Smash bros tournament. "Awesome!"
Smash playable at best buy. "Sweet!"
Nintendo treehouse coverage with live demos. "Nice!"
No conference with a live audience. "SERIOUSLY!? WTF NINTENDO!?"
Geez this was one of the main problems last year. People genuinely thought Nintendo wasn't even at E3 due to the fact that they didn't have a live conference with a live audience. Didn't they learn anything from last year?
One of the best and most effective parts of E3 last year and perhaps one of the most pivotal moments in the "console war" was when Sony announced that PS4 would have no DRM and that the price would be $399 and the audience flipped the fuck out and began chanting "Sony! Sony! Sony!" That moment wouldn't have been nearly as effective if it wasn't done in front of a live audience. Sure we would've probably still been freaking out but it would've lacked the impact the original announcement had.
Case in point, if Zelda U is to be announced at E3, it DESERVES to be announced in front of a live audience in what one would hope could be a repeat of one of E3's greatest moments ever, the Twilight Princess reveal at E3 2004. Should the trailer be amazing, it should be accompanied by Miyamoto swinging a sword and shield on stage, not Iwata in front of a sterile white background saying very slowly "Did you like it?"
I like Nintendo Directs, but at E3, whether your announcements rank from good to bad or boring to amazing, they should be made boldly and confidently before an eager crowd hungry for what you have to offer not standing in one spot in a blank background while you slowly make announcements, speaking as if you're incredibly bored.
