Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I have not played it for 4 months

I haven't played it since it first launched on Steam. I keep wanting to start it up again but then I decide to just hold off for a more complete package. I don't remember the timelines at all but I feel like Terraria might have felt more complete as a package much earlier on.

The fact that they are all going to work from the same place at the same time is very encouraging, though.

I asked this question quite some time ago, and I'll ask again to get an update: How is the performance? Also, can I keep my character now, or he/she will be erased again? Thanks in advance.

Performance is still terrible for me. I average ~10 fps when zoned onto a planet.

Sounds like they lifted Dark Souls' combat straight.

Hope it works as well as it sounds. :)

Nice, I'm glad they're considering removing touch damage from enemies. I always thought that that was a really stupid and annoying mechanic in games, unless the enemy is made of fire or spikes or something.

Personally I found the constant knockback to be annoying. Terraria had the same problem, you'd just keep spamming attacks to keep things away from you. I'd rather Starbound have enemies that don't just fly at you blindly but actually attack with something resembling strategy.

Looks like a stable update has been pushed to the game. Server has been updated, so if you can't seem to log on, you'll probably need to update your game.

Anybody still playing?

Not lately. I want to, but I'm waiting until the new progression system gets patched in to start playing again. I already have over 50 hours played with the game, but I decided to spend time with other games until it gets further along development.

I can be patient. Starbound will consume dozens of my hours once it is finished, of that I have no doubt. For now I'm addressing my backlog instead.

Did a stealth update kick in today?

When I came home earlier, the server was throwing up error messages left and right. I usually only see that if an update happened, but it doesn't look like anything updated?

I put about ten hours into this when it first launched on steam.

How is it now and is it worth jumping back into now that finals are almost over?

I came here to ask this. I played like 15 hours until the character wipe and then I never touched the game again.

Is it finally save to play this game yet?

So I just read that ship upgrades still aren't in.

How is that possible when modders did it in a week? What are they even doing?

The developers were super responsive and hard-working right after release.

What is going on now is supposed to be that since major rework is going on with combat, or the engine, or what-have-you, they are waiting until everything is ready for a major release. However, it has indeed been months.

I thought they also added a fair number of mod features into the game quite quickly, so I am not sure why they did not add the ship upgrades. Maybe they believe they have a superior solution?

They're also getting settled in, since they were scattered all over the world, they managed to have everyone move to the same place.

Also, there's updates, but only on the unstable release.

It seems that they have been quite busy moving their headquarters to London, something which slowed down the production considerably. And, well, who knows what is happening behind closed doors.

Speaking of ships:

New Starbound update: Progress on Ships!

Started playing again, hitboxes on the enemies seem improved. Also no more cheating by attacking through a barrier.

However, I can't believe there still no way to drop a beacon so you can beam down to your last position on a planet. There is nothing more annoying than running around the world [literally] for 45 minutes, stumble upon a huge base and realise your inventory is full and you need to beam up to the ship to offload some of that crap. I don't want to run all the way back.

Looks like nothing major happened in the last 2/3 months?
Anyway, Tiy just said that everyone finally moved in, so development will resume normally, I'm waiting phase 2 before playing again personally.

I haven't been building in a while, so I figured it was time to post what I've built so far and maybe draw some inspiration there;

Since the images are kinda large I'll just link to them;
Ruined Bridge / Tower
Treehouse

I think I'll wait for the next big update before I dig into any big building projects.

I remember you showing me that bridge/tower which looks awesome. Might as well show whats in the works since nothing is going on in this thread.

I don't plan to do much till the next big update, however I'll probably get back to work on my deep-core floran colony then.

Easy to find, just go down to the bottom of the hellevator in gafworld. Only two houses so far =/

Any estimation when there will be a release version of the game? I'd really like to play it, but I don't want a half-finished game. Because I know that I'll only play through this once and don't think I'd come back to it two years later for some content patches...

Nope, we have no estimations whatsoever. Chucklefish became notoriously known for giving bad release date estimations. The game right now is in "Beta", still in the first phase, and we don't know when they will proceed to the next one. The team just moved to London and is working on the game more diligently.

I haven't been on the server since January at least. I've thought about it, but much like playing the game in general, I don't know what I'd even do while there. I'm not much of a builder, and there's not much else to do besides mine and build things right now.

I'd say the game isn't even half finished yet. Any estimation anyone could give at this point would just be a wild guess. There's a good amount of art assets and potential, but the actual game part of it isn't close to done, unless you just want to build things in 2D.

I wonder if they regret releasing last year. Seems to have been a ton of loss in momentum and enthusiasm over the last several months. Just glancing at Steam stats, I wasn't expecting Terraria to have so many more peak players than Starbound. But then Terraria has interesting gameplay, whereas Starbound currently just has potential and better building mechanics. I'm still looking forward to what's coming, but it's been slow going.

I cant say im surprised at the numbers considering there have been next to no updates for almost 4 months now.

I doubt it. The game is still early in development and they know it, but giving early access gave them a cash infusion that has allowed them to reorganize and step things up, so I'm sure they are content with it. Once the heavy updates start coming and the game gets further along players will come back again. It's a great game, but I think most early adopters are waiting for it to get a bit further along before really diving in. I know I am, and still I managed to rack up close to 60 hours of game time with it.

I'm definitely in the camp that liked the game, especially if I have a friend to play it with, but I'm just waiting until the major combat and quest stuff gets updated to play it anymore.

The progression overhaul is what I'm waiting for. I think what they have planned sounds awesome and will improve the game exponentially.

I think once the quest system is fully implemented the game is going to be so much more fun to play overall, some people can find joy in building, others in doing quests for epic loot and shit. It definitely has a lot of potential and I already got my 15 dollars worth out of it (and then some)

So I just read that ship upgrades still aren't in.

Well, don't some mods often break and need fixing after an update is pushed? The devs have to implement it in a way that doesn't break with future updates, so it makes sense that they'd need more time to do so.
