Donald Sterling (slum lord and LA Clippers Owner).. yeah, still a racist scum bag

OMG....just heard more of the audio on CNN.

He said "who do you think feeds them, clothes them...?" What does he think he is? A fucking slave master? @_@

The specific advertisers aren't going to come leaping back in, even if this situation is played out perfectly.

No different than Kobe or Tiger Woods.
While I agree to an extent, this is a very different situation. Kobe and Tiger will always be who they are. If the Clippers change owners and the new owners have nothing to do with Sterling, there is no longer any negative stigma with the team. In fact, it could potentially have a lot of positive energy with a fresh start. The longer this drags on, though, the more this racism stigma will carry with the team and potentially hinder future sponsorship.

It's not even logical. In his warped mind he probably thinks basketball wouldn't exist without him.

He's in a market that's guaranteed to make him money. It's the players who are feeding him, not the other way round.

It's more about the players too. State Farm is closer to Chris Paul than the Clippers.

Again, it's greatly a non issue, but I just wouldn't say that advertising will be back day one. Kind of lousy for new owners who don't have an arena.

I agree although I guess the main difference between this situation and his prior issues is that those were always "alleged" and handled in court, whereas this is a clear recording being blasted all over the TV/radio/internet for all to hear. It's easy to forget about stuff that is not so blatant as what we have here.

At least I believe that's the case, I don't think he's been caught out like this before correct?

There is some pretty damning stuff in the paperwork from those trials. Believe me it's been no secret that Donald Sterling was not only a racist, but also a horrible human being. People and players and (especially) the media should have been boycotting his ass a long time ago and I continue to believe that people in positions of influence like Chris Paul and Doc Rivers and all these sponsors should have done a little bit of research before jumping in bed with the devil. Excuse me if turning your practice shirts inside out couldn't be any more of an empty gesture. Bomani Jones hit the fucking nail on the head.

That was more than truth bombs, that was a hypernova of truth, which is why people are going to ignore it.

Laying down the truth.

Are you serious? He would have been okay if she bought a White or Hispanic man to the games. He has a very serious issue with black people, Donald Sterling specifically mentioned that he doesn't want to change his thinking about race.

While I agree wholeheartedly. Everyone in this nation with the attention span we have in this day and age isn't going to be as well versed in race related issues and know what type of person somebody really is. You can fault Chris and doc for not digging deep. But now that it's out in the open we should celebrate the fact that his racist pov is out in the open and more media attention will be given to his past transgressions.

Looking down and belittling people who are late to the train does more harm than good. Just be happy more people are aware. Regardless of how they got there. That's how I look at it. Income equality has been an issue long before occupy Wall Street. But the more attention it gets the better.

Truth being that a lot of people don't give two shits about the real issues until something like this happens. And isn't that what the guy in the video said (he didn't want his gf to associate herself with black people in the public eye)?

But it was always out in the open, it was just never sensationalized and recorded. Testimony from his various trials include allegations that he said black and mexican tenants are dirty and smell, telling agents of players that whatever contact he offers should be good enough for a "poor black kid". Saying he wanted to have an old southern coach be in charge of a bunch of black players. These things weren't hidden. There were plenty of red flags that people in positions of power within the NBA should have looked into and didn't. Do Chris Paul and Doc Rivers not have google? Doc Rivers is flatout lying when he says he didn't know that Sterling was like this. There is no doubt in my mind. But nobody cared and the NBA didn't so much as inquire or investigate. David Stern has a lot to answer for to be honest.

I seriously doubt that Chris Paul and Doc Rivers didn't dig deep enough. They both seem like smart guys that wouldn't let something like Sterlings history slip past them. In Docs case I definitely remember lots of articles wondering what it was going to be like working for a racist owner or if Sterling would even be willing to make an African American coach one of the highest paid coaches in the league.

Yeah, and it blew up in the NBA and everyone faces. Now they have to deal with it. That's a good thing. Sterling certainly has a history of racism that hasn't been addressed yet, and its been long over due to get his sorry ass away from the Clippers. Just because the NBA ignored the issue and took too long to finally take the team away from Sterling doesn't mean that they shouldn't do it.

My point exactly. Regardless how we got here. Let's deal with it now that it's out in the open and getting headlines rather than spend all this negative energy nitpicking why nobody did anything before. What exactly is that doing to contribute??

Sorry I just rather focus my energy elsewhere. Worry about attacking people late to the train AFTER we get to the destination. Not whole they're just trying to hop on. No matter the motivation just work towards the goal of getting another racist asshole out of power and do our best to stop it from getting this far and needing a tmz scandal to catch the next one.

I think it's just as important to deal with how many times the ball was dropped on the way here and who dropped it, as that is a way to help ensure that something like this doesn't happen again and go on for 20-30 years before a TMZ scandal blows everything open.

I don't see any real change coming from this, unfortunately.

When you have so many people giving their tacit approval because their pockets are more important than their integrity, it's difficult for that to flip

Q: Is it possible for Silver and the NBA to terminate Sterling's franchise ownership?

A: Yes. Under the terms of Paragraph 13 of the constitution, the owners can terminate another owner's franchise with a vote of three-fourths of the NBA Board of Governors, which is composed of all 30 owners. The power to terminate is limited to things like gambling and fraud in the application for ownership, but it also includes a provision for termination when an owner "fails to fulfill" a "contractual obligation" in "such a way as to affect the [NBA] or its members adversely." Silver and the owners could assert that Sterling's statements violated the constitution's requirements to conduct business on a "reasonable" and "ethical" level.

Any owner or Silver can initiate the termination procedure with a written charge describing the violation. Sterling would have five days to respond to the charge with a written answer. The commissioner would then schedule a special meeting of the NBA Board of Governors within 10 days. Both sides would have a chance to present their evidence, and then the board would vote. If three-fourths of the board members vote to terminate, then Sterling would face termination of his ownership. It would require a vote of two-thirds of the board to reduce the termination to a fine. Terminating a franchise would obviously be a drastic remedy, but the potential of the termination procedure gives Silver and the other owners vast leverage in any discussion with Sterling about an involuntary sale of his team.

So the person who made the best comment? Kareem

So, if we’re all going to be outraged, let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars.

The big question is “What should be done next?” I hope Sterling loses his franchise. I hope whoever made this illegal tape is sent to prison. I hope the Clippers continue to be unconditionally supported by their fans. I hope the Clippers realize that the ramblings of an 80-year-old man jealous of his young girlfriend don’t define who they are as individual players or as a team. They aren’t playing for Sterling—they’re playing for themselves, for the fans, for showing the world that neither basketball, nor our American ideals, are defined by a few pathetic men or women.

Edit: nm, Bomani Jones wow just wow.

Hopefully Silver announces tomorrow that they are starting this process. The sale of the team could be crazy though. It'll be like when McCourt had to sell the Dodgers. I can easily see the Clippers going for near a billion dollars.

If Sterling ends up selling the Clippers I imagine the whole thing will be much uglier than what happened with the Dodgers. If I remember correctly McCourt had to go through with that sale because he had no money and literally couldn't afford to keep the team but as far as I know Sterling doesn't have any big money issues.

Bomani Jones spends his life cutting through the bullshit. He's the smartest guy in sports and Le Batard is right with him. I haven't had a chance to watch the video but I'm assuming he's reiterating points from the Le Batard radio show where he eviscerated everything.

Lebatard is an idiot who got famous because LeBron decided to go to Miami or no one would have known about random guy from the Miami Herald. .... Jones I do like.
