US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

That was because of the loading issues on disc for Chrono Trigger. Does that still apply to the PSN version?

Doesn't the DS version have a cropped vertical space due to the decreased native resolution of the DS compared to what the SNES could output?

Still menu and battle lag, yes. I wouldn't say it's as bad, but the PS1 ports basically had load timers hard coded into the game.

Much like FFT for the PSP. Even with the CPU overclock or playing on Vita it still lags for really big spells/summons because the game was coded with set buffer times that limit it.

At least that's my understanding.

Yep, unless they went in and manually changed the code around, the load times are always going to be there.

Yeah, I'm wondering if maybe the loading option helps, because that video makes it look terrible.

Nope, does nothing.

Again, if you have never played Chrono Trigger before, getting in for 3.50 is a hell of a lot cheaper than the price of the DS version these days (25 dollars or more on Amazon/Ebay), and it's otherwise a great version of the game.

Am I the only one that likes Cross better than Trigger? I feel like people are afraid to admit they like Cross better than Trigger on this board. *runs and hides*.

DS version still goes for $40 bucks. not getting it at that price.
The only reason I still haven't gotten it. I need some hard convincing still I feel like to get it at $35 more. I know it's the best version. Just wish the ps1 version was better. That video was bad lol.

The cropped vertical resolution is somewhat mitigated with the fact that you can display much of the UI on the second screen. As a hardcore fan of the SNES original, the DS version is great.

Chrono cross and vagrant story are two psx RPGs that I've tried starting at least 2-3 times and I just can't get into them. I'm getting cross just to see if I can finally understand what the hell is happening during the battles.

I too like Chrono Cross more. Hadn't played Trigger before so I wasn't expecting "Chrono Trigger 2", maybe that helped. I played CT after CC and liked it but not as much as Chrono Cross.

I played CC before CT also. Not sure if that leads to me liking it more can CT. I just love CC, especially that music. Although I admit, Serge might be the least intimidating protagonist in any RPG I've played.

Nah! I've been quite vocal about me liking Cross better than Trigger; and FFVIII better than VII and IX. My two favorite RPGs ever too.

That doesn't mean that the others suck, just that everything about each of those 2 games was better ...to my tastes. From visuals, to sound, to gameplay, character design, ....everything.

Does it apply to Chrono Cross as well?

Chrono Cross is a great game, but I could never agree it's better than Trigger. It's brilliant though, really good. The OST is godly, probably my favorite ever, and the opening is also unmatched.

It plays identically to the PS1 version. There are occasional slow downs on big spells, but it doesn't hamper gameplay much. The loading takes are also "hard coded" so you have to sit through the same ol' PS1-era swirly battle thing.

I like the way you think. I like FFVIII better than IX but like VII better than both.

Nope fucking love Cross and was generally surprised when i saw a good chunk the internet shitting on it.

I guess its because i wasn't under the expectation it of being "Chrono Trigger 2"

I knew from day 1 there would be a lot of hate for CC even then... I personally loved the music, and the story telling was absolutely top notch.

The music in this game was always the best feature though, no doubt. This isn't the best rendition of Time's Scar though... I think I even prefer the original to this honestly.

Yikes!

Oh well, doesn't matter, going to get both, I remember playing Chrono Trigger ages ago, didn't understand japanese but digged in and completed it. Will be good to have for nostalgia's sake (dat music!) and at least now I'll get the story.

the music is pretty great and i loved the look of the game at the time and the battle system due to more "action"-y it was.

one of the few game intros i would allow to run before starting the game

I'm considering picking up Ayesha, but as much as I enjoyed Mana Khemia for its character interaction, I've never touched an official Atelier game. How different is it from Mana Khemia? I know that crafting is king above all else, and I find arbitary time limits to be a turnoff, but another friend told me it's the most lenient of recent Atelier titles.

Looking for more impressions, especially about the battle system.

I asked this in this thread and got no reply.
How is the Metal Gear series on Vita? Are the controls fine and enjoyable to play?
Someone answered you or they answered someone else. Use the search button. They use the D-pad for contextual stuff and blah blah blah.

I checked all the posts after mine in this thread and there is no answer. Perhaps it was to someone else earlier in the thread.

I'm playing Chrono Trigger on Vita right now, and I'm pretty sure setting disc speed to fast shaved off a couple seconds for the "loads". They're about 3 seconds or so, when before they were more like 5-6 seconds. It's also my first time through the game, so it probably bothers me less than it would some people. Still, completely playable.

If I'm not really interested in multiplayer, is World Invitational still the HSG game to get?

I don't know what the consensus is, but I've got Out of Bounds on PS3 and World Invitational on Vita, and while they are both good I'd say if you are playing on PS3 then Out of Bounds is the better of the two titles. Better courses, IMO. That said, I plan on picking up the PS3 version of World Invitational on PS3 since it's only $5.

if nothing happens on Wed, think it's safe to go all in? :p

Well last time we had this promotion it got leaked through the Vita store over the weekend and we Sony didn't announce it until Monday. So I don't think it's really safe :\ Pretty sure it was right after Project Diva f had come out too and I had gotten that day 1 so it didn't count towards the promotion ;_;

I see ToS Chronicles at $20, though the PS+ price isn't up yet, so seems like the other games should be discounted soon.

Good stuff. Will try as soon as I get the game.

Gonna be disappointed if I can't get ToSC before I leave for class, considering it's 9.2GB, meaning it's gonna take quite some time to download & it'd be nice to use those 3 hours to download.

Wait, can I leave my PS3 on & then once I buy it on the PS Store via browser, it'd start automatically? Or is that only via 360?

I second this. Out of Bounds is the better game.
But really, for $5, you can't go wrong with WI.

The game has a lot of single player content (dlc too). Be warned, it's like most Hot Shots games. Once you hit gold and platinum levels, you better bring your A game,
or take the easy way out and drop the difficulty to easy. But even then it's still pretty challenging.
