion, comes from the fact that certain specific areas have repeated textures that look bad and break immersion, but that's another story.

Can you link to it? I'm only seeing ones that work with v1.0

That's the one. Just delete the patch and go offline until you get to Drangleic Castle. Then you're good to reinstall the patch.

Edit-beat

Edit 2-though, I would advise playing through Ng+ normally as you'll need the four lord souls to trade to Straid for spells.

Anybody know of a strength weapon that scales to S? Would really like to use something other than the great club. Been using my Dex weapons since I have 40 Strength and 40 Dex, but I would like to switch it up and use both. I am getting tired of only using the great club for my strength build.

Large Club scales with S I think.

Got to
giant memories
. Are load times the ultimate enemy? I say yes.

edit: it wouldn't be so bad if Heide Pike didn't have trouble hitting them...

Yeah, I'm starting to realize this. : Shitty that I kind of wasted all that twinkling on the Sunset staff... think I'll respec as int/sorc and build a pure hexer later.

What's the best class for a hexer? Cleric?

So when does Caitha outdamage Bellvine? With higher faith/lower int, I take it?
My hexer started as a sorc. Cleric is fine too. Not sure when caitha outpaces bellvine.
Just use the farming trick for twinkling.

Yep, the gamma settings are fucked up in this game. The default setting makes the game look like crap...right now I have the gamma setting to 2 IIRC with my HDTV calibrated (to avoid black crushes) for expanded reference levels set on my 360 and the colors/shadows look much much more vibrant/deep.

A friend recently came to my house while I was playing DSII and was surprised by how much better it looked on my TV set. I haven't seen such bad default gamma settings in a game since the 360 version of Portal 2 (actually that was even worse).

Yeah, I considered doing that. I don't have any, but the stone trader sells one. Thing is, I'm not sure which bonfire to use it on. Don't want to waste it. Also, if it's the second one, that means I would have to deal with NG++ Royal Rat Vanguard on NG+. Not sure whether I could handle that. Anyway I read there's another area to rat Bro in. Maybe I should just take a break from the covenant until I get there. I have a lot of lockstones now, which makes me think I will have a fun time there.

Yeah I'm swimming in them too. Even after activating all devices in the Grave of Saints I have 20 left. Good tip about joining the covenant again before NG+. Then again I don't really mind being summoned. Happened to me twice and I had fun both times.

It's most likely the first bonfire.

It's the first bonfire. Don't worry about NG++ and onward. The jump in difficulty is minimal compared to the one from NG to NG+.

Wow 500 wins in Brotherhood of Blood for Great Chaos Fireball?? Not only that but you have to have 500 more wins than losses plus Cracked Red Eye Orbs cost 10k a piece.

By the time anyone comes close to that their SM would be so high I doubt they would even be able to invade many people.

At least just make it 500 wins. The requirements seems a bit much for most people.

I'm not convinced that the "500 more wins than losses" part is true. The latest patch said that it fixed a bug where BoB required 50 more wins than it should have required, which might have caused these rumors about a loss giving -1 to the score (for ranks 1 or 2 at least).

Creighton's set is so delicious. The helm itself is hideous, but slap on that Heide Knight helm you get from a chest in the Cathedral of Blue... Swagleic.
Fuck helms, I always show my character's sexy bearded face. xD Well, sometimes I wear hoods at the most (my mage wears Desert Priestess hood for the +3 int and it looks cool on her). But yes, Creighton's chainmail is one of my favourite armours of the game.

Too bad I don't have a capture card, I have some really nice looking toons.

Nah I tested it yesterday. Bought 99 orbs and started keeping track of Tokens of Spite. After 63 still not Rank 1. I lost maybe 15-20.

Yes, you have to fiddle with settings both in-game and on your set, unfortunately. On PS3, I've set my HDMI range to Full and actually turned the brightness up in-game. The game now looks great, with very minimal to no crushing.

You mean 63 orbs, or 63 wins?

edit: 63 tokens of spite i guess. I see, it might be that way then. It's strange that people reported ranking after 50 (wins-losses) when the patch note said that the bug caused you to need more than 50 wins.

Ohhh, it's finally done, after 70 hours. I don't understand half of what happened though, and there's a whole bunch of weird items left in my inventory that I don't know how to use. Now, to immediately new game + or not to...

Strangely at my SM of like 42.5M, I actually see half and half. Half the time it's melee users with few spells (only to buff their weapons or disable my spells) or actual magic users.

Maybe cause I am a caster myself, but I don't have an issue with other magic users. And I don't have an issue when people disable my spells, I just resort to my nice sword.

Yeah Tokens of Spite. I am on NG+ so at the most I only have 3 tokens of spite from playthroughs. No way I had 13 without invading.

I won at least 50 maybe lost about 20 or had host cross boss fog after I came in. I still have 10 orbs left.

Maybe it worked for some but not for me I will use the rest later today and see if I can hit rank 1.

New to pvp.

Is it bad form to use estus flasks/health buffs?

Are you talking about invasions/being invaded or duels? Being invaded/invading anything goes really. Duels however it's considered kinda cheap to do so for healing.

I assume by health buffs you are talking about that spell that increases your health by 20%? I think that is likely fair no matter what.

Yeah, you're probably right. I haven't tried it for myself after the patch.
