US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

God, I spent a lot today and last night.

Got my Child of Light pre-order last night and today I picked up:

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 + the 2 DLC suits that didn't come with the Gamestop pre-order pack.
The two Child of Light extra dresses + stardust items DLC (after playing for hours last night I figured these guys deserve more money).
Muramasa Rebirth
MGS HD (PS3)
ZOE HD
DMC HD.
Daylight.
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Rain

Already had all the other RPGs on sale besides the Ys game. Thinking about getting that one, but it's also a lot more than all the other on sale items and I'm hoping it's up for being a PS+ title.

Another thing on the plus side of saving money - my Amazing Spider-Man 2 game came with 2 free tickets to the movie that I was going to see anyways so there's $20 right there.

Well, Picked up:
-Muramasa Rebirth
-Ys
-Time and Eternity
-Armored Core: Verdict Day
-Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory
-Atelier Totori
and Valkyria Chronicles II as well, just because.

I spent way too much money confirmed.

I know this has been said 500 times before, but if you somehow aren't convinced.

Buy Persona 4 Golden. Vita's best game and one of the best games ever.

Play Time and Eternity first and tell us what you think of it!

Grabbed MGS Collection for the vita and going to pick up Tales soon. MGS is downloading so slooowww...slower than the android developer kit installing on my computer. Usually vita games download in like 30 minutes for me. Either way, I can't really play them right away with finals coming up...

Also thinking of getting Muramasa Rebirth but my 16gb memory card can't handle any more games. I had to delete ninja gaiden 2 for mgs.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does Chrono Trigger have the loading issues that Final Fantasy Chronicles had? If not, this will be an easy purchase.

Action RPG-ish thing with Fallout 3/NV's VATS system. It's kind of unique, but fundamentally it's a dungeon crawler with real time movement and a VATS-like targeting system if you played Fallout 3 or New Vegas. If you haven't, time will stop for an attack as you select what body part to target.

I think you sold me on the game. I thought it was turn based RPG.

It's the PSX ver. so expect loading times, but on the Vita they won't be much of an issue I guess.

I just bought Dragon Ball, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Ys Vita in the Japanese games sales. Feels good, man. My Vita just got a massive boost in the arm with these new games.

so just noticed that while it's not part of the golden week sale officially... Moon Diver is on sale for half off, which as far as I know (and I have looked every week that I can recall) it's never been on sale before (came out over 3 years ago)... Finally I can justify buying it lol.

Since I've never tried the Metal gear games, is the HD collection a good place to start? I'm mostly interested in the story so would it be better to grab part 1 and play that first? or is it not necessary to fully understand what's going on. PS3 versions.

Personally I would play MGS1 first. If you are trying to play it on the Vita(US) you can transfer it from a PS3. The PS3 collection comes with Peacewalker, and the Vita version does not though.

P4G is a good deal even at MSRP, but anything $20 or under it's practically a steal. I've got just under 90 hours logged in it and still haven't hit the ending (though I'm close). I have no regrets buying a Vita to play this game.

I caved... bought Chrono Cross again (can finally put my PS1 discs to rest I guess), bought P4G despite not having a Vita yet (soon... very very soon!), and soul calibur 5 while I was at it because the wife loves SC games and it was only $5.

Was also VERY tempted by MGS collection for Vita... already have it on PS3 but it looks like the regular price isn't that much if I decide to double dip later, and with so many new (and "new") games I'll have to play on my Vita... hard to justify getting it as well.

Somebody mentioned Xenogears - is that on sale too? Like Chrono Cross, that never got released in the UK either, and I've always wanted to play it. Hmmm.

Gaf, how is Muramasa on the vita? I have it on the Wii but would like to get the Vita version for the extra DLC and to see it on the OLED. Do the graphics hold up? Are the controls good?

I'm going to pick up Verdict Day, is the co-op any good in it?

I also bought chrono cross under the justification that at least I can play it on the ps3 now if I want since the original disk has issues and freezes in certain areas randomly :/

Well there are sort of two main eras in the MGS series and the HD collection doesnt really have any cohesion to it, and leaves large gaps. MGS3 and MGS:PW belong to the earlier era, while MGS2 is in the later era.

If you're mainly concerned with story, playing MGS2 without MGS1 wont make any sense.

However, since MGS3 is the earliest entry in the story, you could start there without issues and then move on to Peace Walker. But then you might have some trouble going back and playing the more primitive MGS1 later on.

Most would suggest starting at MGS1 and playing in release order, though.

Release:
MGS1>MGS2>MGS3>MGS4>MGS:PW>MGS5(2015)

Story Chronologically:
MGS3>MGS:PW>MGS5(2015)>MGS1>MGS2>MGS4

It's one of the most gorgeous things on the system. The graphics hold up ridiculously well, and the fact you can use X to jump, D-Pad for movement, and analog for items makes it a lot more playable. The DLC stories are also quite nice, with new areas, bosses, music, and the characters play completely differently from Momohime and Kisuke. The Nekomata DLC has probably the hardest boss in the entire game. Totally worth it.

You know Fallout 1 and 2 had targeting via different body parts :\
I did actually, but I picked 3/NV because it shares the dynamic of real time mixed with something akin to turn based with the stamina meters and pausing for individual body part targeting. In contrast Fallout 1 and 2 end up being better to compare with Front Mission or something, full grid based, tactical combat that lets you target specific body parts.
I think you sold me on the game. I thought it was turn based RPG.
Just keep in mind it's not quite a proper action RPG like Diablo, Dark Souls, or Zelda's combat system, as you effectively always use this VATS-like targeting system rather than it being optional like Fallout 3/NV. Though there's a timing based mechanic to chaining together attacks, so in a way it's like it actually goes further in being a real time combat system. It's a one of a kind game really.

There's also somewhat annoying pauses when enemies use their own attacks/abilities, but ah well.

What a mess, I'm confused already ;)
I never played it on the PS3. I'm assuming it runs fine though.
I guess I'll grab the 1st one. Thx for the help guys.

Nice, done deal then. I'll pick it up. Thanks!

I picked up Atelier Totori, and Metal Gear Solid collection for vita. Would have bought a lot more but I'm poor. I think I'm going to need a larger memory card soon.

Also, since it wasn't mentioned, Metal Gear Rising is the only game set after MGS4 (and yes, it is canonical). A character action game rather than traditional Metal Gear, but a very good one.

And to make everything all the more confusing, the release order technically starts at Metal Gear, followed by Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for MSX, both of which are included in MGS3 Subsistence (which in turn is the version in the HD collection).

On the topic of the sale, very tempted to pick up Totori and Meruru, but also want Ys...

Buy Armored Core, people.

Planning on it, but not sure if I'll get around to playing it online anytime soon. Is the single player worth a purchase? Read bad things about V, but good things about VD except for a couple of co-op only superbosses.

Edit: Never mind! Someone bumped the semi-OT of Verdict Day with your impressions!

If I have ACV, do I still need Verdict Day? Not a big deal at $5, just curious if it has different content, or if its just an online focused expansion.

It's like 4: Answer, IIRC. More an expansion/rebalance than anything.

I'd buy it, but I'd rather From port Armored Core 5 to PC like they're doing Dark Souls now.

Nah just play the MGS games as per their release years.
So MGS 1>2>3>4>Peace Walker, don't let the story bother you much as you can treat each game's story as being it's own seperate thing with nods towards previous games.

Ok, thanks gonna buy chrono trigger then. :P
Keep in mind the fast disc thing is generally at best a marginal improvement, at worst either causes bugs or makes loading slower; this is one of the reasons I wanted Blood Omen on PSN as I had hoped it'd make the game's infamously long loads more tolerable... instead they got longer when the feature was enabled what the hell.

My cart is getting ridiculous, one last question!

I have Atelier Totori and Meruru for PS3 and haven't played either of them. I'd like to buy one of the Vita games just because it seems like a great portable game. Does anyone have an opinion on which is the better or more upgraded port? I'd still play them in order of course.

VD is way, way better than ACV. In terms of single player, all 60-ish missions are brand new and much more consistent in quality. Instead of overly long gauntlets where you kill MTs over and over, all of them provide some kind of unique and focused challenge and you're rarely fighting in the same environment or against the same enemy types. New parts like heat machine guns and plasma missles are great and make dealing with different AC types more viable in all situations. The story itself isn't terribly good but it has a lot of fantastic references and throwbacks to older ACs, For Answer especially.

It's good stuff.
