Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Something has been bothering me. Have we not seen a single instance of anyone getting star KOed yet? Not even in the 3DS footage have we seen that. It's kind of odd that at this point of development that it hasn't been implemented in the game yet.

Oh, and here's a Brawl GIF of the day in a totally vain attempt to one-up Anth0ny to give some more diversity.

Not even a screen KO.

We also haven't seen character entries.

I think the next vet will be Ness. He and CF have seniority, and CF gets clamored for a lot, so I think Sakurai the Troll will reveal Ness instead. Maybe even drop a misleading hint about no/few more vets being included.

Well, at least character entries not being shown yet has a reasonable excuse. The star KO/front-screen KO is still not in the game as shown in the recent Nintendo Direct, where it was explicitly shown that people die off the top the same way as they die off the sides/bottom.

I mean, I just find it odd that a feature that has been present in all of the previous Smash games has not been added into this game yet, when it's about to be released in about 4-5 months. I would figure that getting the KO mechanics to work correctly would be a priority during development.

I have a feeling Star/Screen KOs have been eliminated to get rid of the delay of score updates. If you KO someone, it should change your score immediately.

For example, in past games, if we both get KOd with 1 stock from an explosion, but I flew into the sky and you flew to the side, I win. Doesn't matter who had more damage or who hit the edge boundary first, since I had an extra 1.5 seconds before my stock was consumed.

The easy fix to that is remove the stock as soon as the character hits the edge boundary, but keep the animation as a means to add a time delay before the character re-enters play (if he does at all), which I assume was the intention for doing those in the first place.

Really? I thought that the intention of implementing star/front-screen KOs was because they are hilarious as heck.

Perhaps the first time, sure. After that, the novelty mostly wore off.
Except when it's Pikachu or Jigglypuff, then hearing their screams trail off in the distance makes it ever so awesome.

Pikachu's star KO scream in Smash 64 is still my favorite out of all of them lol.

I suggested y'all to watch Super Smash Bros Brawl trailers and y'all will notice same things that they didn't show it for first 3 trailers; maybe all of the trailers. They had it off just for trailers to speed it up I guess.

Maaaan playing Brawl I just killed myself three times in one match by using Wolf's side special off an edge when I tried to go sideways with his up special.

Sakurai pls fix

About time link upgraded to ultima weapon a plasma saber. Also hope the fire bar has an unusually long variation like in super mario bros.

This.

I'm pretty sure they implement star KO's as one of the last things since it's probably just a small tweak.

Wasn't it because both Mewtwo and Roy were near "complete" but got shafted due to constraints caused by Sonic?

No.
All of the "X got cut because of sonic" is speculation anyway, but here's what we know:
- Sonic was the last character to be added, since the team couldn't use him beforehand.

- Mewtwo was the very last character to be cut, and he has the most references to his name within the code of the game. That includes a dummy audio file that was for the Wiimote select sound. It would seem he got the boot very last minute, and since he was the last character to get cut, and Sonic was a character they added last minute (probably because Nintendo's chairs asked for it), means it's very likely that the resources that would otherwise have gone to finishing up Mewtwo were spent on doing Sonic and his assets (stage, SSE cutscene, etc.).

- Roy was very likely the second-to-last character to be cut, possibly along with the character victory jingles. Every character in Brawl (minus Toon Link, Jigglypuff and Wolf) were planned to have their own victory jingles ala Meta Knight. Only Mewtwo and Roy are on this list, meaning that the characters that were cut beforehand (Dixie, Dr. Mario, Toon Zelda, Toon Sheik and Plusle&Minun) had already gotten the boot.
I'm 100% sure that Roy had already been cut by the time Sakurai's team was asked to add Sonic into the game.

You think but I have a bad felling sakurai is just naive and did not do his research

That or he really thinks he is funny trolling and isn't doing any harm. If that's whats happening, at this point he needs to stop.
A good troll (lowering expectations to get a surprise at the end), it's done in good humor and it's even a good marketing strategy. He is not an anonymous person from the internet, he is a developer, some people can think he is funny making the negative trolling, and that he has all the right to do so ("if you don't like it, you know what to do" they will say), but right now he is doing more harm than good.
People that think im taking it too seriously can post the Nofunallowed.jpeg now, I don't really give a shit, that's what I learned from Sakurai trolling. When the game is released, then I can say if he made the right decision or not, as for now I (and same for anyone that's not Sakurai), don't understand what he really thinks and any predictions I can make can't really be based in anything he does, becuase there really isn't a pattern (as much as some people say there is). I will wait and see then.

Wait, Sakurai saying Ridley is a stage boss is him negatively trolling? At this point, Ridley fans are doing it to themselves and I shan't have any empathy for any bitching if/when he isn't playable.

That too!

The game's just very attractive.

I headed over to the eShop and viewed the Smash Direct on it and the 3DS game was in a border, as they usually have it for trailers, and even from the maximum zoomed out view, the game is still easy to see.

So when the game is actually here, on the full screen without the video borders, i'm sure people will find it easy to play.

That video clip surely just put all my fears of a small screen aside.

I still can't see the 3DS game as anything more than a worse version of the Wii U game.

And the fact it's releasing earlier is a point against it because it means it's robbing me of jumping into the console version day 1 with friends and having it be all new.

Yeah, the games itself are attractive on both system which excited me personally. I just hope that Smash 3DS have good control since I'm still struggled with drifting/braking button on 3DS XL for Mario Kart 7. I'm getting used to it tho.

I will give it a try, so 3DS Eshop have smash direct ready to download?

That's how I feel to an extent. Although it will be nice to be able to explore the game/characters at a more leisurely pace with the 3DS version, and then be able to jump straight into the fray with that knowledge on the Wii U version.

I'm conflicted.

Well, exclusive stages and Smash Run mode still make it a must buy, but I really need a 3DSLL to play this game. I checked the FD gerudo valley daily pic, it looks terrible on OG 3DS. Characters are too small.

Not downloadable, stream.

At this point, the inevitable shit storm that will arrive when he's confirmed to be unplayable seems more exciting than him actually being in the game.

I'm not looking forward to see this situation happening. At least, our thread shouldn't be that bad comparing to GameFaqs and Smashboard. They are going to get impacted pretty hard.

Smash threads have enough drive-by posters that this was going to happen even if the diehard Ridley fans within the thread were sane.

Hmm, that's true. I don't mind to see Ridley being in the game since I would like to welcome more villains to the roster. If he didn't get in then that suck for people who have been supporting Ridley for long term.

Yeah. It's the stages of grief, and right now they're all in the denial phase. They're hoping against all odds that Sakurai showing ridley's shadow meant something more than Ridley being a boss character.

Showing his shadow was nothing more than the equivalent of him making players guess the trophy in the other segments. It was for the casual direct viewer to say 'oh, I think that's Ridley! cool!' and nothing more.

If it's all some mega troll, i'll be really surprised (and happy), but I'm expecting nothing more than what it actually is.

I'm pretty certain the whole deal about Assist Trophies tying into All-Star Mode was a mistranslation. You can hear the quote in original Japanese here. My interpretation of it was that Assist Trophies are a part of the "All-Star" aspect of Smash Bros. If he was talking about All-Star Mode, he would have said just that. He doesn't mention the mode by name at all in the untranslated version. (My quick rough translation is: "Because of the All-Star aspect of Smash Bros, we wanted to include as many as possible.")

Someone more qualified than I am can probably further clarify, though.

Sakurai specified that All-Star mode will be back.

That's true, and we know assist trophies have something to do with it.

I vaguely remember something about this. Where is the quote from? I couldn't find it in the daily pics.

All-Star mode is like a boss rush mode, right?

I guess we unlock trophies this way.

We also saw trophies during Smash Run.

What trophies during smash run? I remember the smash logo with what seemed like stacks of coins around them, but do you have any pics that show trophies? Not saying you're wrong, I just don't remember seeing them.

All-Star mode is like a boss rush mode, right?

Kind of, I guess. In Melee and Brawl you fought every fighter in the game with a stamina meter that carried over from match to match, with limited recovery items. Bosses were never involved before, and in Brawl assist trophies would just appear like normal items.

In Melee the matches were totally random, but in Brawl they were series themed (and super boring because they were typically the same).
