Play Nintendo - Announcing Nintendo @ E3 2014

Smash bros tournament. "Awesome!"
Smash playable at best buy. "Sweet!"
Nintendo treehouse coverage with live demos. "Nice!"
No conference with a live audience. "SERIOUSLY!? WTF NINTENDO!?"

Geez this was one of the main problems last year. People genuinely thought Nintendo wasn't even at E3 due to the fact that they didn't have a live conference with a live audience. Didn't they learn anything from last year?

One of the best and most effective parts of E3 last year and perhaps one of the most pivotal moments in the "console war" was when Sony announced that PS4 would have no DRM and that the price would be $399 and the audience flipped the fuck out and began chanting "Sony! Sony! Sony!" That moment wouldn't have been nearly as effective if it wasn't done in front of a live audience. Sure we would've probably still been freaking out but it would've lacked the impact the original announcement had.

Case in point, if Zelda U is to be announced at E3, it DESERVES to be announced in front of a live audience in what one would hope could be a repeat of one of E3's greatest moments ever, the Twilight Princess reveal at E3 2004. Should the trailer be amazing, it should be accompanied by Miyamoto swinging a sword and shield on stage, not Iwata in front of a sterile white background saying very slowly "Did you like it?"

I like Nintendo Directs, but at E3, whether your announcements rank from good to bad or boring to amazing, they should be made boldly and confidently before an eager crowd hungry for what you have to offer not standing in one spot in a blank background while you slowly make announcements, speaking as if you're incredibly bored.

The fact is Nintendo is late on HD development.
Mario 3dw is a pretty good game but not enough impressive. It came from 3DS game.
DKTF is marvelous but it remains a 2.5D game.
Pikmin 3 was a gamecube game or wii game before. And we can feel it.
Zelda ww hd is just a simple remake of a game which was released in 2003.
Don't be so fanatics. Remove your blinkers please.
What is the U game which can be a real competitor for ps4 system and xbox systems games?
U needs a Zelda like the E3 graphic demo Zelda. No?

X. No, I'm serious. It looks beautiful and will have incredible scope no doubt. Just look at what Monolith Soft did with Xenoblade on the Wii. Huge open seamless world with an incredible environment.

If we're talking about sales, then no obvious not. But X will be a game that competes with what games on the Ps4 and Xbox One will be doing.

As someone who is finally sold on getting a Wii U, I love seeing them come out with some life, showing that they are not going to just curl up and roll over with a system that is just now starting to hit it's stride. There are so many selling points for the Wii U that they can capitalize on, in addition to dropping some megatons.

On a side note, big props to Reggie for participating in this. You just have to like the guy.

TP was a SD game with big scales and Nintendo has never made this kind of title on HD hardware.3D world which is very similar with 3D Land has some framerate problems. I don't know how Nintendo will deal with big AAA games in HD. The first one will be MK8 and it seems to be very beautiful but a big Zelda asks more technical skills.

Phew. For a second I thought you seriously thought these things. Glad to know you're just kidding. And even more, doubting the technical skills of EAD of all developers is hilarious

The tournament should be cool, i think the lack of conference is huge again, no live audience, no partners coming out for exclusives.
Just a dull stream, with a few big announcements

As someone who is going to be at home streaming E3, I couldn't care less if there is a live audience or not. Just don't fuck up the stream like you did last year Nintendo. Screw uStream and go with YouTube, it's way more stable in my experience.

So, it seems the press is still upset about this all. And while I mostly agree with them for being upset, you can at least acknowledge WHY nintendo is doing it this way.

While I prefer the press actually getting to interview/talk to the devs, because they'll ask questions the devs never thought of answering, I at least understand why nintendo wants to present everything directly to the fans. It means they can't be asked embarrassing questions they have to skirt around. It means they can only present and reveal information they're ready to reveal. It means they can do everything much more efficiently and under their own terms.

Is this what is best for the customers? Maybe, but maybe not. Having 2-way communication gives us better answers, better explanations, so I will miss that. Getting all the info up front, directly from nintendo, and not have to wait for the press to write up an article about it, though, is really nice.

They use Youtube and Twitch now.

Though I'm excited to see what Nintendo has planned for us, I'd still much rather see a press conference. Audience reactions, good or bad are part of the spectacle. I feel cautiously optimistic and disappointed at the same time.

People that are saying they don't care about not having a live audience are missing the point.

Nintendo is trying to expand their business and get people to buy the Wii U. By hiding themselves in a corner and only showing their new products to people that are already Nintendo fans isn't helping their business. Having a E3 presser gets them mainstream coverage and new eyes on their products.

It makes me think Nintendo is slowly trying to let the Wii U die and will return to E3 in a year or two when they are ready to unveil a new system and a new philosophy.

What corner are they hiding in that only allows for Nintendo fans to see what they're doing? Their online presentations are available for everyone to watch, on websites that don't require Nintendo hardware to view.

If you think about it, they can easily be swallowed up by the other two by resorting to doing the same thing. Being off to the side can be an incredibly effective strategy if executed properly. And if this video is any indication, I think they realize that they need to start some fires and make some noise with a stage all to themselves in order to get attention. Not to mention that everyone loves an underdog that comes out and makes a strong case without following the status quo.

They already had 2 stage shows focused around the Wii U in 2011 and 2012, they were terrible at selling the Wii U.

Are gaming websites going to ignore reporting on Nintendo's actual announcements just because it's revealed through another viewing platform?

The only thing they miss out on is exclusive coverage in favor for laying their cards on the table for an entire viewing audience. Having a press conference also didn't help mediocre showings that Nintendo have had in the past.

Cool announcements but I'd rather they just do the normal conference along with everything else. They had a big presence at the last E3 but people still insinuate that they skipped out. That and I don't want to have to deal with their streaming server.

I'm excited. Whether it's a press conference or another Direct, I don't care. Just show me the games dammit. It's still real to me.

I was hoping for a press conference for E3, so a bit bummed out by that. But the Smash Bros at Best Buy encourages me, loved the Best Buy demos last year and I hope they use the same Best Buys this year, can't wait to get my hands on Smash Bros

Let's be honest; when was the last good Nintendo E3 conference? I'm okay with this.

2010 was one of the best gaming press conferences period even with the shaky start of Skyward Sword.

I don't think we're ever going to get something like that again. It was so fucking exciting, although the after conference announcements contributed to that.

U needs a Zelda like the E3 graphic demo Zelda. No?

3DW was plenty impressive and in my opinion better than Galaxy. Sure Galaxy had the spectacle but 3DW had better designed levels. And what about DK? Are 2D games somehow lesser? DK TF is better than any game out on the PS4 or Xbox One now and is perfect.

And Pikmin 3? Yes it was a Wii game, but aside from some muddy ground textures the game looks and plays phenomenally. The water in that game is incredible. And we're all expecting to be blown away by Zelda U. Plus, as others have said, X invalidates a lot of your concerns about large, HD open worlds

All of the major gaming sites will cover whatever Nintendo has to show. Them not doing a stage presser doesn't exclude them from that.

I do not think that 100-200 people in a room will affect any announcement.

Do you really think things would be any different if Sony revealed that in a video an dnot e3?

Awesome video. I personally think this is the best way for us to get information at E3, we get a video conference, same as always just bit with a love audience and live blunders, we get journalist impressions same as always and we get more information and interviews same as the source. To me, this is an improvement.

Well, that was an awesome video. I'm glad they are doing the direct model again, the press conference thing is overblown and doesn't do anything for gamers who don't get a chance to go (read: everyone).

I think the press was partly mad because the actual press event, the hands-on demo, was pretty uncomfortable. Because they didn't set up a stage but still had people speaking, everyone had to crowd around Reggie while he yelled slogans at them. A lot of people just laughed.

Now Keighley, Keighley totally had his feelings hurt by something. He got surprisingly mad about Wii Fit Trainer and called it the biggest faux-pas in E3 history. I think he wanted Nintendo's show simulcast to Spike and GTTV and Nintendo didn't agree (to their detriment). I can't imagine he will be happy about Nintendo streaming developer diaries themselves all day.
I don't know what his deal was.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but last year during E3 Keighly invited the Mega64 crew and talked with them about the announcements. The Mega64 guys were really excited for Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mario 3D World, X and Smash Bros. Keighly repeatedly tried to change the subject (Hey guys how about Xbox One? PS4?) but the Mega64 guys just ignored him and couldn't stop talking about Nintendo games. It was a really, really sad thing to see.

Secret reveal: It's jumping straight to Urban Champion 3.

It won't be Urban Champion 2 because it'll be Urban Champion U, a complete reboot of the series' continuity.

On a serious note, 42 days is less time than between when the last big batch of Mario Kart 8 previews hit and when the game launches. It's really not that far away.

So a no show at E3 again? #fail.

Phew. For a second I thought you seriously thought these things. Glad to know you're just kidding. And even more, doubting the technical skills of EAD of all developers is hilarious
On M3DW's stages there are some frame rates problems. Did you ever play this game? Even in Zelda ww HD there are these kind of problem. DKTF has some problems like that during his loadings.

Good video, need a live conference to hype the media though.

This is why they need to offer downloadable demos. Can you imagine how hyped everyone would be watching Nintendo Direct streamed live, and Iwata says "turn on your Wii U. The files your system downloaded overnight have just been unlocked. Please try the new _________" and then Iwata directly explains the demo to you.

That is the future. The press telling you about the game will be irrelevant. And screw Best Buy.

Good video, need a live conference to hype the media though.

Which is ridiculous. If the reveals are big enough, then the coverage and hype should follow suit. Just because they are not up there going through the same motions as the other two does not mean that seeing a new Zelda and everything else they plan to show should be diminished and downplayed. If that happens, then it's the media's fault for ignoring it.
