Donald Sterling (LA Clippers owner) banned for life from the NBA

My guess is it will be pretty hard to force someone out when they OWN a team.
This has been mentioned several times in the thread but the Clippers are a franchise under the NBA. Sterling owns the rights to the team but the NBA owners as a group control the league.

It's like a billion dollar condominium and guess what, you can be forced out of a condo that you own under the right circumstances.

It's such bad timing though. Nobody in the NBA would wish this during the playoffs. Off-season, perhaps.

Oh I don't think Rush is right at all just saying if it was a conspiracy all they had to do was set up the call record it and give it to the media.

What I meant by it being a set up was that it was the girlfriend's doing not a big conspiracy group. It's an interesting theory though.

Look Enron, you and Rush share some of the same theories.

Except Rush actually thinks sterling was not mad because black people, he's mad because magic is trying to get him. I don't think Sterling knew or realized that.

I think Donald Sterling was mad because he dislikes black people.

I still think it was a setup, though. Whereas Rush has some pity for Sterling, I have none. Nice try though.

Are we seriously comparing one slur word to multiple sentence of hateful comment that loud and clear?

Fucking WOW.

Sentences?? This man has been a well documented racist bigot for DECADES. The Kobe comparison couldn't be anymore ridiculous; some shit I would expect to see on Faux News.

Oh fuck yes, brutality! :D

Re: First Ammendment people

THE FIRST AMENDMENT does not mean freedom from repercussions from what you say! Christ.

Well I'll be damned, I expected a slap on the wrist. I'm pleasantly surprised :)

That being said, I haven't followed NBA politics, etc. in YEARS. From what I've read, Sterling has been showing his true colors since forever. It's good they finally got him; it's a shame it took so long since he was so obviously in the wrong for so long :/

I think it is better it happened this way. This way there's no confusion or debate over the truth. It's on tape, everyone knows it's him, and they were free to take this action without any of the larger controversy from the less nutjob sectors of America.

Otherwise we would have heard the "it's all hearsay" crowd have a field day.

I can guarantee you that the kind of people who use that argument thinks that it does.

Although I would also imagine that a large percentage of those same people were calling for Obama to resign his candidacy over his "lipstick on a pig" comment. Funny how that works...
I see many indicating this punishment was severe, but how so? The family will most likely keep the team and sponsors will now not fear coming back due to this punishment from the commissioner.

And I find it hard to believe any of the other owners will vote him out in fear of him turning on them.
His wife was basically his co-conspirator in his racist housing shenanigans so transferring the team to her will solve nothing for the NBA.

Also, it's already been confirmed that the commissioner has more than the votes he needs to oust Sterling.

This is a good day for the NBA and for L.A. The sooner this fucker is out of the L.A. limelight, the better it is for everyone.

New owners need approval so staying in the family is unlikely. The NBAs goal was to separate him from the league and they have done and are doing just that. Some owners have already publicly stated they stand behind the commissioner. How would Sterling "turn on them"?

The sponsors likely aren't coming back until he's gone. Otherwise, they risk the image of putting money into a well-known racist's pocket.

It is basically not possible to be more severe than this in any practical way. They can't take the team from him without payment, they can't really fine him anything more than the league constitution allows for, and they can't send him to jail, but he's shut out from the ownership process in every meaningful way.

The family will most likely keep the team

There's like no chance this happens.

Turning on them? What's he gonna do? There's blood in the water, they're not gonna think twice about tossing him overboard.

2.5 million is the man's afternoon lunch money, which will do absolutely nothing to him. He needs to pay dearly. Preferably with blood. But i guess we are more civilized than that. At least he's banned from the NBA.

So.... none of you have EVER said questionably racist/homophobic things in private?

Gosh this world is so full of angels.

I'm mixed race and I know for a fact that isn't true. I overhear racist/homophobic stuff all the time and I live in one of the most liberal countries in the world. I just think its silly to hang Sterling over comments he made in PRIVATE to his girlfriend (who happens to be half black btw)

Gosh this world is so full of angels.

lol

I wanna know why you think you can coach these niggers.

That's because of all the blacks in this building, they smell, they're not clean.

And it's because of all of the Mexicans that just sit around and smoke and drink all day.

I don't like Mexican men because they smoke, drink and just hang around the house.

Is she one of those black people that stink? [...] Just evict the bitch.

I'm offering a lot of money for a poor black kid.

I don't have to spend any more money on them, they will take whatever conditions I give them and still pay the rent.

look at those beautiful black bodies.

Not to mention how demeaning he is to his employees and the housing discrimination scandal.

Tons of us look like angels with the bar set so fucking low.

I wrote "some" which you do.

You've said racist/homophobic things? Please share some of these things with us.

These comments are like a bonus track on the album that is Sterling's bigotry

And guess what, not everyone is an asshole

Leave it to a Knicks player to look like he just woke up while everyone else looks like a presentable human.

...because buying video games on Steam isn't anywhere near running a business?

Unless you're equating buying games to buying players. That makes this a whole different issue then

Hey Dark Souls 2 was Gaf's top draft pick this year.

I despise him and his statements, but I'm not sure that's the right move. I mean, can they really force him to sell the club? I wouldn't be shocked if this ends in a big fat lawsuit.

Oh well, hard to feel sorry for him.

Yeah, I'm not sure what basis there is for that, at least per federal law. I dunno what arcane rules the NBA has that govern the franchises, but if it's something that might not pass muster with contract regs.

The Silver Lining of Justice just dropped a nuke on Donald Sterling.

- Fined $2.5M and will be donated to anti-discrimination groups
- Won't be able to attend any NBA association/governor's meeting
- Banned from any LA Clippers activities
- NBA will try to force Sterling to sell the team, Silver says he won't stop until he does

How can they do that if he owns the team?

The things he said ain't so private anymore.

Fuck Donald Sterling.

That fine is too little, but good job on the NBA for not backing down. Hopefully they do manage to force him to sell the team off and get him out.

I don't think that just because a man spends his whole life actively discriminating against all minorities and especially black people that we should immediately assume he is racist. People are so quick to judge. Same thing with Cliven Bundy. People just don't understand the complexity of his views.

10/10... would read again <3
