You know, it would be cool if the game was balanced so the Pokemon's types had a bit of an effect.
Greninja has an easy time against Charizard.
Charizard has an easy time against Lucario.
Lucario has an easy time against Jigglypuff.
Jigglypuff has an easy time against Greninja.
All the right typings are there. It's a completely unrealistic idea, but it could technically work if they decided that they wanted to.
Brawl already had a small amount of this, except it was only for Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard and didn't impact
any other character.
However, the bad thing about it was other characters could affect those Pokemon. Let me explain:
Ivysaur is weak to fire, right? Well, in Brawl, they made it so Ivysaur took more knockback from fire attacks. There's a plentiful amount of fire moves in the game so this hurt Ivy
hugely. In contrast, Charizard is weak to water, right? Well, in Brawl, they made it so Charizard took more knockback from water attacks. Guess how many water attacks are in Brawl? At least 3 (Squirtle's Up B, Neutral B, and Mario's FLUDD). And then with Squirtle, he's weak to grass, right? Well, in Brawl, they made it so Squirtle took more knockback from grass attacks. Guess who is the only character with grass attacks? Ivysaur.
Meanwhile, Squirtle will resist fire attacks and take
less knockback from fire based attacks (which, again, there are plentiful). While Charizard resists grass attacks and takes less knockback from grass based attacks (which again, only Ivysaur has). And Ivysaur only resists water based attacks, which means he takes less knockback from water moves (which again, there's only at least 3). And no, they didn't do dual-resistances so fire based attacks
were not weaker against Charizard, same thing for grass attacks on Ivysaur and water attacks on Squirtle.
And that system was put in place
on top of the already awful forced switching and stamina systems.
Basically, it was horribly implemented and imbalanced between these three Pokemon. It almost feels shoehorned in at the expense of any actual balance that a fighting game requires. If Sakurai took that system to a level where it affected
all the Pokemon, it would be horribly imbalanced -- where some would have huge benefits while others would be completely bad based entirely on how common or uncommon certain elemental attacks are in the game.
Sakurai would have to make every character in the game have some kind of element to their attacks that would have an even positive and negative for each Pokemon and that ain't happening. This isn't Pokemon, it's a fighting game and while fanservice is great it's not at the expense of good balance. If fanservice can be added that makes characters
better (i.e DK's rolling dash attack) then go for it. But if the negatives outweigh the positives it brings, they shouldn't do it.
It's just a terrible idea lol.
