Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Look.

Let's be honest with ourselves.

K.Rool was neither interesting enough or around long enough to be memorable. He changed every game, appeared only at the very end, and had a design that could most generously be described as "Not the worst thing Rare has made."

Whatever nostalgia you have imprinted on to this character with his incredibly dumb pun name probably doesn't hold up to the light of day.

No Smash In The Wild?

This is getting me hyped for SSB4 since it'll be faster than Brawl but slower than Melee.

Lately, watching/playing any kind of Smash gets me excited for 4. It's so weird to think that it's going to be here pretty soon.

With the Smash direct, the Team Curse announcements, and then this tournament, we've been getting a lot of hype lately. Even Mario Kart 8 is just going to seem like an appetizer for when Smash hits.

Are we absolutely sure that Ridley won't be playable? I don't see why he didn't just show Ridley when he said that instead of showing its shadow. It might be another trick.

Chorus Boys sounds hilarious and something I now want.

Pretty sure what was shown during the direct was just a stage hazard, though I think there's probably more to it.

I hate to be that guy, but come on. Ridley is too big. It's common sense.

I know it's been posted a thousand times, but this would be perfect. If Sakurai really wanted to make Ridley playable, he could easily find a way to modify some proportions. Maybe create a Smash Bros. version of Ridley that's a conglomeration of various separate designs.

With the Other M designs for Samus and ZSS being used, it makes me feel that it's unlikely for us to randomly get the Super Metroid design for Ridley. If that's the case, then Ridley is probably just going to be a stage hazard. *shrug*

EDIT: Combining elements of Ridley's multiple designs into one sounds pretty good though.

I noticed a couple of small things on the official Facebook page that I don't recall being discussed here.

This appears to be the score results screen to one of the modes (Classic?) in the Wii U game with the player's Global Smash Power. We already know from the Direct that GSP is based on results from offline-play, this might give a better idea of how GSP calculated.

The page also posted an official render Wireframe Mac (they haven't posted an male Wii Fit Trainer render yet, though).

My two big problems with this mockup are one, Ridley is too wide with the tail (yes Bowser is also wide, and Charizard is wide but he looks positively tiny in this compared to Ridley), and the big one, the hitbox is all over the place. Like if you run into his tail, is that bad? It looks pointy. Is it going to move around or just hang out there? If you punch it, or one of his wings, does that count as a hit? Presumably other champions also have weird disjointed hitboxes but this looks especially awkward compared to Bowser or even Charizard.

Just cut off the tail! And maybe make him kawaii, and perhaps change the color.

Also Bowser is really big in that. His normal standing pose seems less wide, kind of like this:

And I guess it depends on what he's doing, like this:

Speaking of hitboxes, given the video of wireframe Mac, I feel like using that skin is a huge advantage because it is so hard to see compared to the normal skin. Maybe I'll be wrong? It reminds me of certain League of Legends skins where particle effects become quite difficult to see.

I always thought that that Ridley mockup made him way too small.

Like, Ridley is big. I feel like you could still preserve that pretty well without making him so big as to be ridiculous, though. You don't need to shrink him - if he no longer looks large in comparison to Samus then you have a problem.

A mode where Ridley could be controlled by one player as a boss, and the other players defeat him, might be a way to both make him big and appease some people who want him playable.

I think he's ugly and wouldn't mind if he was out of the game completely, but I realize others disagree.

I think it's safe to assume that absolutely no one that wants Ridley playable would be appeased by a "boss mode" variation, haha. I know I wouldn't.

A boss mode could be pretty neat, though. It'd be cool to at least be able to officially play as Master Hand.

Exactly. I love Ridley, but he shouldn't be playable. I don't want him to shrink. He's supposed to be a massive beast.

This is probably beating a thoroughly worn side of this dead horse, but my biggest conceptual issue with playable Ridley is that most of his encounters feature him almost permanently flying. That size mockup up there throws me every time, not just because his proportions or relative scale are odd, but because that melee-ready stance doesn't jive with how I've ever experienced the character. He's an aerial threat through and through in a way that I don't know can be balanced within Smash's ruleset while still ending up with something that feels like you're actually playing Ridley.

Yeah, that's probably my biggest issue with that particular mockup - Ridley just looks awkward in it. However, there's an easy way around it in my eyes - make him crawl on the ground just like he does in the Prime games.
RidleySize_zps6419c259.png

He can be terrifying and huge in the air but reasonably small and compact on the ground - which presents an interesting conundrum. Does the player stay on the ground where they are inherently safer, or do they take to the air where Ridley is much more powerful but also more vulnerable?

Make him like a reverse Little Mac and have his attacks get weaker when he's grounded? And then when he's in the air he's really powerful, but has a giant hitbox. That's a cool idea.

I'd have to rewatch the Direct to be sure, but I think GSP is related to online play, is it not?

When I first saw the GSP reveal, I couldn't help but feel they're like DBZ's power levels =p

GSP is offline play I'm pretty sure.

The weird thing about it is it should increase every time someone new plays the game. You could do absolutely nothing and have your rank go up lol.

If you have to do a grounded Ridley I'll certainly take a pose like that over anything bipedal. He should slink, and stalk, and pounce, and generally be as inhuman as possible.

Sakurai made it sound like it was tied to everything you did in Smash Bros

GSP is offline play I'm pretty sure.

Rewatching the Direct... GSP is not linked to online battles, but to scoring competitions that players do. Online/offline scoring competitions not specified.

EDIT: There is a written mention of "Scoring Competitions in Solo Play", so likely offline and the score is uploaded
